4 CAUTIONS Installation notes CAUTION Do not install in a location wi th moisture or dust. Risk of fire and electrical shock. 5 CAUTIONS Installation notes (continued) About consumables The machine includes a built-in hard dr ive. Do not subject the machine to shock or vibra tion. In par ticular, never move the machine while the power is on. • The machine should be installe d near an accessible power outlet for easy connection.
6 CAUTIONS Handling precautions WARNING Do not place a container of water or other liquid, or a metal object that might fall inside, on the machine. If the liquid spills or the object falls into the machine, fire or electrical shock may result. Do not remove the machine casing.
7 CAUTIONS The machine includes the document filing fu nction, which stores document image data on the machine's hard drive. Stored do cuments ca n be called up and printed or transmitted as needed. If a hard drive fai lure occurs, it will no longer be possible to call up the stored document data.

12 CHECKING THE IP ADDRESS To check the IP address of the machine, print out the all custom setting list in the system settings. 1 Press the [SYSTEM SETTINGS] key. 2 Select the all custom setting list in the touch panel. (1) Touch the [L is t Print (User)] key.

16 LOGOUT Numeric keys These are used to enter the number of copies, fax numbers, and other numbers. [LOGOUT] key ( ) When user authentication is enabled, press this key to log out after using the machine. When usi ng the fax function, this key can be pressed to send tone signals on a pulse dial line.
17 TURNING THE POWER ON AND OFF The machine ha s two power switch es. One is th e main pow er switch on the left side of the machine, and the other is the [POWER] key ( ) on the upper right side of the operation pan el. Main power switch When the main power switch is switched on, the main power indicator on the operation panel lig hts up.
18 PLACING ORIGINALS The automati c do cu me nt fee d er ca n be use d to auto ma tically scan many originals at once. This saves you the trouble of manual ly feeding each origi nal. For originals tha t cannot be scanned using the automatic document feeder, such as a book or a docu ment with notes attached, use the document glass.
19 PLACING ORIGINALS Using the document glass Take care that your finger s are not pinche d when closi ng the automatic document feede r. After placing the original, be sure to close the automatic document feeder. If left open, parts outside of the original will be co pi e d black, causing excessive use of toner.

21 CHANGING PAPER IN A TRAY Loading paper in a tray A maximum of 500 sheets of paper from size 5-1/ 2" x 8-1/2" to size 8-1/2" x 14" (A5 to A4) can be loaded in trays 1 and 2. A maximum of 500 she ets of paper from size 7 -1/4" x 10-1/2" to size 8-1/2" x 14" (B5 to A4) can be loaded in trays 3 and 4.

24 BEFORE INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE Disc 1 Software for Windows • Printer driver These allow the machine to be used as a printer. - PCL6 printer driver The machine su pports the Hewlett-Packard PCL6 prin ter control langu ages.
25 BEFORE INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE Disc 2 Software for Windows • PC-Fax driver This enables you to send a file from your computer as a fax using the same procedure as when printing the file.
26 BEFORE INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE VERIFYING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Before installing the software described in this manual, make sure that your comp uter satisfies the following requirements. *1 The PCL5c printer driver will not run on any of the 64-bit editions of the Windows operating systems, Windows Server 2008 and Window s 7.
27 BEFORE INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS The following requirements must be met to use the software describe d in th is manual. *1 For the types of computers and operating systems that can run the softw are , see "SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS" (page 26).
28 BEFORE INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE CONNECTING THE MACHINE CONNECTING TO A NETWORK To connect the machine to a network, con nect the L AN cable to the mach ine's network connector. Use a shielded LAN cable. After connecting the mach ine to a network, be sure to configure the IP address and other network settings before installing the software.
29 SETUP IN A WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT This section explains how to install the software on a Windows computer. For more details regarding installation proce dures and instructions for in stallation in Macintosh environments, see Chapter 1 of the Operation Guide.
30 SETUP IN A WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT 5 Read the message in the "Welcome" window and then click the [Next] button. 6 The software selec tion screen appears. Before installing the software, be sure to click the [Display Readme] button and view the detailed informatio n on th e software.
31 SETUP IN A WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT INSTALLING THE PRINTE R DRIVER / PC-FAX DRIVER To install the printer driver or the PC -Fax dr iver, follow the appropriate procedure in this section depending on whether th e machine is con nected to a network or co nnected by USB cable.
32 SETUP IN A WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT X Standard installation When the software selection screen ap pea rs in step 6 of "OPENING THE SOFTWARE SELECTION SCREEN (FOR ALL SOFTWARE)" (page 29), perform the steps below. 1 Click the [Printer Driver] button.
33 SETUP IN A WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT When [Custom installatio n] is selected, you can change any of the items below. When [Standard installa tion] is select ed, the installation will take place as indicate d below.
34 SETUP IN A WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT 4 A confirmation window appears. Check the contents and then click the [Next] button. 5 When the printer driver selection window appears, select the printer driver to be installed and click the [Next] button. Click the checkbox of the printer driver to be installed so that a checkmark ( ) appears.
35 SETUP IN A WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT If you clicked the [Custom installatio n] button in step 2, the followi ng windows will appear. • Printer nam e wi ndow If you wish to chang e the printer n ame, enter the desired name and click the [Next] button.
36 SETUP IN A WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT This completes the installation. • After installati on, see "CONFI GURING THE PRINTER DRIVER FOR THE OPT IONS INSTALLED ON THE MACHINE" (page 1-96 in the Operation Guide) to configure the printer driver settings.
37 REGULAR MAINTENANCE To ensure that the machine continues to pro vide top quality perf ormance, periodicall y clean the machine. Cleaning the docume nt glass and automatic document feed er If the document glass or document backplate sheet becomes dirty, the dirt will appear as dirty spots, or black or white lines in th e scanned image.
38 SUPPLIES Standard supplies for this product th at can be repla ced by the user include paper, toner cartridges, and staple cartridges for the finisher. Be sure to use only SHARP-specified products for the toner cartridges, fi nisher staple cartridge, and transparency film.
