Chapter 2: Sy stem Setup 2-2 Setting Up a New Sonos S y stem F ollow the step-by-step instructions to en sure that yo u set up yo ur Sono s® Digital Music System correctly.
Chapter 2: System Setup 2-3 Step 1: Connect a S onos component to your home network Connect the Eth ernet cabl e from an open por t on your broadband router to any of the Ethernet switch conn ectors o n the back of a ZonePlayer or ZoneBridge.

Chapter 2: Sy stem Setup 2-6 Step 2: Place the Z onePlayers in the rooms of your choice Place the ZonePlayers in the rooms of your choice. If you are setting up a ZonePlayer 100, attach the speake rs. If you are setting up a ZonePlayer 80, conne ct it to an ex ternal amplifier .
Chapter 2: System Setup 2-7 The Mute button indicator and the ZonePlayer Status indicator will begin to flash. (If this Zone Player was previously connected to another So nos Digital Music System, the ZonePlayer Status indicator may light solid white instead.
Chapter 2: Sy stem Setup 2-8 Step 3: Install software If your operating system is Macintosh® OS X, Windows Vista™ or W indows® XP , simply insert the S onos System Setup CD-ROM and f o llow the on-screen instruc tions to install the software, configure your music sy stem, and set up access to y our music files.
Chapter 2: System Setup 2-9 Step 4: Add the Sonos Controller Plug your Sonos Controller into the powe r adapter and follo w the prompts on the Controller’ s screen to add it to your music system.
Chapter 2: Sy stem Setup 2-10 Adding T o An Existing Sonos S yst em When and why should I use a wireless c onnection? The Sonos Digital Music system uses a built-in wireless c onnection to communicate between Sono s components.
Chapter 2: System Setup 2-11 Use a Sonos ZoneBridge to replace the ZonePlayer that is currently wired to your home network , or place a ZoneBr idge in any location to ex tend the wireless range of your Sonos Digital Music System. 1. Attach the pow er adapter and plug in the ZoneBridge.
Chapter 2: Sy stem Setup 2-12 if desired. A Sonos ZoneBridge will not display in your Z ones menu after it is set up. If you wish to change the settings for this device, yo u can choose one of the following options: •U s i n g t h e D esktop Controller software, select Zone s > Zone Br idg e S et ti ng s .

Fro m t h e Music menu, select Sy stem Settings > Zone Pl ayer S et ti ng s , and press OK . I f you wish to turn off a ZoneBridge status indicat or light, select ZoneBr idge Settin gs instead.
Chapter 2: Sy stem Setup 2-16 When a Z onePla yer is in Sonos Extender mode, it does not display in your Zones menu. When you change it back to normal operation using the Zo nePlayer S etting s screen, it will appear as an unnamed zone and you can rename it at that time.

Chapter 2: System Setup 2-21 • The default (typical) line -i n level for the selected device type is displayed. Y ou can increase or decrease the le vel, but if the level is set too high, you ma y expe- rience clipping at higher volume levels. T o connect using Sonos Controller Fro m t h e Music menu, select Line-In Sources and pr ess OK .
Chapter 2: Sy stem Setup 2-22 Changing the line-in encoding setting The audio from line-in sources can be encoded to produce compressed or uncompressed audio . W e recommend the following usage guidelines: Use Uncompressed if: • Y ou want optimal performance with home theaters.

Y our S onos Digital M usic System is designed to be always on; the system uses minimal elec tricity when not playing music .
Chapter 2: Sy stem Setup 2-24 Mute butt on • Lights solid green when sound is muted. • Flashes green ra pidly when household mute or unm ute is about to take place. • Flas hes g reen slow ly when ZonePlayer is connec ting to your music sy stem.
