4 The machine should be installed near an accessible power outlet for easy connection and disconnection. Be sure to connect the power cord only t o a power outlet that meets the specified voltage and current requirements. Also make certain the outl et is properly grounded.

10 BEFORE USING THE MA CHINE OPERATION PANEL ON LINE key / indic ator Press to t oggle the m achine b etween onli ne and off-line . The indic ator lights up when th e machin e is onli ne, and goe s off when t he machi ne is off-line. T he indic ator blinks while the machine is receivin g print d ata and whi le printing is paused.

12 POWER ON AND OFF The pow er switch is located on the left sid e of the machi ne. POWER ON Turn the power switch to the "ON" position. It will t ake about 45 second s for the ma chine to warm up. While the machin e is war ming up, the PO WER SAVE indica tor will bl ink.
13 1 LOADING PAPER The pap er required i ndicator ( ) will ligh t up when ther e is no copy paper in the selecte d paper fee d tray, or when the sele cted p aper tray i s not in stalled o r is impr operly in stalled. PAPER For be st resu lts, use onl y SHARP recomm ended paper.
14 BEFORE USING THE MA CHINE LOADING PAPER Make s ure that th e machin e is not copy ing or pr inting, an d then foll ow these step s to load paper. Loadi ng the pa per tr ay 1 Gently li ft and pull out the paper tra y until it stops. 2 Push the pressure plate down until it locks in place.
15 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 1 Loading the bypa ss tray 1 Unfol d th e byp ass tray. When fee ding large paper s uch as 8-1/2" x 14" and 11" x 17" , pull out the by pass tray ext ensi on. 2 Set the paper guides to the copy paper width.
16 BEFORE USING THE MA CHINE Envelopes Do not us e the follo wing enve lopes, as misfeeds will occur . • Envelo pes with m etal tabs, clasps, str ings, hol es, or wind ows. • Envelo pes with rou gh fibers , carbon pa per, or glo ssy surf aces. • Envelo pes with two or more flaps.
17 BEFORE USING THE MACHINE 1 4 Press the [START] key ( ) an d then the [PAPE R SIZE EN TER] key. To change th e paper size setting of another tray , repeat ste ps 2 to 5 a fter pressing th e [START] key ( ).

19 COPY FUNCTIONS 2 Copying from th e SPF 1 Make sure that an origi nal has not been left on the document glass. Close the SPF. 2 Adjust the or iginal guides to the si ze of the original(s). 3 Set the or iginal(s ) face up in the document feeder tray.
20 COPY FUNCTIONS Removing the document cover To c opy large originals li ke news papers, re move the documen t cover. To remove the cove r, lif t straig ht up as s hown.
21 COPY FUNCTIONS 2 MAKING A COPY DARKER OR LIGHTER Automatic exposure adj ustment is initial ly enabled. This function automatical ly adjusts the copy ima ge according to the original being copie d. If you wish to sel ect the exposure le vel yourself, fol low the steps belo w.
22 COPY FUNCTIONS SETTING THE NUMBER OF COPIES Press the numeric keys to set the number of copies. ● The set n umber of copies ap pears in t he display . A maximu m of 999 copies (factory defa ult setting) can be set. ● If you wi sh to make o nly a singl e copy, co pying is possi ble with th e display sh owing " 0".
23 COPY FUNCTIONS 2 4 Pres s the [AUTO IM AGE] key. The AUTO IMAGE indica tor lights up and the appropriate r atio for the origina l size and paper size is selected. (The indicator o f the selected ratio will light up.) 5 Set the number of copies and other copy sett ings, and then press th e [START ] key ( ).
24 COPY FUNCTIONS SELECTING THE VERTI CAL AND HORIZONTAL COPY RATIOS SEPARATELY (XY ZOOM copying) The XY ZOOM feature allows the horizontal an d vertical copy ratios to be ch anged independ ently. Example: Reduction onl y in the ho rizontal dir ection.
25 COPY FUNCTIONS 2 6 Use the [PRESET RATIO] se lector keys ( , ) and [Zo om] keys ( , ) to change the copy ratio in the horizontal direction. Pres s the [PRE SET RATI O] select or keys ( , ) to s elect a rati o close to the desire d ratio, and then pre ss the [Zoom] k eys ( , ) to adjust the rati o in incremen ts of 1%.
26 TWO-SIDED COPYING USING THE BYPASS TRAY To perfor m manual two-sided cop ying, follow these ste ps. Example: Copying o riginals A and B on to each s ide of one sheet of pa per 1 Copy original A.
27 2 DUAL PAGE COPYING A dual p age orig inal can be automatic ally separ ated into two pages d uring copy ing. This feature is convenient for making copies of books and other dual page originals on individ ual sheet s of paper . 1 Place the original on the document glass, aligning the division between the pages with the s ize marker (8 1 / 2 ).
28 INTERRUPTING A COPY RUN (Interrupt copying) A copy run can be temporaril y inter rupted to all ow another copy job t o be perfo rmed. Wh en the other j ob is fi nished, the copy run will res ume using t he original copy settings . 1 Press the [INTERRUPT] key ( ) to interrupt the copy ru n.
29 3 Chapter 3 PRINTER FUNCTIONS The mac hine incl udes a USB 1.1 conn ector and a parallel c onnector as standard e quipment. A compu ter can be c onnected to these con nectors to u se the machi ne as a pri nter.
30 PRINTER FUNCTIONS Pausing a prin t job To paus e a print j ob during pr inting, p ress the [ON L INE] key on the operati on panel to switch the machi ne off-line . Printing will be pa used and the ON LINE in dicator wil l blink. To cance l a print jo b, press the [CL EAR] key ( ) or the [CLEAR A LL] key ( ).
31 4 Chapter 4 USER SETTINGS This ch apter exp lains how to set the automatic ex posure level, t oner save m ode/high i mage qual ity mode , and the user p rograms, wh ich are c ustom set tings that control fine poin ts of the m achine ’ s o peration.
32 TONER SAVE MODE AND HIGH IMAGE QUALITY MODE Toner sa ve mo de can be enab led to re duce tone r consumption by about 1 0%. The hi gh image q uality mode improve s copy im age quali ty in the a utomatic and manual exposure modes by incre asing copy density wi th a slig ht increas e of toner consump tion.

36 SETTINGS FOR AUDITING MODE AUDITING MODE When "A uditing mode " is enabled, a co unt is kept of the number of cop ies made by eac h account (up to 20 accounts can be e stablished ), and the counts can be displ ayed and t otaled as nec essary.

43 TROUBLESHOOTING 5 Copies are smudged or dirty. The document glass or the underside of th e document cover/S PF is dirty. → Clean regu larly. 58 Original smudged or blotchy. → Use a clean ori ginal. – White or black lines appear on copies. The scanner glass in the SPF is dirty.

45 TROUBLESHOOTING 5 Removing the software If you ne ed to remove the software , follow these steps. 1 Click the "sta rt" b utto n, and then c lic k "Control Panel". On Win dows 95/98 /Me/NT 4.0 /2000, cl ick the "Start " button, s elect "S ettings", a nd then click "Cont rol Panel" .

47 5 MISFEED REMOVAL When a mis feed occurs , the misfeed in dicator ( ) an d a misfeed locat ion indica tor ( ) will blink and the mach ine will aut omatical ly stop. Check th e blinking misfeed l ocation ind icator to i dentify th e location o f the misf eed and remov e it.
48 TROUBLESHOOTING Section C Remove t he misfed original f rom the exi t area. If the misf ed origin al cannot be easily remo ved from the exi t area, ope n the movea ble part of the document feeder tray and re move the origina l. 2 Open and close the SP F to make th e misfeed location indicator stop blinking.
49 TROUBLESHOOTING 5 MISFEED IN THE MACHINE 1 Open the bypass tray and the side cover. 2 Check th e misfee d location. Remov e the misfed pape r following the instructions fo r each locat ion in the illustration below. A. Misfeed in the paper feed area 1 Push gently on both ends of the front cover.
50 TROUBLESHOOTING B. Misfeed in the fusing area 1 Push gently on both ends of the front cover. 2 Turn the roller rotating knob in the direction of the arrow. 3 Careful ly remove t he misf ed paper. Lower the fusing uni t release le vers to allow easi er remova l.
51 TROUBLESHOOTING 5 C. Misfeed in the transport area 1 Open the fusing paper guide by pressing down the projection on either side of the guide and r emove the misf ed paper.
52 TROUBLESHOOTING MISFEED IN THE PAPER TRAY 1 Lift and pull out the paper tray and remov e the misf ed paper. Be carefu l not to tea r the misfed paper duri ng removal . 2 Open and close the si de cover. The mi sfeed ind icator ( ) will go out. 3 Close the paper tray.
53 5 REPLACING THE TD CARTRIDGE When the TD cartr idge repla cement r equired i ndicator ( ) lights u p, the TD cartridg e will need replacemen t soon. Obtain a new cartr idge. When the TD cartrid ge replacem ent requir ed indic ator ( ) blinks, the TD cartridg e must be repl aced before copying can be res umed.
54 TROUBLESHOOTING 6 Close the front cover. The TD cartridge replacem ent required indica tor ( ) will go out. REPLACING THE DRUM CARTRI DGE The us eful life of t he drum car tridge is approximat ely 30,00 0 copies.
55 TROUBLESHOOTING 5 5 Remove the new drum cartr idge from the protective bag and gently insert the lead end of the drum cartridge along the guides. 6 Remove the pr otect ive cover from the drum cartridge and then push the cartridge all the way into the m achine.

59 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 6 CLEANING THE BYPASS TRAY PAPER FEED ROLLER If misfe eds occur frequently when feeding envelope s, thick p aper, etc. th rough the bypass tray , wipe the pap er feed roller a t the feed slo t of the byp ass tray w ith a soft, cl ean cloth da mpened with alcohol or water.
