2 HP All-in-One overview Use the HP All-in-One to qui ckly and easily accomplish ta sks such as making a copy, scanning documents, or pri nting photos from a memory card. You can access many HP All-in-One functi ons directly from the control panel, wit hout turning on your computer.

6 Load originals and load paper You can load many differen t types and sizes of paper in the HP All-in-One, including letter or A4 paper, photo paper, transparencies, envelopes, and HP CD/DVD tattoo labels.
Choose papers for printing and copying You can use differ ent types and si zes of paper in the HP All -in-One. Review the foll owing recommendati ons to get the best printing an d copying quality. If you use plain or photo paper, the HP Al l-in-One can automatically det ect the paper type and size.

• Iron-On Transfers. • Greeting card pa per. • HP CD/DVD tattoo labels. Load paper This section describes the pro cedure for loading different types and sizes of paper in to the HP All-in-One for your copies or printouts.
To load fu ll-size pa per 1. Slide the paper-wid th guide to its outermost po sition. NOTE: If you are using letter or A4 paper or smalle r, make sure the tray extender is open all t he way.
3. Insert the stack of paper in to the input tray with the sho rt edge forward and the print side down. Slide the stack o f paper forward until it stops. CAUTION: Make sure that the HP All-in-One is id le and silent when you load paper into the in put tray.
To load 10 x 15 cm ( 4 x 6 inch) photo paper in the input tray 1. Remove all pape r from the input tr ay. 2. Insert the stack of photo paper into the far-ri ght side of the input tray with the short edge forward an d the print side down. Slid e the stack of photo paper f orward until it stops.
To load index cards i n the input tray 1. Remove all paper from the input tray. 2. Insert the stack of cards, prin t side down, into t he far-right side of the input tray. Slide the stack of cards forward until it stops. 3. Slide the paper-wid th guide inward against the stack of cards until it stops.
3. Slide the paper-w idth guide inward against the stack of envelo pes until it stops. Do not overlo ad the input tray; make sure the stack of envelop es fits within the inp ut tray and is not h igher than the top of the p aper-width guide.
HP CD/DVD Tattoo labels ▲ Place one sheet of CD/D VD tattoo paper in the in put tray with the prin t side down; slide the CD/DVD ta ttoo paper forward until it stops.

7 Print from your computer The HP All-in-On e can be used with any softwa re application that allows printing. Yo u can print a range of proje cts, such as borderless im ages, newsletters, greeti ng cards, iron-on transfers, and posters.
Make the HP All-in-One the default printer You can set the HP All-in-O ne as the default printer to use f rom all software a pplications. This means that the HP All-in-One is automatically sel ected in the printer list when you select Print from the File menu in a software a pplication.
5. Click the Features tab. 6. In the Resizin g Options area, click the appropriat e paper size from the Size li st. The following ta ble lists the suggested paper size setti ngs for the different types o f paper you can load in th e input tray.
View the print res olution The printer softw are displays the print resolution in dots per inch (dpi). The dpi varies according to the pa per type and print qua lity that you select in the prin ter software. To view the print resolution 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tray.
To change the page orientation 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tray. 2. On the File menu in your software applicati on, click Print . 3. Make sure the HP All- in-One is the selected prin ter. 4. Click the button t hat opens the Properties di alog box.
To preview your print job 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tray. 2. On the File menu in your softwa re application, click Print . 3. Make sure the HP All-in-One is the selected printer. 4. Click the button that opens the Properties dialog bo x.
Create pr inting shortcuts In addition to the printing shortcuts that are avai lable in the Printing Shortcuts list, you can create your own printing shortcuts.

To print a photo on photo paper 1. Remove all paper f rom the input tray , and then load the phot o paper print side do wn. 2. On the File menu in your software applicati on, click Print . 3. Make sure the HP All- in-One is the selected prin ter. 4. Click the button t hat opens the Properties di alog box.
6. In the Paper Type drop -down list, click More , and then select HP CD/DVD tattoo paper fr om the li st. 7. Click OK , and then click Print or OK in the Pr int dialog box. Print using Maximum dpi Use Maximum dpi mode to print high-qual ity, sharp images.
4. Click the button t hat opens the Properties di alog box. Depending on your sof tware application, this butto n might be called P roperties , Options , Printer Setup , Printer , or Prefer ences . 5. Click the Features tab. 6. In the Paper saving options area, select Manual from the Two-sid ed printing drop- down list.
Print a multiple-page document as a booklet The HP All-in-One a llows you to print your document as a sm all booklet, which you can fold and then staple together. For best results, design your docume nt to fit on a multiple of f our pages, such as an 8, 12, or 16-page program f or a child's school play or for a wedd ing.
10. Follow the inst ructions that appear on your screen for reload ing the paper to print on the second side, and th en click Continue . 11. When the entire docu ment has finished printing, fold the stack of paper in half, so that the first page is on top, then staple the docum ent along the crease.
7. If you want a borde r to appear around each page image printed o n the sheet of pap er, select the Print pa ge borders check box. 8. In the Page order list, click an appropriate pag e order option. The sample outp ut graphic is numbered to show how the pages will be o rdered if you select each option.
6. In the Layout Options area, select Front to Back in the Page Order option. NOTE: If you set your document to prin t on both sides of the page, the Front to back option is no t available. Your docum ent will automatica lly print in the correct order.
6. In the Pape r Type drop-down list, click More , and then sele ct the appropriate pap er type. TIP: If you want to m ake notations on the back of the transp arencies and erase them later wit hout scratching the original, click t he Advanced tab, and select the Mirro r Image check box.
Print a poster You can create a poster by print ing a document on multiple page s. The HP All-in-One prints dotted l ines on some pages to ind icate where to trim the pages before taping them together. To print a poster 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tray.
To print a Web page 1. Make sure you have pa per loaded in the input tray. 2. On the File menu in your Web browser, cli ck Print . The Print dial og box appears. 3. Make sure the HP All-in-One is the selected printer. 4. If your Web browser support s it, select the items on t he Web page that you want to include in t he printout.
3. Double-click the HP All-in-One icon. TIP: You can also dou ble-click the printer i con in the Windows t askbar. 4. Select the prin t job you want to cancel. 5. On the Document menu, click Cancel Printing or Cancel , or press the Delete key on your keyboard.

8 Use the photo features The HP All-in-On e is equipped with memory card sl ots which enable you t o insert a memory card and beg in printing ph otos from your digital came ra without uploadi ng your photos to a compute r first.

6. Press the Copi es button until th e number of copies you want t o print appears on the display. 7. Press the Print button. TIP: While the pho to is printing, you can con tinue scrolling thro ugh the photos on your memory card. When you see a photo you want to print, yo u can press the Print button to add that photo t o the print queue.
Print photos fr om the HP Photosmart Software You can use the HP Photo smart Software installed o n your computer to transfer phot os from a memory card to your computer’s hard drive f or advanced photo edit ing, sharing photos online, and printing from you r computer.
To edit photos 1. Insert a memory card in to the appropriate slot on the HP All-in -One. The software opens on your computer. 2. Click View , and then follo w the onscreen prompts to transf er your photos to the computer for vie wing and editing.

9 Use the copy features The HP All-in-One allows you to prod uce high-qual ity color and black-an d-white copies on plain or photo pa per. You can enlarge or reduce the size of an o riginal to fit a sp ecific paper size, adjust th e copy quality, and make high-quality copie s of photos, incl uding borderless copies.
Make multiple copies of the same original You can set the nu mber of copies from the control panel of the HP Al l-in-One or from the HP Photosma rt Software.
To make a borderl ess copy of a photo from the control p anel 1. Load photo pa per in the inpu t tray. NOTE: The HP All-in-One auto matically detects the type of paper you are usi ng. If you do not use photo paper, your copy will include a wh ite border around on e or more edges.

10 Use the scan features Scanning is the process o f converting text and pictures i nto an electronic format for your computer. You can scan a lmost anything (photos, magazine art icles, and text documents) on the HP All-in -One.
To scan to a computer 1. Load your original pri nt side down on the right front corner of the glass. 2. Ensure that there a re no memory cards in serted in the memory card slots on the HP All-in-One . 3. Press Scan . A preview image of the scan appears on your computer, where you can edit it.

11 Maintain the HP All-in-One The HP All-in -One requires l ittle maintena nce. Sometimes you mi ght want to clean the glass and lid backing to re move surface dust and ensure t hat your copies and scans remain clear. You wil l also need to replace, align, o r clean your print ca rtridges from time to time.
Clean the l id backing Minor debris can accumulate on the white document backing lo cated underneath the lid of the HP All-in-O ne. To clean the lid b acking 1. Turn off the HP All -in-One, unplug the power cord, and raise the lid. 2. Clean the whi te document backing with a soft cloth or sponge slightl y moistened with a mild soap and warm water.
To print a self-test report 1. Load letter o r A4 unused plain white paper into the input t ray. 2. Press and hold the Cancel button a nd then press the Start Copy Color bu tton. The HP All-in-On e prints a self-test repo r t, which might indicate the source of the printing problem.

Check the estimate d ink levels You can easily check the ink su pply level to determine how soon you might need to replace a print cartridge. The ink supply level show s an estimate of the amou nt of ink remaining in the print cartridges. TIP: You can also p rint a self-test rep ort to see if your print ca rtridges might need to be replaced .
To replace the print cartridges 1. Make sure th e HP All-in-One i s on. CAUTION: If the HP All-in -One is off when yo u open the print cartridge do or to access the print cart ridges, the HP All-in-One will no t release the cartridges for changing.
7. Remove the new prin t cartridge from its packaging and, being careful to touc h only the black plastic, gent ly remove the plastic tape by usin g the pink pull tab.
9. Close the print cartridge door. If you installed a new print cartridge, the H P All-in-One prints a pri nt cartridge alignment page. 10. When prompted, ensure plain white paper is loa ded in the input tray, then press the button next to OK .
One came with a p rint cartridge protector, you can u se an airtight pl astic contai ner to protect your print cartridge. NOTE: If you use a plastic con tainer, make sure the ink nozzle s on the print cartridge do not touch the pl astic.
NOTE: If you remove and rei nstall the same print cartridge, the H P All-in-One will not prompt you to a lign the print cartridges. The H P All-in-One remembers the alignment valu es for that print cartridge, so you do not n eed to realign the print cartridges.
To clean the print cartridge s from the HP Phot osmart Software 1. Load letter, A4, or legal unused plain whi te paper into the input tray. 2. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings , point to Print Settings , and th en click Printer Toolbox . NOTE: You can also open th e Printer Toolbox from t he Print Properties dialog box.
3. Lightly press down o n the print cartridge t o release it, and the n pull it toward you o ut of the slot. NOTE: Do not remove bot h print cartridges at the sam e time. Remove an d clean each print cartridge one at a time. Do not leave a print cartridge outside the HP All- in-One for more than 3 0 minutes.
NOTE: Clean the area arou nd the ink nozzles only if you co ntinue to see st reaks and smudges on your printed pages after you have already clea ned the print cartridges by using t he software you installed w ith the HP All-in-One .
8. Repeat if neces sary for the other print cart ridge. 9. Gently close the print cartridg e door and plug the power co rd into the bac k of the HP All-in-One .
12 Shop for printing supplies You can order HP products, such as recommended typ es of paper and print cartridges, online from the H P Web site. This section contai ns the following topics: • Order .

• Check the USB cable. If you are using an ol der cable, it might not be working prope rly. Try connecting it to another product to see if the U SB cable works. If you experience problems, the US B cable migh t need to be repl aced. Also ve rify that the cable does not exceed 3 meters (9.
• Do not reattach the prote ctive tape once it has been removed from t he print cartridge. Reattaching the plastic tape might damage th e print cartridge. Place the pri nt cartridge in the HP All-in-O ne immediately after removing the pl astic tape.
• Do not combine differe nt paper types and paper sizes in the input tray; the entire stack of paper in the input tray mu st be the same size and type. • Store printed p hotos under glass or in a storag e book to prevent bleed ing over time from high humid ity.
2. Gently pull the paper o ut of the rollers. CAUTION: If the paper tears when you are removing i t from the rollers, check the rollers and wh eels for torn pieces of paper that might be remaining inside the device. If you do not remove all the pieces of paper from the HP All-in-One, m ore paper jams are likely to occur.
2. Reinsert th e print cartridge by sliding it forward into the slot. The n push the print cartridge forward until it clicks into the socket. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 f or the tri-color print cartridge on the le ft side. 4. If the problem persists, pri nt a self-test report to determi ne if there is a problem with the print cartridges.
To print a self-test report 1. Load letter o r A4 unused plain white paper into the input t ray. 2. Press and hold the Cancel button a nd then press the Start Copy Color bu tton. The HP All-in-On e prints a self-test repo r t, which might indicate the source of the printing problem.
4. Click Clean the Print Cartri dges . 5. Follow the pro mpts until you are sati sfied with the qualit y of the output, and t hen click Done . If copy or print qualit y still seems poor after you clean the print ca rtridges, try cleaning the print cartri dge contacts before repl acing the affected print cartridge.
To replace the pri nt cartridges 1. Make sure the HP All- in-One is on. CAUTION: If the HP All-in-One is off when you open the print cartri dge door to access the print cartri dges, the HP All-in-One will not rel ease the cartridges for changing.
7. Remove the new print cartridge from it s packaging and, being ca reful to touch only the black plastic, gen tly remove the plastic tape by using the p ink pull tab.
9. Close the print cartri dge door. If you installed a new print cartridge, the HP All-i n-One prints a print cartri dge alignment pa ge. 10. When prompted , ensure plain white paper is load ed in the input tray, then press the button next to OK .
4. Turn off the HP All- in-One, wait one mi nute, then restart it. 5. Reinstall the H P All-in-One software. CAUTION: Do not co nnect the USB cab le to the computer until prompte d by the software installation screen.
Cause: You pressed the On button too quickly. Solution: The HP All-in-One mi ght not respond if you press t he On bu tton too quickly. Press the On button once. It m ight take a few minutes for the HP Al l-in-One to turn on. If you press the On button again during this ti me, you might turn the device off.

Solution: To retry the plug and pl ay 1. Verify that the co ntrol panel overlay i s firmly attached, unpl ug the HP All-in-On e power cord, and th en plug it in again. 2. Verify that the USB cable a nd power cord are plugged in. 3. Click Retry to retry the plug and play setup .

To uninstall from a Wind ows computer, method 1 1. Disconnect the HP All-in-One from your computer. Do not con nect the HP All-in-One to your computer unti l after you have reinstalled the software. 2. On the Window s taskbar, click Start , Programs or All Progr ams , HP , Photosmart C4200 All-in -One series , Uninstall .
1. Insert the HP Al l-in-One CD-ROM into your computer’s CD-ROM drive and then start the Setup prog ram. 2. Disconnect the H P All-in-One from your computer. 3. Select Uninstal l and fo llow the onscreen dire ctions. 4. Restart your computer. NOTE: It is important th at you disconnec t the HP All-in-One before restarting your computer.

Colors run into each other on th e printout Cause: The pr int or copy quality setti ng is set too high fo r the type of paper loaded in the HP All- in-One. Solution: Check the quality sett ing. Use a lower quality sett ing to decrease the amount of ink used f or printing or copying.
Solution: Make sure you have paper load ed correctly. For more information, see: “ Load paper” on page 21 Cause: The copy or print quality typ e setting on the HP All-i n-One is set too low. Solution: Check th e quality setting. Use a hi gher quality setting to increase the amount of ink used for printing.
For more information o n print cartridges, see “ Trou bleshoot print cartridges” on page 83 . Cause: The print quality setting on the HP All-in -One is set too low. Solution: Check the quality sett ing. Use a higher quality settin g to increase the amount of in k used for printing.
Solution: If t he paper you are using is too fibrous, the ink applied by the HP All-in- One might not fully cover the surface of the paper. Use HP Premium Papers or a ny other paper type that is appropriate for the HP All- in-One. For more information, see: “ Information o n paper” on page 81 Cause: The print paper type setti ng is incorrect.
Cause: More than o ne type of paper is loade d in the input tray. Solution: Load only one type of paper at a time. Paper is not pi cked up from the input tray Cause: There is not enough paper in the input tray. Solution: If the HP All-in-One is out of paper or there are only a f ew sheets remaining, load mo re paper in the input tray.
Cause: The wrong type of envelop e is loaded. Solution: Do not use shiny or embossed envelo pes or envelopes that have clasps or windows. Borderless printi ng produces unexpected resul ts Cause: Printing a borderless image f rom a non-HP softwar e application produces unexpected results.
Solution: Turn the HP All- in-One off, remove any objects t hat are blocking the prin t carriage (inc luding any packi ng materials), and then turn the HP All-in-One on again.
Solution: The printer driver status might have ch anged to eith er offline or stop printing . To check the prin ter driver status 1. In the HP Solution C enter, click the device tab. 2. Click Settings . 3. Click Status . If the status is offline or stop printing , change t he status to r eady .
Some documents take a long time to print. If nothing has printed severa l minutes after you sent a print job to the H P All-in-One, check your computer t o see if there are any messages. Cause: The HP All-in-One i s not the selected printer. Solution: Make sure the H P All-in-One i s th e selected printer in your soft ware application.
Solution: Turn the HP All-in-One off, remove any object s that are blocking the print carriage (including any packing mat erials), and then turn the HP All-in-One on again. Cause: The HP All-in-One is out of p aper. Solution: Load pa per in the input tray.
Solution: Remove the stac k of paper from the inpu t tray, reload the p aper, and then slide the paper w idth guide inward until i t stops at the edge of the pa per. For more information, see: “ Load paper” on p age 21 Cause: A stack of envel opes is loaded incorrec tly.
Solution: Make sure the l ayout of the document you are t rying to print fits on a paper size supported by th e HP All-in-One. To preview the print layout 1. Load the correct paper size into the input tray. 2. Preview your prin t job before sending it to the HP All-in-One.
Solution: If the HP All -in-One has only a few sheets remaining, load more paper i n the input tray. If there is plenty of paper in the input tray, remove the paper, tap the stack of pape r against a flat surface, and reloa d the paper into the input t ray.
Memory card troubleshooting Use this section to solve these memory card proble ms: • My memory card no longer wo rks in my digi tal camera • The HP All-in-O ne does not read the memory card • Th.
Solution: Check the comp uter screen for an erro r message telli ng you that the images on the memory card are corrupted. If the file system on the card is corrupt, reformat the me mory card in your digital camera. CAUTION: Reformatting the memory card will de lete any photos stored on th e card.
Solution: Turn the HP All-in- One on. Cause: The computer is turned off. Solution: Turn the computer on . Cause: The HP All-in-One is not prop erly connected to the computer . Solution: Check the conn ection from the HP All-in-One to you r computer. Verify that the USB cabl e is securely plugged into the USB port on the back of the H P All- in-One.
the HP All-in-One a nd plugged into a power outlet. Press the On button to turn on the HP All-in-One. Cause: The origi nal is placed incorrectly on the glass. Solution: Load the original pri nt side down on the right front corner of the glass as shown below.
Solution: Load the orig inal print side down on the right front corner of the gl ass as shown below. Resize to Fit is not workin g as expected Cause: You are trying to increase the size of a n original that is too small. Solution: Resize to Fit can only e nlarge the original up to th e maximum percentage allowed by your model .
Solution: Load the original pri nt side down on the right front corner of the glass as shown below. To copy a photo, position the photo on the glass so that the long edge of the photo i s along the front edge o f the glass. Cause: Debris mig ht be stuck on the glass or on the back of the document l id.
The printout is bla nk Cause: The original is placed incorrectly on the gl ass. Solution: Load the orig inal print side down on the right front corner of the gl ass as shown below. Cause: The print cartridges need to be cleaned or might be out of ink.

Solution: Make sure you fully insert the memory card into the appropriate sl ot on the HP All-in-One. If the memory card is no t inserted properly, the HP All-in-One w ill not respond and the green Photo li ght (near the memory card slots) will blink rapidly.
Paper or ientation e rror Cause: Paper in the in put tray is in land scape orientation . Solution: Insert paper into t he input tray with the sho rt edge forward and the print side down. Slide th e paper forward until it stop s. Cannot lo ad paper fro m input tray Cause: There is not enough paper in the input tray.
Cause: The print carriage is blocked. Solution: Open the print cartridge door to access the print carriage area. R emove any objects that a re blocking the print ca rriage, includin g any packing ma terials. Turn the HP All-in-One of f and then turn it on again.
Solution: If the HP Al l-in-One is not properly connect ed to the computer, communicatio n errors can occu r. Make sure the USB cable is secure ly connected to the HP All-in-One an d the computer, as shown below.
