8 Recor ding an MD right away! Connect to a dig ital sour c e u sing an optical cable ( supplied) to make digital recording s. Digital re cording is possible ev en from digita l equipment with different samp ling rates, such as a DA T deck or a BS tuner , using th e b uilt-in samp ling rate con ve rter .

12 Playing an MD right away! T o use the recorder on a rechargeable battery or dry ba ttery , see “Power sourc es” (pa ge 53). 1 Make connections. (Insert the cables fi rmly an d completel y int o the app r opr iate jac ks.
13 2 Insert an MD. 1 Press OP EN to open the lid. 2 Insert an MD with the label side fa cing front, and press the lid to close . 3 Play an MD. 1 Press N ( >N on the remote cont rol). A short beep sou nds in the headpho nes when you operat e on the remo te control.
14 T o stop pl ay , press x . A long beep so unds in the headphon es when you operate on the remote co ntro l. Playba ck starts fr om the point you last stop ped playin g. Afte r you press x , the recorder will automatic ally turn of f after: — ab out 5 minute s when using AC po wer ada ptor .

16 Various ways of recording T wo ways of connecting to a sound source The inpu t jack of this re corder works as both digital and analog in put jack s. Con nect t he recorde r to a CD p layer or a cass ette record er using ei ther digi tal (optic al) input or analog (line) in put.
17 Note Track marks m ay be copi ed incorrec tly: • when you record f rom some CD player s or mult i disc players using digi tal (optical) input. • when th e source is in s hu ffle or program pl ay mode while recording using digital (opti cal) input.
18 Recording with analog input ( line cable requir ed) The so und will sent from the connec ted equipme nt as analog s ignal bu t will be recorded dig itally on the di sc. 1 Insert a re cordable MD and s tart re cording. For recording operatio ns, see “ Recordi ng an MD ri ght away! ” (page 8 ).
19 T o s tart/stop recor ding in sync with the source pl ayer (Synchr o-recor ding) Y ou can easily mak e digital record ings of a d igital s ource on an MD. Before sync hro-record ing, make c onnections t o t he digital s ource with a di gital ca ble, and inse rt a reco rdable MD .
20 z • Y ou cannot pause manua lly during synchr o-recording. • When there is no sou nd from the player for mor e than 3 seconds durin g synchro- recording, the recor der goes into the standby mode a utomatically . When the sound c omes from the playe r again, the recorder re sumes synchro- recording.
21 Recording fr o m a microphone Connec t a stereo microp hone (ECM- 717, ECM-MS 907, ECM- MS957, etc.; not supplied ) to t he MIC (PLUG IN PO WER) jack . 1 Insert a reco rdable MD and s tart rec ording . Slide REC to the ri g ht. For othe r oper a ti ons, see “ Reco rding a n MD right aw ay! ” (page 8) .
22 Recording in monaural for double the normal recording time For lo nger recor dings, choos e to record in monaural . The record ing time becomes double the n ormal. 1 While press ing X , slide REC to t he right. The reco rder stan ds by for rec ording.
23 Adjusting the recor ding level m anually (Manual recor ding) When you record , the s ound le vel is adjust e d a utomatical ly . If necessary , you can se t the lev el manually . Note Adjust the recor ding level while the r ecorder is in st andby mode.

32 Emphasizing bass (DIGIT AL MEGA BASS) The Mega B ass functio n intensifies low frequ ency sound for riche r quali ty audio re production. It affects only the sou nd from th e headph ones. On the re cord er 1 Press ENT ER, pre ss > MENU . repe atedly unt il “ MEGA BA SS ” flas hes in th e di splay , and the n pr ess ENT ER ag ain.
33 Notes • If the sound becom es distorted when empha sizing bass, turn down the volu me . • The Mega Bass function does not affects the sou nd being recorded. 38 Connecting to a stereo system Conne ct the i 1 (or i 2) jack of the record er to the L INE IN jack s of an amp lifier or a tape pla yer with a line cable (R K-G129 or RK - G136, no t supplied ). The output is analog. The re corder plays the MD digi tally and se nds analog signals to the externall y connected equipm ent.
39 Notes • Even when conn ecting to the ex ternal ly conne cted equi pment , the Meg a Bass functio n is operative. If you do not want the effect o f the Mega Ba ss function on your re cording or the output fr om the exter nally connecte d equipment, set “ MEGA B ASS ” to “ BAS S 0 ” (page 32).
40 Editing recorded tracks Y o u can edit yo ur recording s b y add ing/erasing track marks or label ing tracks an d MDs. Prem astered M Ds cannot be edited. Notes on editing • Do not move or jog the recorder while “ TO C E dit ” * is flas hing in the disp lay .

42 T o erase the whole di sc Y o u can quickly e rase all the tra cks and data of the MD at the sam e time. Note t h a t once a recording h a s been er ased, you canno t retr iev e it.

44 Adding a track mark Y o u can add tra ck marks s o that the pa rt after the new trac k mark is coun ted as a new track. The track numb ers will incre ase as follo ws. 1 Whil e playing or pausi ng an MD , press T MAR K on the record er at the poin t you want to mark.
45 Erasing a track mark When yo u recor d with analo g (line) inpu t, unnece ssary track m arks may be recorded w here reco rding level is low . Y ou can eras e a track mark to combi ne the trac ks before a nd after the track ma rk. The t rack numb ers will ch ange as fo llows.
46 Moving recor ded tracks Y o u can chan ge the order of the recorde d tracks. Exampl e Mov e track C from th e third to the seco nd tra ck. On the re cord er 1 While pl aying the tr ack you want to move, pres s ENTER so that “ EDIT ” flash es in the disp lay , and then press ENTER again.

48 Labeling r ecordings Y ou can name disc s while the recorde r is sto pped, tr acks while th e record er is playin g, and both wh ile the recor der is recor ding. Each name c an be as long as 20 0 letters. Each dis c can hold up to 1 700 alphanu meric letters during playb ack or stop .

59 Note on digital recording This reco rder uses t he Seri al Copy Manage ment System, whic h allows only first- genera tion digital copie s to be made from pr emastered software. Y ou can only make cop ies f rom a hom e-reco rded MD by using the ana log connecti ons.

63 System limitations The r ecording sys tem in you r MiniDisc r ecorder is ra dically differen t from th ose used in c assette and DA T decks and is char acterized by the limit ations desc ribed belo w . Note, howe ver , that these li mitations are due t o the inh erent na ture of the MD recor ding system i tsel f and not t o mech anical causes.
64 The total recorded time and the remaining time on the di sc may not total the maximum record ing time (60, 74 , or 80 minutes). Normally , record ing is done in minimum units of appr oximatel y 2 seconds. When recording is stop ped, the last unit of recor d i n g al ways use s this unit of 2 seconds e ven if the actual record ing is shorte r .
