Installation Connecting t he Handset Connect t he handset as shown and place it on the hands et rest . ♦ The ends o f the handset co rd are identica l, so they will go into either jack. Use the ha ndset to mak e ordinary phone calls , or to tra nsmit a nd receive fax e s manua lly .
Connectio ns 12 Connecting t he power cord Plug the power cord i nto a 120 V , 60 Hz, gro unded AC (3-prong) outlet . Caution! Do not plug the power cord into any other kind of outl et. This will damage the m achine and is not covere d under the warranty .
Connecti ons 13 1. Installation Connecting the tel ephone line cor d Inser t one e nd o f the l ine cord into the jack on the ba ck of the mach ine marked TEL. LINE . Insert the other end into a standard (RJ1 1C) single- line wall telepho ne jack. Note : The fax machine is set for tone dialing.

Loading th e Imagi ng Film 15 1. Installation Loading the Imaging Film Y our f ax uses a rol l of imaging film t o cre ate pri nted te xt and images. The print head in the fax applies heat to the ima ging fil m to transf er ink to the p aper . Follow the st eps below to load or r eplace the fil m.
Loading th e Imagi ng Film 16 3 T ake the new film out of its package, and inser t tw o of the g ears prov ided with the fa x i nto t he ends of th e spool with film. Make sure that the tw o tabs on the ge ars fit proper ly into t he slo ts in the e nds of the spool.

Loading P rinting Paper 19 1. Installation Loading Printing P aper The pap er tray h olds the p aper on whic h received document s and copies a re print ed. Up to 200 s heets of letter o r legal siz e paper fr om 16 t o 20 lbs. (60 to 75 g/m 2 ) can be loaded in the tray .

Sending a Fax by Automati c Dialin g 66 Err or Correct ion Mode The fa x machine i s set to a utomati cally co rrect any distortions i n a transmis sion due t o noise on t he te lephone li ne before printing at the receivi ng end. This funct ion is ca lled Erro r Correction M ode (ECM) .
67 4. Receiving Documents When the r eception mod e is set to F AX, the fax m achine will automa ticall y answer al l calls on four ri ngs and re ceive inc oming faxes .
Using FAX Mode 68 Changing the n umber of rings If desire d, you can cha nge the numbe r of ring s on which t h e fax machine answers incoming cal ls in F AX mode. Any number from 2 to 5 can be s elected. 1 Press these key s: The displ ay will sh ow: 2 Enter th e desired number of rings (any number from 2 to 5) .
