11 Getting star ted , C onnect th e power cord (ma ins lead) to th e AC Adaptor a nd then to a wa ll outlet (wall socke t). The /CHG lamp (ora nge) lights up whe n chargi ng begi ns, and goes of f when chargin g is comple ted. • After charging the battery pack, disconnect the A C Adaptor from the DC IN jack of your cam era .
12 Number of images and battery life that can be recorded/ viewed The tables sho w the approximate number of images and the bat tery life that c an be recorded/ viewed when you shoot images in no rmal mode with a fully charged battery pack at a tem perature of 25°C ( 77°F).
13 Getting star ted Using an ext ernal powe r source , O pen the jac k cover and conn ect the AC Adapto r (supplied) to the DC IN j a ck of your c amera. Open th e cover in the arro w dire ction as illustrat ed abov e. C onnect the plu g with the v mark facing left.
14 Turni ng on/off your camera , P ress POWER . The POWE R lamp (gre en) light s up an d the powe r is on. When yo u turn on your cam era for th e first time , the C lock S et scre en appear s (page 15) . Turning off the power Press POWE R again. The POWER la mp goes out, and th e camera tu rns off.

19 Shooti ng still images Image size and quali ty You ca n choose im age size ( number of pixe ls) and ima ge qua lity (com pressio n ratio) ba sed on t he kind o f images y ou wa nt to shoot.
20 Basic still image shoot ing (using a uto adjustme nt mode) Holding the cam era correctly When sh ooting pict ures w ith t he camera, be careful so t hat your finge rs do not block the lens portion , finder window , flash emitte r, or inf r ared ray emit ter.
21 Shooti ng still images , P ress and hol d the shutter button h alfway dow n. The be ep sounds but th e image is not yet recor ded. When the AE/AF l ock indic ator changes from flashing to steadily lit, the camera is ready for shooti ng. (The LCD scre en may be froz en for a split second de pending on the subject.
22 A (Apertur e pri ority) You can set the desired shoo ting functio ns using me nus (pages 39 an d 111). In addition , you ca n select the aperture va lue (pag e 45). M (Manu al) You can set the desired shoo ting functio ns using me nus (pages 39 and 111).
23 Shooting st ill images Using the zoom feature , Press the zo om lever up or down t o choose the desired imag e size for shoo ting. The m inimum focal d istance to the subject Approx. 50 cm (19 3/4 in ches) from the lens su rface • The zoom le ver directions noted above are the factory settings.
24 Shooting close-ups — Macro The m acro recor ding mode i s used wh en zooming up a small su bject, such as f lowers or insects. Yo u can shoot close -ups of subjects up to the distances specified below. When the zoom i s set all th e way to the W side: Approx .
25 Shooti ng still images Using the self-timer , S et the mode dial to , and press V ( ) on the control butt on. The (self- timer) in dicator ap pears on t he screen. • If the menu is currently displayed, press MENU first so that the menu disappears.
26 Selecting a flash mode , S et the mode dial to , and press v ( ) on the c ontrol button repeat edly t o se lect a flash mode. Each time you press v ( ), the indica tor changes as follows. No indic ator (Au t o): The flash automati cally strobe s when shoot ing images in a dark plac e.

29 Shooti ng still images Inserting the date and time on a still image , S et the mode dial to SET UP. The SE T UP scr een appear s. • When images are shot wit h the date and time superimposed, the date and ti me cannot be removed later .

33 View ing still ima ges Viewing images on a TV screen If you w ant to vi ew imag es on a T V screen, you need a TV wi th a video input jack and the A/V connec ting cable (su pplied). The c olor sy stem of th e TV must ma tch that of your digi tal still camera.
34 Deleting i mages , S et th e mode dial to , and turn on th e camera. Press b / B on the co ntrol bu tton to sele ct the i mag e yo u want to delete. , Press (Del ete). The image has not ye t been deleted at this poin t. • Y ou cannot delete the protected image (page 74).

47 Advanced still im age sh ooting Choosing a focus operation — AF Mode Mode dial: SET UP You ca n select from the follow ing three focus modes for your camera. Single AF ( ) This mode al lows accurat e focusing ov er a wide range from n ear to distant subjec ts, and is us eful fo r shoo tin g station ary subjects.
48 Shooting techniques When shooting with the subject at the edge of the frame, the camera may focus on the center instead of on the subject at the edge of the frame. In a case l ike this, us e AF lock to focus on the subject, and then recompose t he picture and shoot (except i n Continuous AF mode).

51 Advanced still im age sh ooting Adjust ing th e exposu re to the + side sh ifts the hi stog ram to the rig ht si de. Adjust ing th e expos ure to t he – si de shifts the hi stog ram to the left side. • The histogram also appears when the mode dial is set to , but you cannot adju st the exposure.
52 Spot metering ( ) Light is meas ured only for the specific region wher e the subject is located. This le ts you ad just th e exposure to the su bject e ven when th e subject i s backlit or there is str ong contrast be tween the subj ect and th e backgr ound.

56 • When you select the one-push white balance mode, the screen momentarily turns blue. • Wh en flash mode is set to (Forced flash) or (Slow synchro), the w hite balance is adjusted to the conditi on with t he flash emittin g.
57 Advanced still im age sh ooting • While using the NightShot f unction, you cannot use the following functions: – Focus Preset – LCD screen off –A E L O C K – Shooting with hologram AF – Shooting with the flash • While using the NightShot fu nction: – The white balance is set to Auto.

66 • The flash does not strobe when shooting in Burst 3, Exposure Bracket, T wilight , MPEG Movie or M ulti Bur st mode. • Y ou cannot have an external flash and the built- in fla sh strob e at the s ame time .
67 Advanced still im age sh ooting • Set the most a ppropriat e aperture value according to the guide number of the flash used and the distance to the subject. • The flash guide num ber varies according to the ISO sensitivity (page 111) of the c a mera, so be sure to check the ISO number .

Still image edi ting 77 • If you m ark an image shot in TIFF mode with a print (DPOF) mark, only th e uncompressed (TIFF) image is pr inted, and the JPEG image recorded at t he same time is not printed.
