8 L T ri pod receptacle (bottom surface) • The lens ring is remo vable so that you can attach an adaptor ring (not supplied). • Use a tripod with a screw length of less th an 5.5 mm ( 7 / 32 inch). 13 Getting started • T o use up the batter ies completely , put the camera in the slide show mode (page 6 5) and leave it that w ay until the batter ies are used up.

The ima ge size is sho wn by the numbe r of pixels (dot s) (horizonta l × ver tical) , whic h compos e an ima ge.

25 Shoot ing still ima ges Basic still image shooting – Usi ng auto mode Holding the cam era correctly When s hootin g pictu res w ith t he cam era, b e carefu l so that your fing ers do not blo ck the lens port ion, finder wi ndow, flash em itter, or AF illumina tor (pages 8, 9).

29 Shoot ing still ima ges Shooting close-ups – Macro For close- ups of subjects like flow ers or insects, shoot using the macr o feature . You can shoot subjects appr oaching up to 10 cm (4 in ches) wh en the z oom is s et to its W- end. How ever, th e availa ble focus distan ce depe nds on the zoo m po siti on.
30 • Wh en shooting in macr o mode, use the LCD screen. If you use the fi nder, the limits of what you see and what you actually shoot may be different. This is due to the parallax effect. • Wh en shooting in m acro mode, the focus range is very narrow and you may not be able to focus on the whole of the s ubject.

40 Viewin g images on a TV screen , Co nnect the supplied A/V connect ing cable to the A/ V OUT (MONO) jack of the camera an d the audio /video input jacks of the TV. If your TV has stere o type input jacks, connec t the audio pl ug (black) o f the A/V connec ting cab le to the Lch audio input jack.
41 Viewin g sti ll image s Watching images on a TV screen If you wa nt to view ima ges on a T V, you need a TV having a video input jack and the A/V co nnecti ng cable (sup plied). The colo r system of the TV must match as that of your di gital still cam era.

50 • Wh en you are shooting movies and you choose Multipoint AF , the distance to the center of the LCD screen is estimated as an ave rage , so the AF works ev en with a certain amount of vibration.
51 Advance d still im age shoot ing Shooti ng techni ques When shooting with the subject at the edge of the frame, or when using Center AF , the camera may focus on the c enter instead of on the subject at the edge of t he frame. In a case like th is, use AF lock to focus on the subject, and then recompos e the picture and s hoot.

54 Exposure In addition to the focus and other settings, it is also important to adjust the exposure in order t o take beautiful pictures. Exposure is the amount of light that the CCD of the digital still came ra is able to receive. This v alue changes according t o the combination of aperture and shutter speed.
55 Advance d still image shoot ing Adjusting th e exposure – EV adju stmen t You ca n manu ally sh ift the ex posu re value determin ed by th e camera. Use thi s mode when you do not get t he proper ex posure, for instan ce, the subjec t and its back ground have hi gh contrast (light and dark).
56 Displaying a histogram A histogram is a graph showing the brigh tne ss of a n ima ge. The horiz ont al axis shows the bri ghtness, and th e vertical axis shows the numbe r of pixels. The gra ph display indi cates a dark imag e when skewed to the left side, and a br ight image when skew ed to the rig ht side.
57 Advance d still image shoot ing Shooti ng technique s While shooting image s, the camera automatically determines the exposure. When shooting a whitish overall image such as a backlit subject or a snowy scene, the camer a judges that t he subject is bright and may set a darker exposure for the image.

For prep aration , you only need to select the USB c onnection in the SE T UP sett ings and connect the ca mera to the pr inter.

92 Viewing an image previously copied to a computer This op eration is re quired fo r viewing image fil es that have been copied prev iously to a c omputer and already deleted from the “Memory Stick” using the camera. Copy t he image files stored on your comput er to a “Memory Stick ” and v iew them o n the came ra.
93 Enjoyin g images on your computer • This software is compa tible with the DirectX technology . “DirectX” must be installed before using. • A separate en vironment f or operating th e recording device is required in order to write to CD-R s.
