Notes on Discs 6 This DVD Player can playback the following discs. *1 This unit can play CD-R and CD-RW discs recorded in CD Audio or Video CD format, with MP3 audio files or with JPEG image files. However, there may be some discs that cannot be played back with this unit.
Notes on Discs 7 • This unit will play CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing files saved in the MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 (MP3) or Windows Media Audio (WMA) format with a sampling rate of 32*, 44.1 or 48 kHz, and JPEG format. Incompatible files will not play.
• In handling a disc, hold it carefully with edges. • Do not stick paper or write anything on the printed surface. • Fingermarks and dust on the recorded surface should be carefully wiped off with a soft cloth. Wipe straight from the inside to the outside of the disc.
Control Position and Name 9 Front Panel Rear Panel POWER button Turns on the main power supply. Disc tray Toggle for standby and on. Open/Close 5 button Press to open or close the disc tray. STANDBY indicator Lights in the standby mode. Display Play/Pause button Begins to play disc (close disc tray first if it is open).
Control Position and Name 10 Disc indicators Indicate the type of disc currently loaded. Play/Pause indicators Illuminate in play or pause mode. PROGRESSIVE indicator Illuminates when the DVD player is set to progressive mode. PBC indicator Illuminates when PBC is on for Video CD.
Control Position and Name 11 POWER ON button Toggle for Standby on. PROGRESSIVE button When component video connection is used to connect this player and TV is compatible with progressive, press to enjoy the progressive video image. RANDOM button Press to do random playback.
Preparing the Remote Controller 12 Remove the battery compartment cover by pressing the tab and lifting up the cover. Insert the two batteries (size AAA/R3). Be sure to match the + and – ends of the batteries with the diagram inside the battery compartment.
System Connections 13 To accommodate a wide range of home entertainment systems, this player features numerous connection types for both audio and video. Please refer to the instructions on this and the following pages to determine the best possible type of connections for your system.
System Connections 14 This player has 3 kinds of video output jacks. Select one of the following connections. • Video jack connection: Use the supplied audio/video Connection Cable to connect. • S-Video jack connection: For higher quality video than video jack connection.
Although you can reproduce the DVD Player’s sound from the TV speakers with the connections on pages 14, connecting with an amplifier provides you high quality dynamic sounds. To reproduce Dolby Digital surround and DTS surround sound, you need to connect to an amplifier with a Dolby Digital and DTS decoder respectively.
T urning on 16 The VD-4500 is shipped with the main power ( POWER ) switch in the on position ( ON). When the power cord is plugged in for the first time, the VD-4500 will automatically enter the standby mode and the STANDBY indicator will light (same condition after step 2 below).
Basic Playback 17 Before playing • Turn on the TV and set the TV to the DVD Player’s input. • Turn on the audio system and set it to the DVD Player’s input, if an audio system is connected to the DVD Player. • DVD-Video, Video CD, CD, MP3, WMA, JPEG can be played with the DVD Player (see “Notes on Discs” on page 6 and 8).
Basic Playback 18 ■ T o play in fast reverse ( ) or fast forward ( ) Press SEARCH during playback. Each press of the same button changes the playback speed. To resume normal playback, press PLAY . Note The DVD Player mutes sounds and omits subtitles during fast reverse and fast forward.
Basic Playback 19 The VD-4500 can play back MP3/WMA/JPEG files recorded on CD-R or CD-RW. • A certain amount of time is required for the player to confirm the media on which MP3/WMA/JPEG files have been recorded before playback will commence. ■ Playback Press PLAY For JPEG discs: Slide show starts.
Other Operations 20 The following operations can be performed directly from the remote controller. 1 Press the number buttons to select the desired title No. or track No. (Example) To select track No. 23: When playing a DVD : Select the desired title number in advance.
Other Operations 21 You can listen to the desired tracks of the current CD or VCD in any desired order. ■ Program edit 1 During stop mode, press PROGRAM. Program edit screen appears. 2 Select specific track by pressing . 3 Select “ADD” icon on the screen to register selected value onto PROGRAM LIST, then press the ENTER button.
Other Operations 22 3 Press PLAY , use ▲ / ▼ to move the cursors to the “INSERT” icon, and press ENTER. The new track will be inserted after (below) the selected column.
Other Operations 23 You can listen to the desired files of the current MP3/WMA/JPEG disc in any desired order. ■ Program edit 1 During stop mode, press PROGRAM. 2 Press to select the file, then press ENTER. • The selected file goes to program window.
Other Operations 24 The chapters or tracks of the disc are played in random order. Press RANDOM while stopped. RANDOM indicator lights up. ■ T o cancel random play Press RANDOM while stopped so that RANDOM indicator goes off. Each time you press RANDOM , random play will be on and off.
Other Operations 25 The A-B repeat function lets you mark a segment to repeat between the beginning “ A ” and the end “ B ” of the segment you want to replay. 1 Press A-B when you want to choose a scene(sound) as the beginning point. 2 Press A-B again to choose a scene (sound) as the end point.
DVD settings 26 The following operations can be performed directly from the remote controller. • Selecting a Playback Audio Setting • Changing the Subtitle Language • Changing the Camera Angle Press AUDIO on the remote controller repeatedly during playback to select the audio language.
Customizing the Function Settings 27 When component video connection is used to connect this player and TV is compatible with progressive, you can enjoy the progressive video image. 1 Press PROGRESSIVE. ■ To restore the Interlace mode, press PROGRESSIVE.

To clear the setting menu Press , then select “ EXIT SETUP ” or press SETUP . Note When a TV screen is not displayed, the “ TV type ” setting may not be suitable for your TV .
