20 Getting Started About po wer management The Reader has a pow er management f eature to a void unnecessar y batter y consumption. At purchase, po wer management is activ ated. P ower management operates as f ollo ws: After 60 minutes of inactivity , the Reader enters sleep mode automatically while the batter y power is consumed slightly .
21 Getting Started T o shut down the Reader manually Batter y consumption can be minimized b y shutting down the Reader . Y ou can shut do wn the Reader manually in one of the f ollo wing wa ys. Slide the PO WER s witch and hold it f or more than 3 seconds.
22 Getting Started Char ging the Reader About char ging Y ou need to charge the Reader when using it f or the first time, or when the remaining battery power is lo w . Charge in one of the f ollowing w a ys: Connect to an A C outlet using the supplied A C adapter (A C- S5220E).
23 Getting Started Connect to an A C outlet using the po wer cord. Charging star ts and the charge/b usy indicator lights up in red. Charge/Busy indicator Pow er cor d T o an AC outlet Hint When the batter y has been fully charged, the charge/busy indicator goes off .

32 Getting Started Using the Reader Home Menu The “Home” men u is the star ting point to read content, visit the Reader Store, to use v arious applications and to configure the settings. 33 Getting Started About the status bar The status bar shows y ou the current status of the Reader . Icon Status Shows the wireless status ( page 34 ). Appears when connected to a 3G wireless network, which is f aster than a 2G network. The Reader is automatically connected to a 3G network when av ailab le.
34 Getting Content Accessing the Reader Stor e With wireless network connection, you can purchase and download eBooks and periodicals directly from the Reader Store if within the network cov erage area. Accessing the Reader Store via wireless netw ork Bef ore accessing the Reader Store, confirm: The WIRELESS s witch is set to ON ( page 12 ).
35 Getting Content About “Wir eless Standby” Y ou can use “Wireless Standb y” to av oid unnecessar y batter y consumption caused by the wireless f eature . If y ou do not perf or m any wireless operations f or more than 10 minutes , the wireless f eature automatically enters standb y mode.

37 Getting Content Using the Reader Store The Reader Stor e r egistration In order to purchase and download eBooks or periodicals, y ou need to register an account at the Reader Store, or if y ou already ha v e a Reader Store account or Sony Style account, sign in via y our e-mail address and pass word.
38 Getting Content Br owsing the Reader Stor e Browse the Reader Store to find y our desired books and purchase them b y f ollowing the store instructions. 41 Getting Content Accessing the Reader Stor e via Reader Librar y Reader Librar y is the content management software y ou can use with the Reader . Once you ha v e it installed on y our computer , y ou can access the Reader Store from y our computer and transf er eBooks , per iodicals, audio files and pictures from y our computer to the Reader .
42 Getting Content Continued T o install using the AutoPlay featur e The installation launcher appears when y ou connect the Reader to y our computer (A utoPla y f eature is a vailab le on Windows XP , Windo ws Vista only). Make sure y our computer is connected to an A C outlet and turned on (not in sleep mode).
43 Getting Content Clic k “Install Reader Librar y” in the “Installer for Reader” window , then follo w the on-screen instructions. Notes While connecting via USB, y ou cannot operate the Reader . The wireless f eature is unav ailab le while the Reader is connected via USB.

53 Reading Books Note The inde x bar or scroll bar appears only if content or items cannot be displa yed in a single page . About the bar The bar appears on the right side of the list if all the items cannot be displa y ed in a single page. Use them to na vigate through the list pages.
54 Reading Books Index bar Drag the bar until the desired item appears , or tap the first letter of its title/author/ar tist/comment, b y which the list is sor ted, in the inde x bar . Index bar “#” contains books or authors that begin with a number .
55 Reading Books Switching the list display view – “View” Y ou can choose to displa y the list f or mat in either “Thumbnail” or “List” view . In the “Books” list, press the OPTIONS button, then tap “Thumbnail” or “View . ” The list will be displa y ed in the selected f or mat.

91 Reading Books Notes During the mar kup operation, the current page is sa ved b y pressing a button or closing a book. Y ou cannot tur n pages by dragging on the page if either , or are selected. Use the < > buttons . T o erase a line T ap , then tap or stroke a par t of the line.
92 Reading Books T o display an iconized markup in original for m If y ou do not view the marked page in the same te xt size and page la yout (“1 P age Vie w” or “2 P age Vie w”), the markup is display ed as at the first character of the marked page .
