vii Precautions • When the camcorder is not in use, remem- ber to remove the cassette tape, turn off the power , and disconnect the camcorder fr om the power source.
viii Dew Formation • What is “dew f ormation”? When cold water is poured into a glass, dew drops form on the glass. This clinging of water drops is called dew formation. • When dew f orms in your camcorder . Dew will gradually form on the head drum of your camcorder and make the video tape stick to the head.
ix Dir ty Video Heads When the video heads have become clogged with dirt (dust and tape coating particles), • mosaic-like noise appears on the playback picture. (see above illustration) • playback pictures do not move. • during playback, the whole screen becomes blue.

Preparation Preparation 9 Preparation Charging the Battery P ack Charge the battery pack with the supplied AC adapter/battery charger before use. Note: • Remove the DC cable fr om the AC adapter/ battery charger when charging the battery pack.

Preparation Preparation 11 P owering the Camcor der fr om an AC Outlet Y ou can also power the camcor der from a power outlet by using the supplied AC adapter/ battery charger and DC cable.
Preparation 12 Inserting and Removing a Cassette Inserting a Cassette 1 Attach the pow er source to the camcorder , then slide the cassette compartment door release and open the cassette compar tment door . • After confirmation sound, the cassette holder extends and opens automatically .
Preparation Preparation 13 Inserting and Removing a Card Y ou can use an SD Memory Card (commer - cially available) or a MultiMediaCard (only supplied with VL-NZ10) for storing still images. Removing a Car d Perfor m steps 1 and 2 above, push the car d ( 1 ) and pull the card straight out ( 2 ) as shown below .
Preparation 14 Installing the Lithium Batteries Installing the Memory Battery A lithium battery is used to store the memory of the date and time settings. 1 Slide the cassette compar tment door release and open the cassette compar t- ment door . Note: • The cassette holder will extend and open when the camcorder is connected to a power source.
Preparation Preparation 15 Selecting the Language f or the On-screen Displa y A vailable modes: T APE-CAMERA, CARD-CAMERA This camcorder allows you to choose English, German or French as the on-screen display language.
Preparation 16 Setting the Area, Date and Time A vailable modes: T APE-CAMERA, CARD-CAMERA Example: Setting the date to 2 June 2002 (2. 6. 2002) and the time to 10:30 am (10:30) in Paris. Notes: • Befor e per forming the steps below , make sure that the lithium battery has been installed (see page 14).
Preparation Preparation 17 Changing to the 12-hour Time Mode 1 After perf or ming step 10 above , press l or m to select “12H/24H”, then press the SET button. 2 Press l or m to select “12H”, then press the SET button. 3 Press the MENU button to turn off the menu screen.
Preparation 18 Using the Lens Cap Attach the strap of the lens cap to the hand strap or shoulder strap as shown below . When attaching or removing the lens cap, press both tabs on the top and bottom of the cap.

Basic Operations Camera Recording Basic Operations 21 Zooming A vailable modes: T APE-CAMERA, CARD-CAMERA Zooming allows you to move visually closer to or farther from a subject without physically changing your position. When using the optical zoom, you can enlarge the subject up to 10 K .
Basic Operations 22 Remaining Recording Time Displa y A vailable mode: T APE-CAMERA When the camcorder is r ecording in T APE- CAMERA mode, an on-screen indicator displays the approximate r emaining tape time in minutes. Notes: • The remaining recording time indicator appears when the OSD menu item is set to “ON”.
Basic Operations Playbac k Basic Operations 23 T ape Pla yback A vailable mode: T APE-VCR The LCD monitor screen functions as a handy playback monitor . Nothing needs to be con- nected, allowing instant on-screen playback with the sound through the built-in speaker .
Basic Operations 24 V olume Control A vailable mode: T APE-VCR When the camcorder is in T APE-VCR mode, push the V olume control to the L or + side to increase ( 1 ) or decr ease ( 2 ) the volume. The volume level indicator will appear on the LCD screen during adjustment only .

Useful Features 28 Setting the Digital Zoom A vailable modes: T APE-CAMERA, CARD-CAMERA Y ou can select thr ee different zoom ranges: 1– 10 K (optical zoom), 10–40 K (digital zoom) or 10–300 K (digital zoom). The digital zoom allows you to recor d power ful close-up pictures with the same operation as normal zooming.

Useful Features 32 Gain-up A vailable modes: T APE-CAMERA, CARD-CAMERA When you are recor ding in a dark or poorly illuminated location, “LIGHT” is displayed on the screen. Use the gain-up function to r ecord a brighter picture. Note: • At locations wher e lighting is adequate, “LIGHT” will not appear .

Useful Features 34 F ade In and Fade Out A vailable mode: T APE-CAMERA The fade function allows you to gradually bring the image and sound in or out at the beginning or end of a scene for creating scene transi- tions. This is especially effective in cr eating a dramatic change in scenery .

Useful Features 38 Self Recording A vailable modes: T APE-CAMERA, CARD-CAMERA Rotate the LCD monitor 180° vertically so that the screen faces the other way and the subject can monitor the shot while you are r ecording. If the camcorder is steadied, you can r ecord yourself in the scene by watching yourself on the LCD monitor .

Useful Features 40 Selecting the 16-bit A udio Recor ding Mode A vailable mode: T APE-CAMERA This camcorder allows you to select between 12-bit and 16-bit audio recor ding modes. The camcorder normally recor ds audio in the 12-bit audio recor ding mode.

42 Useful Features Using the Remote Control (Only supplied with VL-NZ10) A vailable modes: All modes Use the remote contr ol to operate the camcorder fr om a distance, such as when you want to record yourself in a scene, or when the camcorder is connected to a TV for use as a VCR.

46 Useful Features Gamma Playbac k A vailable mode: T APE-VCR The gamma playback function improves the playback picture in T APE-VCR mode by increasing the brightness of the subject while leaving the brighter portions of the image unaffected. During playbac k in T APE-VCR mode, press the GAMMA/BRIGHTER button once.
Useful Features Playbac k 47 Useful Features Multiple Strobe Pla yback A vailable mode: T APE-VCR The multiple strobe playback function can be used to capture the action of a fast-moving subject at intervals of 1/8 of a second using a 9- or 16-frame picture.
48 Useful Features Copying an Ima g e from T ape to Card A vailable mode: T APE-VCR Y ou can captur e your favourite image frame from a video tape r ecording and save it on card. 1 Inser t the recorded Mini D V cassette and a card in the camcorder . 2 Set the camcorder to T APE-VCR mode, then begin tape pla yback.

Adv anced Features Camera Recording Advanced Features 55 Adjusting White Balance A vailable modes: T APE-CAMERA, CARD-CAMERA The colour of the subject on the screen looks different depending on lighting conditions. Select a White Balance setting that matches the lighting conditions.
Advanced Features 56 4 Press l or m to select “MANUAL ”, then press the SET button to displa y the e xposure setting screen. 5 Press l or m to select the desired e xposure level. • The number shown is the selected exposure level. The adjustment range is from + 5 (least light) to L 5 (most light).
Adv anced Features Camera Recording Advanced Features 57 5 Press l or m to select the desired shutter speed, then press the SET button. • Y ou can select 17 speeds fr om 1/25 sec. (“25”) (slowest shutter speed) to 1/ 10,000 sec. (“10000”) (fastest shutter speed).
Advanced Features 58 Notes: • Recor ding with a shutter speed faster than 1/50 sec. tends to darken the picture. Recor d in bright locations when you use a fast shutter speed. • Using a fast shutter speed under fluor escent lighting will cause flickering in the picture and possibly periodic colour shifts.
Adv anced Features Playbac k Advanced Features 59 Using the Time Code A vailable modes: T APE-VCR, T APE-CAMERA The time code shows the hour , minute and second of recor ding, and the frame number (1 frame = approx. 1/25 sec.). This is automati- cally recor ded along with the subject when you are recor ding on the tape.
Advanced Features 60 Editing A vailable mode: T APE-VCR Video editing lets you r efine your videos by removing unwanted sequences fr om your tape, or transposing one sequence with another . This camcorder lets you monitor the sour ce program on the built-in LCD monitor without having to connect it to an external TV or video monitor .
