13 Gett ing starte d • Be sure to char ge the Nick el Metal Hydride bat teries supplied wi th your camera b efore using t hem. • W e recommen d charging the b atteries in an amb ient tempera ture of be tween 10°C to 30°C (50 °F to 86°F).
14 Charging the Nickel Metal Hydride batteries • If the poles of the Nickel Metal Hydride batteries ar e dirty , the batteries may not charge properly. Occasionally clean the poles of the batteries and the terminals of the char ger by wiping them wi th a dry cloth .

To remove the batte ries Hold the camera wit h the batt ery/“Memo ry Stick” cover fa cing upw ard, open the cov er, and rem ove the batteries.
18 Using your camera abroad Power sources You ca n use your cam era in any country or area wi th the su pplied battery charg er wit hin 1 00 V to 240 V AC , 50/60 Hz. Us e a commerciall y available AC pl ug adapt or [a] , if necessary , dependi ng on the design of the wall ou tlet (wal l socket) [b] .
19 Gett ing starte d Turning on/off your camera , Slide the lens cover in the direction of the arrow or press the PO WER bu tton. When y ou open t he lens cover or press the POWER button , the po wer is au tomatica lly on. The POWER lamp (gre en) light s up.
20 Setting the date and time , Slid e the lens co ver in the direc tion of the arro w or pres s the POWE R but ton to turn on the power. The P OWER lamp ( green) l ights up and t he DATE NOTATION screen appears on the LCD screen. • This op eration is available no matter what position the mode switch is in.
21 Gett ing starte d , Se t the numeric value with v / V on the control button, then pr ess EXEC. The item to be set is indica ted with v / V . After enter ing the num ber, v / V moves t o the ne xt it em. Repeat this st ep unti l all of the items are set .

25 Shooting still images Image size You can ch oose th e imag e size (numbe r of pixel s) accordi ng to the ki nd of images you want to shoo t. Larger image sizes result in a larg er data size, which means f ewer im ages that you can record i n a “Mem ory Stick .
26 Basic still image shooting (using auto adjustment mode) , Set th e mode switch to ST ILL, and slide the lens co ver to turn on th e power. • Still images ar e recorded in JPEG format. • The exposure and focus are adjusted automatically at the factory setting.
27 Shooting still images , Pr ess an d hold the shu tter button halfway down. The beep soun ds but the image i s not yet reco rded. When th e AE/AF lock indica tor change s from fla shing to ligh ted up, the camer a is ready for shooting. • If you release the shutter button, the recording will be canceled.
28 Auto Focus When you try to shoot a subjec t that is difficul t to focus o n, the AE/A F lock indi cator cha nges to flashing slow ly. The Auto Foc us function ma y have diffic ulty workin g under the fo llowi ng conditi ons. In such case s, release the shu tter but ton, then recompos e the shot an d focu s aga in.
29 Shooting still images Using the self-timer , Set the mode switch to STILL , and press MENU. The me nu appe ars on t he LCD s creen. • Y ou can also carry out thi s operation when the mode swi tch is set t o MO VIE.
30 , Select [ ] with v / V on the c ontrol button, then press EX EC. Select [SELFTIMER] with v / V on the control b utton, t hen p ress EXE C. , Select [ON] with v / V on the control button, then pres s EXEC. When you press ME NU, the menu disappear s.
31 Shooting still images , Ce nter t he s ubject in the L CD screen, and press and hold the shut ter button halfway down. , Press the shutter butt on fully down. The self -timer lam p (page 10) flashes in red and the beep s ounds. The image will be shot a fter approx imate ly 10 seconds.

34 Shooting according t o scene conditions – Scene Selecti on When sh ooting night sc enes, sh ooting portrait s, or shooting land scapes, use the modes listed below to imp rove the qu alit y of your imag es. Soft snap mod e The sof t snap mode lets you shoot sk in colors in brighter and warmer tones for more beautif ul pictur es.

36 Setting the distance to the subject – Focus preset When sho oting an i mage using a pr eset dist ance to the subject, or whe n shooting a subject throug h a net or window glass, it is difficul t to achieve a prop er focu s using the au to focu s function.

78 Troublesh ooting Troubleshooting If you experi ence trouble wi th your ca mera, try the following so lutions. 1 First check the items on th e tables below. If code displays “C: ss : ss ” ap pear on the LCD screen, the self-diagnostics display functio n is w orking (page 86).
Troublesh ooting 79 Shooting images The battery life is short. • You are shooting/ viewing images in an extremely cold location. • The batteries are not charged enough. • The batteries are dead (page 93 ). — p Charge the batteri es (page 16). p Replace the batteries with a new one.
80 Your camera cannot record images. • No “Memor y Stick” is inserted. • The capacity of the “Memory S tick” is insufficie nt. • The write-protect switch on the “Memory Stick” is set to t he LOC K position. • You cannot shoot whil e the flash is charging.
Troublesh ooting 81 Viewin g images Dele ting im ag es Symptom Cause Solution Your camera cannot play back images. • The mode switc h is no t set to PLAY. • Your camera may not play back image files copied from the hard disk of your computer if the file name or file size has been changed or t he image has been modified.
82 Computer s Sym pto m Cause Solution You do not know if the OS of your computer is compatible. — p Check “Recommended computer environment” (page 56). You cannot install the USB driver. — • You are attem pting to install the USB driver on a machine that is not running a supported OS.
Troublesh ooting 83 “Memory Sti ck” You cannot turn on the camera during USB connection. • The camera and your computer are connected through a hub. p Connect the camera di rectly to your computer, or use a hub with output of 500 mA. The image cannot be played back on a computer.
84 Other Sym pto m Cause Solution Y our camera does not work. • The batte ry level is low. (The E indicator appears.) • The USB cable is connected. • The built-in microcomputer is not working properly. p Charge the batteries (p age 12). p Disconnect the USB cable, or operate on y our computer.
