8 SAFETY PRECA UTIONS Do not fire the flash close to eyes. Otherwise, the bright light woul d damage the eye. Keep a t least 1m/3feet d istance between face and the camera, when taking a picture with flash. Do not cover the flash with your finger or hand, it can cause skin burn.

19 LOADING THE BA TTER Y A lithium-ion battery BP-21 is provided with the SD1 came ra. Charge the battery fully before u sing the came ra for the first time. Please charge the battery with the supplied ba ttery charger BC -21 no power is le ft in the battery .
20 LOADING THE BA TTER Y 1 Confirm that the D -dial is in the position, and open the battery compartment cover by rotating the battery compartment cover latch, a s shown i n the i llustration . 2 Insert the batter y in accorda nce with the instruction inside the battery co mpartment.
21 TO RE MOVE THE BA TTER Y 1 Tu r n t h e D -dial to the positi on, and open the battery compartment cover by rotating the battery compartment cover latch, as shown in the illustration. 2 Eject the batte ry by sliding the battery comp artm ent cover latch in the direc tion of the arrow , as shown in the illustration.

25 CAUTION !! • The SD1 camera contains a du st protector, located inside the len s mount. The dust protector is a very delicate device. Take ca re not to scratch its surfa ce. Touc hing or pu shing it wit h yo ur fingers c an easily damage it. If there is dirt or dust on it, p lease refer to the Maintenance sec tion of your manu al ( P.
26 SETTING THE LANGUAGE Y ou should receive the SD1 camera pre-set to English, how ever , if necessary , you can change the camera language yourse lf. 1 Make sure the came ra is tu rned on. 2 Press the butto n on the ba ck of the camera to di splay the Camera Se t-up Menu.
27 SETTING THE TIME AND DA TE The SD1 camera records the date and time when each ima ge is capture d and stores this information with the image. T o ensure that the correct information is recorded wit.

39 INSERTING AND RE MOVING THE CARD The SD1 camera uses a CompactF lash™ (CF) card (T ype1) to store the data. T ype II Co mpactFlash™ an d hard disk type card s cannot be used. TO INSERT THE CARD 1 Set the D -dial to the positi on. 2 Open t he CF car d cover , as shown in th e illustration.
40 TO REMOVE THE CARD 1 Set the D -dial to the position. • Make sur e that th e CF card bu sy light is off, before continuing. 2 Slide the CF card co ver until it pops open.
41 FORMA TTING THE CARD New cards must b e formatte d before us e. In addition, cards with co rrupt or incompatible file systems may need to be formatted befo re use. 1 Tur n t h e D -dial to the “Drive-Area”. Press the button and select [ Camera Settings ] ( P.
42 FRAME NUMBER COUNTER The number of images that can be recorded on the card is displayed on the viewfinder display and the Function Disp lay . z The number o f images that can be recorded on the card depen ds on the settings you choose. For example, in the illustration on the left, 32 pictures can be stored on the card.
43 DIOPTER ADJUSTMENT Adjust the viewfin der diopter so th at you can see clearly t hrough the view finder . While looking through the viewfinder , rotate the diopter adjuster to the left or to the right, until the image appe ars sharp on the focus screen.
44 SHUTTER BUTT ON The shu tter bu tton of t he SD1 cam eras has two posi tions. Wh en you pr ess the shutter button hal fway , the camera’ s autofocus and Exposure Systems activate. When you pres s the button “all -the-way dow n”, and the shutter w ill releas e to take a pict ure.
45 BASIC OPERA TION SELECTING THE EXPOSU RE MODE The features and the operati on methods of the four dif ferent exposure mo des of the camera are explained b elow .
46 When this symbol blinks, the shu tter speed may be too slow and the picture ma y be blurr ed. In th is case , pleas e use a f lash ( P .51,81 ) or a tripod to prevent blurri ng. PROGRAM SHIFT Y ou can change the com bination of shutte r speed and ape rture value, which were automati cally sele cted by the came ra.
47 A APERTURE PRIORITY AE After you se t the apertu re value, th e camera will de termine the appropriate shutter speed. If yo u select smaller ape rtures, depth of field w ill be greater . Larger apertures tend to blur the background, as depth of field will be shallower .
48 S SHUTTER SPEED PRIORITY AE When you set the desired shutter sp eed, the camera will select th e appropriate aperture val ue for correct exposure. Y ou can achieve stop action effect s by selecting a fast shutter spe ed, or give the feeling of motion to a moving subject by selecting a slow shutter speed.
49 M MANUAL EXPOSURE Set both the shu tter speed and aperture val ue according to the indication of the exposure meter . Y ou can change the exposu re, as you desire. 1 Set the D -dial to the “Drive -Area” ( P. 1 3 ). 2 Set the Mod e dial to the “ M ” position.
50 BULB SETTING When long time exposures are r equired (for shooting night scene s or very dark subjec ts) the use of the “Bulb” se tting is recommende d. Please use a tripod, when t aking pictures with this setting. 1 Set the D -dial o n the “Drive Area” ( P.
51 USING THE BUIL T -IN FLASH The camera has a built-in flash for t aking picture s at night or in low light. USING THE BUIL T -IN FLASH P mode, us e this mode for autom atic photography . The flash sync speed and aperture value are set automa tically .
52 CAUTION !! • To prevent overhe ating and protect th e built-in flash unit after using contin ous shooting with flash, please do not use your f lash for a while .
53 CAUTION !! • When P and A modes are showing the shutter speed as 1/200sec., the actual shutter spee d value is 1 /180sec. In the c ase of S and M modes, please select 1/200sec., if you wish to set the shutter s peed to 1/180sec. FLASH FUNCTION SETTINGS The buil t-in flas h has severa l functio ns beside s normal flash.
54 SLOW SYNC When using the flash with P / A mode, the shutter speed va lue, which will reduce camera s hake, is set a utomatically . The slow synch ro mode changes the shu tter speed up to 3 0 second depending o n light condition. This mode is suitable for a portrai t in a nightscape.
55 FOCUSING Adjustment of autofocus and m anual focus operation are explained b elow . HOW TO USE AUTOFOCUS It is possible to use Auto focus fun ction only with AF Lenses. Y our camera is equipped with h ighly precise AF System and in corporates two di fferent autofocus modes.
56 In such cases, please use one of the following focusing methods. 1. Use the Focus Lock function to focus on anothe r subject, which ha s a similar focus ing dis tan ce as y our s ubject. 2. Set the lens to MF mode and fo cus manually . SELECTING THE AUTOFOCUS MODE It is possible to set the A utofocus mode fr om the Quick Se t Menu ( P.
57 AF POINT SELECTION The SD1 is equ ipped with 1 1 focusing points. Sele cting the AF point can be done automatically or manually by the photographer . Press button and select the desired AF point by rotating the A- dial ( ) displayed in the viewfinder .
58 AF AUXILIAR Y LIGHT The built-in AF auxiliary light of the SD 1 enables focusing in low light conditions. z The AF aux iliary light c an be us ed wit h (Single AF mode) a nd automatic o r center focus AF point selection only . z The AF auxiliary light is ef fective with the cent er focus of the automatic AF select ion only .
59 3 Keep the shutter button de pressed halfway while you compo se the picture as desired. Then press the shutter button the re st of the way to take picture. z Focus Lock with the shutter button can be used with (single AF mode) only . The AF c annot be locked in (continuous AF mode).
60 AF DRIVE AND AF BUTT ON SETTINGS The SD1 is equipped with th e button. It is possible to allocate th e function of AF Lock or AF drive to the button. Please set from [ Capture Settings ] ( P. 2 8 ) → [ A F Drive Setting ]. Off / AF-On If you woul d not like to alloca te any fun ction t o the button, please select this mode.
61 OPERA T ION OF THE DRIVE MODE Operation of the self-timer , and other function s of the camera are explained by the follow ing: DRIVE-AREA Some of the important operatio ns and settings of the camera can be activa ted by th e drive ar ea of t he D -dial.
62 CONTINUOUS SHOOTING In this mode, wh en you keep the shutte r button fully depressed, the camera will take pi ctures continuously . At the time of continuous shooting the number of fra mes per s ec.
63 SELF TIMER When you want to include yourself in the picture or avoid camera shake, please use the self-timer . When you set the self-timer to 10s , then the shutte r will be released 10seconds aft er you f ully pr ess the sh utter button.
64 z It is possible to chang e the exposure ti ming of mirror lock-up photo graphy . Please set from [ Capture Se ttings ] ( P. 2 8 ) → [ UP setting ]. Shutter button (Default) After the mirror is raised, exposure will be mea sured by pressing the shutte r button halfwa y .
65 ADV ANCED OPERA TION This section explai ns the application of the more advanced functions of your ca mera, when co mposing the ex pression s of your picture. SETTING THE WHITE BALANCE (WB) The color of light reflected by an object can vary depending on the color of the light source illuminating it.
66 It is possible to select the white balance o ptions from the Quick S et Menu ( P. 3 7 ) or the Function Displa y ( P. 3 5 ). z If Custo m White Bala nce ( ) is selected, the white balance data which you captured from [ Custom WB ] in [ Capt ure Set ting s ] ( P.
67 SETTING THE SENSITIVITY （ ISO EQUIV ALENCY ） The photosensitivity of digita l cameras is described in terms of “ISO equivalent” like silver-halide film ca meras. (ISO sen sitivity P. 1 2 0 ) While pressing the button, rotate S -dial ( ) to set t he desired IS O sensiti vity .
68 IMAGE FILE SETTING The file size changes depe nding on resolution mode and recording quality selected. Image Size (Resolution mode) ( HI ) 4704 × 3136 ( MED ) 3264 × 2176 ( LOW ) 2336 × 1568 Image Quality RA W (RA W) 45 MB 24 MB 12 MB FINE (JPEG) 10 MB 5 MB 2.
69 TIP • When RA W+JP G is s elect ed, the Imag e Quality of JPEG wil l be FIN E . • When RA W+J PG is selected, the selected Image Size will be appli ed to both the RAW and JPEG files. COLOR MODE It is possible to select the desired Color Mode depen ding on the shooting conditions.
70 TIP • It is possibl e to make pi ctures ac cording t o your inte nsion by the combinat ion of Color Mod e and Picture S ettings. For example, when Colo r Mode is set to Vivid and the cursor of Saturation in Pic ture Settings is set to + side, pictures will be made m ore vivid.
71 z JPEG is compre ssed af ter p aramet er adjus tment. I n the case of RA W for mat, parameter information is recorded without adjustment. It is possible to re-adjust RA W images using the su pplied Sigma Photo Pro software. z Please set color space to sRGB for regular u sage.
72 SPOT METERING The camera will meas ure the brightnes s of only the S pot Metering Circl e. AE LOCK The camera will fix and memorize the exposure value w hilst the “AE” Lock button is depress ed. When you wish t o lock t he exposur e of a sub ject off-center , AE lock is very useful.
73 z When the subject is out of focus during AE lock operation, remove your finger from shutter button and pres s the shutter button h alfway again , or remove your finger from the AE lock button and restart from the beginning. z It is possible to continue AE Lock even if th e finger is released fro m the button.
74 EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION If you want to in tentionally overexpose o r underexpose the picture, use th is function. While pre ssing button, turn the S -dia l ( ) to set the desired compensation v alue. Then, release the Expo sure Compensation butto n.
75 FLASH EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION It is possib le to comp ensate the flas h output level without ch anging the background’ s exposure. While pre ssing the button, tu rn the A -dial ( ) or S -dial ( ) to set the compen sation amount.
76 AUTO BRACKETING This function of the came ra lets you t ake a sequ ence of pictu res of the same subj ect at thr ee differen t expos ure level s; Appropr iate E xposure , Under Exposure and Ove r Exposure. If it is dif ficult to determine the proper exposure, please use this function.
77 z The exposure bracketing ca n be used with 4 different modes. P Mode ; Both shutter spee d and aperture value will be chang ed. A Mode ; Onl y shutter speed will be changed. S Mode ; Onl y aperture value will be changed. M Mode ; Only shutte r speed will be cha nged.
78 Auto Bracketing mod e can be used in combination with Expo sure Compensation. Y o u can take pictures with Auto Bracketing mode based on a compensated exposure, which you set. T o d o so, please set both the Auto Bracke ting mode and Exposure Compensa tion mode as desired .
79 SETTING OF THE C AMERA 3 Please set from [ Capture Settings ] ( P. 2 8 ) → [ RC Chan nel ] and select the same channel number as th e remote controller . 4 Check tha t the su bject is framed co rrect ly . Af ter y ou set the f ocus, we recommend setting the lens switch to MF position.
80 USING THE MIRROR LOCK-UP WITH REMOTE CONTROL When using mirror-up mo de with the remote co ntroller , we recommend that after adjustin g the focus, fu lly depr ess th e shutter bu tton of the c amera once, to lock-up the m irror , and then release the shutter by remote contro l.
81 DEPTH-OF-FIELD PR EVIEW BUTT ON Normally , the lens’ aperture is always fully opened, except at the time the picture is actually taken , for looking through the viewfin der under maximum brightness conditions.

83 The SD1 is equipped w ith a PC Synchro T e rminal, which accepts a cable connection fro e xternal/studio fla sh units. CAUTION!! • S-TTL auto flash d oes not work, if PC Synchro Terminal is used. • Set the came ra’s exposure mode to M and set to flash synchronized speed Sync (1/180) or a shutter speed of 1/160 or lower.
84 z If [ Ap pl ie d R otate ] in [ Playback Menu ] ( P. 2 8 ) is set to [ Off ], the ver tically oriented images are displayed horizontally . WARNING !! • If the images are taken while the came ra is pointed up or do wn, the vertical posit ion infor mation may not be r ecorded p roper ly.
85 SA VE THE CUSTOM MODE SETTING 1 Set the abo ve settings to your desired combination. 2 In [ Camera Settings ] ( P. 2 8 ) → [ Custom Mode Setting ], select from C1 , C2 or C3 by using buttons. After selecting , press the button. A confirmation dialog will appear .
86 REVIEWING , DELETING AND MODIFYING IMAGES This section ex plains how to review , delete, and m odify images afte r they have been captu red. TIP • The SD1 may not be able to display images captured by other camera s, or “SD1” images that have been renamed o r moved from the DCIM folder on the card.
87 TIP • To manually turn o ff the Quick Previe w image, press the button or the shutter button halfway. • It will not be possib le to zoom in to the previe w image, each of the [ Playback Menu ] ( P.28 ) settings, or ch ange to another image while the Qui ck Preview is display ed.
88 VIEWING ONE IMAGE A T A TIME Press button on the b ack of the camera to see recorded image s in Single- Image View . While in Sing le-Image V iew: z Rotate the A -dial ( ) to the right to see the next i mage. z Rotate the A -dial ( ) to the left to see th e previous i mage.
89 MAGNIFYING IMAGES (ZOOMED-IN VIEW) Reviewed images can be magnified, making it possible to check image details and f ocusing. While reviewing images, rotate the S -dial ( ) to the positi on. The magnificatio n ratio will be changed as follows. Original → X1.
90 VIEWING NINE IMAGES A T A TIME (CONT ACT SHEET VIEW) Images can be view ed in a "cont act sheet" of nine thumbnail i mages. While reviewing images, ro tate the S -dial ( ) to the position. WHILE IN CONT ACT SHEET VIEW: z Press the buttons to chang e the thumbnail image selection.
91 VIEWING IMAGE INFORMA TION The Im age Info Sc reen co ntains ad ditiona l information about each image. Press the button from Single-Ima ge or Contact Sheet View .
92 * 3 In AF mode, the AF p oint which was used to achieve focusing wil l be illuminated in red. If the pi cture w as t aken w it hout focusing, the AF points will not be illuminated in re d. In MF mode, if the pi cture was taken with a focus indicator lit, that AF point will be illuminat ed in red.
93 HIST OGRAM The histogram is a graph depicting the di stribution o f brightness values in the image for each of the three color chann els (Red, Green , and Blue). The horizontal a xis shows the brigh tness level, with darker pixel s towards th e left side and brig hter pixels toward the righ t.
