I NTR ODUCTION 1-4 • User-Definable Application Sensing Tunnel Y ou may define special applications that require multiple connections such as Internet gaming, video conferencing, and Inter net telephony . The Wirel ess Barr icade will then sense the application type and open a multi-port tunnel for it.
I NTR ODUCTION 1-5 • Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol – Provides a secure tunnel for remote client access to a PPTP s ecurity gateway. PPTP includes provisions for call origination and flow control required by ISPs.

I NSTALLATION 2-5 System Requirements Y ou must meet the following minimum requirements: • Internet access from your local telephone company or Internet Service Provider (ISP) using a DSL mod em or cable modem.
I NSTALLATION 2-6 Y ou should also remember to tur n off the pow er, remove th e power cord from the outlet, and keep your hands dry when handling the Wireless Bar ricade. Basic Installation Procedure 1. Connect t he LAN : Y ou can connect the Wireless Barricade to your PC , or to a hub or switch.
I NSTALLATION 2-7 Attach to Your Network Using Ethernet Cabling The four LAN por ts on the Wireless Bar ricade can auto-neg otiate the connection speed to 10 Mbps Ethernet or 1 00 Mbps F ast Ether net, as well as the transmission mode to half-duplex or full-duplex.
I NSTALLATION 2-8 Notes: 1. Use 100-ohm shielded or unshielded twisted-pair cable with RJ-45 connectors for all connections. Use Category 3, 4 or 5 for connections that operate at 10 Mbps, and Category 5 for connections that operate at 100 Mbps. 2. Make sure each twisted-pair cable does not exceed 100 meters (328 feet).
I NSTALLATION 2-9 Computers equipped with a wireless adapter can communicate with each other as an independent wireless LAN by configuring eac h computer to the same radio chan nel. Howe ver , the Wireless Barricade can provide access to your wired/wireless LAN or to the Internet for all w ireless workstations .
I NSTALLATION 2-10 Attach the Wireless Barricade to the Internet If Internet ser vices are provided through an xDSL or cable modem, use unshielded or shielded twisted-pair Ethernet cable (Categ or y 3 or g reater) with RJ-45 plugs to connect the broadband modem directly to the W AN port on the Wireless Bar ricade.

N AVIGATING THE W EB B RO WS ER I NTERFACE 4-2 Navigating the Web Browser Interface The Wireless Bar ricade’ s manag ement interface features a Setup Wizard and an Advanced Setup section. Use the Setup Wizard if you w ant to quickly setup the Wireless Bar ricade for use with a cable modem or DSL modem.
C ONFIGURING THE W IR ELESS B AR RICADE 4-3 Making Configuration Changes Configurable parameters hav e a dialog bo x or a drop-down list. Once a configuration change has been made on a page, be sure to clic k the “ Apply” or “Next” button at the bottom of the page to enable the new setting .
S ETUP W IZARD 4-4 F or accurate timing of client filtering and log events, y ou need to set the time zone. Select your time zone from the dropdo wn list.
C ONFIGURING THE W IR ELESS B AR RICADE 4-5 Cable Modem Y our ISP may hav e giv en you a host name. If so , enter it into this field. Click “Finish” to complete the setup . The Status page will open to allow you to view the connection status, as well as other infor mation.
S ETUP W IZARD 4-6 Fixed-IP xDSL Some xDSL Internet Ser vice Providers ma y assign a fix ed (static) IP address for your gateway . If you ha ve been provided with this infor mation, choose this option and enter the assigned IP address , subnet mask, gateway IP , and DNS IP addresses for the Wireless Bar ricade.
C O N FIGURING TH E W IR EL ESS B AR RICADE 4-7 PP PoE Enter the PPPoE user name and password assigned by your Service Provider. The Service Name is normally optional, but may be required by some service providers. Leave the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) on the default value (1492) unless you have a particular reason to change it.
A DV ANC ED S ETUP 4-8 Advanced Setup Use the web management interface to define system parameters , manage and control the Wireless Bar ricade and its por ts , or monitor network conditions . The following table outlines the selections av ailable from this prog ram.
C ONFIGURING THE W IR ELESS B AR RICADE 4-9 System Time Zone Sets the time zone for the Wireless Bar ricade. This infor mation is used for log entries and client access control.
A DV ANC ED S ETUP 4-10 Password Settings Use this menu to restrict access based on a password. By default, there is no passw ord. F or security you should assign one before exposing the Wireless Barricade to the Internet. P asswords can contain from 3–12 alphanumeric c haracters and are not case sensitiv e.
C O N FIGURING THE W IR EL ESS B AR RICADE 4-11 Remote Management Allows a remote PC to configure, manage, and monitor the Wireless Barricade using a standard web browser. Check “Enable” and enter the IP address of the remote host. Click “APPLY.
A DV ANC ED S ETUP 4-12 WAN Specify the W AN connection type provided by y our Inter net Ser vice Provider , then click “More Configuration” to enter detailed configuration parameters for the selected connection type. Dynamic IP The Host Name is optional, but may be required by some ISPs .
C O N FIGURING TH E W IR EL ESS B AR RICADE 4-13 PP PoE Enter the PPPoE user name and password assigned by your Service Provider. The Service Name is normally optional, but may be required by some service providers. The MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) governs the maximum size of the data packets.

C ONFIGURING THE W IR ELESS B AR RICADE 4-15 Static IP Address If your Internet Ser vice Provider has assigned a fixed IP address, enter the assigned address and subnet mask for the Wireless Barricade, then enter the gateway address of yo ur ISP .
A DV ANC ED S ETUP 4-16 DNS Domain Name Ser vers map numerical IP addresses to the equiv alent domain name (e.g ., www .smc.com). Y our ISP should provide the IP address of one or more domain name ser vers .
C ONFIGURING THE W IR ELESS B AR RICADE 4-17 LAN LAN IP Use the LAN menu to configure the LAN IP address for the Wireless Bar ricade and to enabl e the DHCP ser ver for dynamic c lient addres s allocation.

F or automa tic 64-bit security , you enter a passphrase that is used to create four keys (as sho wn below). The automatic 128-bit security generates a single key by entering a passphrase.
C ONFIGURING THE W IR ELESS B AR RICADE 4-21 If you u se encryption, configure the same k eys used for the Wireless Bar ricade on each of your wireless clients . Note that the Wired Equivalent Priv acy (WEP) protects data transmitted between wireless nodes , but does not protect any transmissions ov er your wired netw ork or ov er the Internet.
A DV ANC ED S ETUP 4-22 Virtual Server If you configure the Wireless Barricade as a vir tual ser ver, remote users accessing ser vices such as web or FTP at y our local site via public IP addresses can be autom atically redirected to local se r vers configured with priv ate IP addresses .
C ONFIGURING THE W IR ELESS B AR RICADE 4-23 Enabling Special Applications Some applications , such as Inter net gaming, videoconferencing, Inter net telephony and others, require m ultiple connections. These applications cannot work with Netw ork Address T ranslation (NAT ) enabled.

W hen the SPI feature is turned on, all the incoming packets will be block ed unless cert ain types of traffic types are check ed by the users .

C ONFIGURING THE W IR ELESS B AR RICADE 4-33 Tools Use the “T ools” menu to backup the current configuration, restore a previously sav ed configuration, restore f actor y settings, update firmware, and reset the Wireless Ba r ricade. Configuration Tools Choose a function and click “More Configuration.
A DV ANC ED S ETUP 4-34 Backup Backup allows y ou to sav e the Wireless Bar ricade’ s configuration to a file. Y ou can then chec k “Restore” to restore the sa ved bac kup configuration file. “R estore to factory defaults” resets the Baricade to the original settings .
