11 Getting started Charging the batte ry pack , Open the ba ttery/“Me mory Stick ” cover. Slid e the cove r in the dire ctio n of th e arr ow. • Be sure to turn off your camera wh en cha rg in g t he ba tt er y pa ck ( pag e 15 ). • Y our camera operates with the “InfoLITHIUM” NP-FR1 battery pack (R type) (supplied).

14 Using t he AC adaptor , Open the DC IN jack cover and connect the AC Adap tor (supplied) to the DC IN jack of your c amer a. Open th e cove r in the ar row di rectio n as illustr ated ab ove. Conn ect the DC plug with the v mark facing the LCD screen side.

20 Image size and quality You can ch oose imag e size (number of pixels) and image quality (com pression ratio) ba sed on t he kind of image s you w ant to shoot. The image size is sho wn by the number of pixels (dots) (horizont al × vertical ), which comp ose an image.

22 Basic still image shootin g — Using auto adjustment mode Holding the cam era correctly When sh ootin g pi ctures with the camera, be careful so t hat your fingers do not block the lens por tion, find er wi ndow , fla sh em itte r or speak er (pa ge 8).
23 Shoot ing still ima ges , Press an d hold the shutter button h alfway down. The be ep sounds but the im age is not yet recor ded. When the AE /AF loc k indic ator changes from flashing to steadily li t, the camera is ready for shooti ng. (The LCD scre en may be frozen for a split second de pending on the subject.
24 Checking the last image y ou shot — Quick Review , Press b ( 7 ) on the control but ton. To return to the normal shooti ng mode, press li ghtly on th e shutter button or pr ess b ( 7 ) again. To delete t he image displayed on the LCD screen 1 Press (Del ete).

The or indicators flashes, and AF operates with priority on s ubjects located near the center .
26 Shooting close-ups — Macro The close- ups (Macro) recor ding mode is used when zoo ming up subjec ts suc h as flowers or in sects. Setting the z oom all the way to the W side lets you shoot subjec ts at dista nces as clos e as 6 cm ( 2 3/8 inches ).
27 Shoot ing still ima ges • When shooting in the close-ups (Macro) mode, use the LCD screen. If you s hoot using the finder , the range you can see through the finder may differ from the actual recording range.
28 Selecting a flash mode , Set the mode dial to , and press v ( ) on t he contro l button repeat edly to select a flash mode. Each time you press v ( ), the ind icator changes as follows. No indic ator (A uto ): The fl ash automati cally st robes when shooting images in a dark place or agai nst a light source .
29 Shoot ing still ima ges To prevent subjects’ eyes from appearing red Set [R ed Eye Reducti on] to [On] in the SE T UP se ttings (pa ge 113). The indicator appear s on t he LCD screen , and the f lash pre-stro bes before shoo ting to reduc e the red-ey e pheno menon.
30 Shooting images with the finder The find er is conveni ent when you wa nt to save battery po wer, or when i t is difficult to conf irm th e ima ge us ing the LCD sc reen . Each time you press , the display changes in t he following ord er. Histog ram on (Image informa tion can al so be displayed du ring playback.
31 Shoot ing still ima ges Inserting the date and time on a still image , Set the mode dial to SET UP. The SE T UP scr een appe ars. • The date and time is not inserted in M ulti Burst mode. • When images are shot with the date and time superimposed, the date and time cannot be removed later .
32 Shooting according to scene conditions — Scene Selection You can s hoot more effect ively by select ing the appr opriat e mode and th en pressi ng the shutter b utton. Twilight mode Allows you to shoot night scenes at far distance without losin g the dark at mosphere of t he sur roun dings .
33 Shoot ing still ima ges Snow mod e When sho oting snowy sce nes or other plac es where the whole s cree n appe ars whit e, use this mod e to prev ent sunk en colors and recor d clear im ages. Beach mode When shooting seaside or lakeside scenes, the blu e of the water is cle arly recor ded.

39 Viewing s till imag es Viewing images on a TV screen If you w ant to vi ew images o n a TV scr een, you need a TV with a video inpu t jack and the A/V multi ca ble (supplie d). The colo r system o f the TV m ust match that of your digi tal still camera.
40 Deleting i mages , Set the mode dial to , and turn on th e camera. Press b / B on the co ntrol bu tton to se lec t the ima ge yo u want to delete. • Note that you cannot restore deleted images. , Pre ss (Del et e). The image has not ye t been deleted at this poin t.

47 Advanc ed still image shooti ng Choosing an auto focus metho d You ca n set the AF ran ge finder fram e and the AF mode. AF range fin der frame This selects the focus position according to the su bject po sition and size. AF mode This sets the fo cus op erat ion st art an d sto p timing .
48 • When you use th e digital zoom or AF illumina tor , priori ty AF movement is gi ven to subjects in or near the center of the f rame. In this case the or indicator f lashes and the AF ran ge finder frame is not di splayed. • The AF range finder frame sele ction is limited according to the Scen e Selection mode (page 35).
49 Advanc ed still image shooti ng Shooting techniques When shooting with the subject at the edge of the frame, or when using Center AF , the camera may focus on the c enter instead of on the subject at the edge of the frame. In a case like t his, use AF lock to focus on the subject, and then recompos e the picture and s hoot.

52 Exposure In addition to the focus and o ther settings, it is als o imp ortan t to adj ust th e expo sure in order to take beautiful pi ctures. Exposure i s the amoun t of light that the CCD of the digi tal still cam era is able to receiv e. Th is value ch anges ac cordi ng to the co mbin ation of th e aper ture an d the shutter speed .
53 Advanc ed still image shooti ng Adjusting th e exposure — EV adju stme nt You can ma nually a djust the exposur e determin ed by th e camera. Use thi s mode when the p roper e xposure cannot b e obtain ed, f or examp le, wh en the c ontra st (differ ence bet ween ligh t and dark) betwee n the subje ct and the bac kgroun d is extrem ely large.
54 Displaying a histogram A histogram is a graph showing the brigh tne ss of a n ima ge. The horiz ont al axis shows the bri ghtness, and th e vertical axis shows the numbe r of pixels. The gra ph disp lay in dicate s a bri ght im age when skewed to the rig ht side, a dark im age when skewed to the left side.
55 Advanc ed still image shooti ng Shooti ng technique s When shooting images, the camera automatically sets t he exposure. When shooting a whitish overall image such as a backlit subj ect or a sno wy scene, the ca mera may judge that the subject is bright and set a darker exposure for the image.
