2 Proper storage for supplies Store the supplies (paper an d toner ca rtridges) in a location th at is: • clean and dry • at a stable temperature • not exposed to direct sunlight. Store paper in the wrapper and lying flat. • Paper stored out of the wrapper or in pack ages standing on end may curl or get damp, resulting in paper misfeeds.

7 2 Follow the ste ps below to load paper into the tray. PA P E R For best results, use only paper recommended by SHARP. * Do not use non-standard envelopes, and envel opes tha t have metal clasps, plastic snappers, string cl osures, windows, lining s, self-adhesive, patches or synthetic materials.
8 LO ADING THE P APER TRA Y 1 Raise the hand le of the paper tr ay and pull the paper tray out until it stops. 2 Adjust the paper guide s on the paper tray t o the copy paper width and length. Squeeze the lever of pape r guide and slide the guide to match wit h the width of th e paper.
9 2 4 Gently push the paper tray back in to the unit. • After loading paper, to ca ncel t he blinking without restarting copying, press the clear ( ) key. The in the display will go out and the start ( ) indicator will light up. • Be sure that paper is free of rips, dust, wrinkles, and curled or ben t edges.
10 BYP ASS FEED (inc luding special paper) The multi-bypass tray can be used to f eed standard paper, transparency film, label s, envelopes, and oth er special purpose pape r. Paper measuring from A6 to A4 and in the weight range of 56 to 128 g /m 2 can be used in th is tray.
11 2 3 Press the tray select ( ) key to select the mul ti-bypass tr ay. • Paper must be fed narrow side into the feed slot. • T r a n sp a r e n cy fi l m , lab e ls, e n vel o pes , a nd other speci a l purpose papers must be fed individu ally. • When copying onto transparency film, remove each copy promptly.
12 This chapter explains basic and other copying functions. The unit is equ ipped with a one-pa ge memory buffe r. This memory allows the unit to scan an original once only and make up to 99 copies.
13 3 CONNECTING THE PO WER CORD 1 Ensure that th e power switch of the unit is in th e OFF position . Insert the attac hed power cord into the pow er cord socket at the rear of the unit. 2 Plug the other end of t he power c ord into the ne arest outlet.
14 About the scan he ad The scan head lamp remains on constantly when the unit is in the ready condi tion (when the start ( ) ind icator is illuminated). The unit adju sts the scan head lam p periodica lly to maintain copying qua lity. At this time, the scan head moves automati cally.
15 3 ORIGINAL PLA CEMEN T Using the original table 1 Open the o riginal c over, and place the o riginal . 2 Place an orig inal face dow n on the origin al table. Align i t with the original scale and the centri ng ( ) mark. Gently close the original cover.
16 Using the SPF The SPF is designe d to hold up to 50 o riginals measuring from A5 to A4 and weighting from 56 to 90 g /m 2 . 1 Make sure th at no original is left on the origina l table. 2 Adjust the origi nal guides to t he size of originals. 3 Set the originals face up i n the original feeder tray.
17 3 SET THE COPY QU ANTITY Set the number of copies us ing the two cop y quantity ( , ) ke ys when copying from the original table or from the SPF if installed. • Press the right copy quantity key to set the unit di git from 0 to 9. This key will not change the tens dig it.
18 Automatic exposure adjustment The automatic exposure level ca n be adjusted to suit your copying n eeds. This level is set for copying from the original tab le and copying from the SPF respectively.
19 3 REDUCTION/ENLARGEMENT/ZOOM Three preset reduction ratios and two enlar gement ratios can be selected. The zoom function enables copy ratio selection from 25% to 400% in 1% increments. 1 Set the origina l and check the pape r size. 2 Use the copy ratio selector k ey and/or ZOOM ( , ) keys to select the desi red copy ratio.

21 4 BEFORE INST ALLA TION Hardware and software requirements Check the following hardware and software requi rements in order to install the so ftware. *1 Compatible with Windows 98, Wi ndows Me, Windows 2000 Professional , Windows XP or Windo ws Vista preinsta lled mo del standardly equipped with a USB port.
22 INST ALLING THE SOFTW ARE Using the machine wi th a USB connection 1 The USB cable must not be conn ected to the machine . Make sure that the cable is not connecte d before proceedi ng. If the cable is connected, a Plug and Play window will appe ar.
23 4 7 To install all of the s oftware, clic k the "Standard" button and go to step 12. To install particular pack ages, click the "Custom" button and go to next step. 8 Click the "MFP Driver " button. Click the "Display Readme" button to show informatio n on packages that are selected.
24 10 You will return to the window of ste p 8. If you wish to install Button Manager or Sh arpdesk, click the "Ut ility Software" button . If you do not wish to install the Utility Software, click the "Close" button and go to step 12.
25 4 13 Make sure that the powe r of the machi ne is turned on, and then connect th e USB cable (p. 26). Windows will detect the ma chine and a Plug and Play screen will appe ar. 14 Follow the instruct ions in the plug and play window to install the driver.
26 Connecting a USB cable Follow the procedure below to connect the machine to your computer. A USB cable for connecting the machine to your computer is not included with the machine. Please purchase the appr opriate cab le for your computer. 1 Insert the cable into the USB connector on the machine.
27 4 3 Click the "Printer Driv er" button. Click the "Display Re adme" button to show information on package s that are selected. 4 Select "Connec ted via the network" and click the "Next" button. 5 Click the "Add Network Port" button.
28 7 In the printer port sele ction window, verify the ne twork printer that is s hared and w hether the m achine is to be used as the default printe r, make the sel ections and cli ck the "Next" button. Follow the on-screen instructio ns. 8 You will return to the window of step 3.
29 4 INDICA T ORS ON THE OPERA TION P ANEL The ONLINE indicator and the start ( ) indica tor indicate the stat e of the printer or scanner. Start indicator On: Indicates the unit is ready for copying or scanning is bei ng performed. Blinking: The indica tor blinks in the follow ing situations: • When a print job is interru pted.
30 USING THE PRINTER MODE Opening the printer driver from the start menu Open the printer driver setup screen by the me thod shown below. 1 Click the "star t" button. 2 Click "Control Panel", select "Printers and Other Hardware", and then click "Printer s and Faxes".
31 4 How to print 1 Make sure that the paper of the desired size and type is loade d in the tray. The procedure for loading pap er is the same as for loading copy paper. See "LOADING PAPER" (p.7). 2 Open the document you intend to pr int, and select "Print" from the application's " File" menu.
32 USING THE SCANNER MODE Button Manager is a software program th at works with the scanner driver to enable scanning from the machine. T o scan usin g the machine, Button Manager must be linked wit h the scan menu on the machine. Follow the steps below to link Button Manager to scanner events.
33 4 Windows 98/ Me/2000 To scan directly into an applicati on using the Button Manager on Windows 98, Windows Me and Window s 2000. Set the Ev ent Ma nager properties to send only to Button Manager as shown below.
34 Scan Button Destination Setting Dia log Box After you have completed the Button Manager settings in Windows, configure the scan settings in Button Ma nager. To configure the scan settin gs in Button Manager, right cl ick the ( ) icon in the Taskbar and se lect "Setting" from the menu that appears.
35 4 Flow of the Button Manag er setting The Button Manager can d irectly handl e an AR-xxxx (where xxxx is the model name of your unit) series device event and start your selected application according to the scan setting made on the AR-xxxx (where xxxx is the model name of your unit) operation panel (SC1, SC2, SC3, SC4, SC5, SC6).
36 All About The Windows Event Manager and scan ner events in Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista Windows Platforms provide a me chanism for software to handle external events for a scanner device like the SHARP AR-xxxx (where xxxx is the model name of your unit) series products.

38 4 Press the sta rt ( ) key. Scanning will start and the scanned data will be transferred to the application. Opening the scanner driver and scanni ng from your computer Follow the steps below to op en the scanner driver setup screen. As an example, this instruction is given using Sharpd esk as an image capture application.
39 4 Using the SHARP TWAIN 1 Place the origi nal(s) you wi sh to scan on the docu ment glass/SPF. For the procedure for pl acing the or iginal, see "ORIGINAL PLACEMENT" (p.15). 2 After startin g Sharpdesk, click the "File" menu and select "Sel ect Scanner".

41 4 HO W T O USE THE ONLINE MANU AL The online manual provides detai led instructio ns for o perating the unit as a printer or scanner and a list of methods for deali ng with printing or scanner problems. To access the online manual, your comput er must have Acrobat Reader 6.
42 This chapter describes the special functions of this unit. Use these functions as needed. DESCRIPTION OF SPECIAL FUNCTIONS Toner save mode (page 42) Reduces toner consumption by approximately 10%. Power save modes (page 43 ) The unit has two power save modes of operation: prehea t mode and auto power shut-off mode.
43 5 3 To enter the to ner save mode, p ress the light ( ) key. The light and dark indicator marked "1" wi ll light up, indicating the toner save mode is selected. 4 Press the expo sure mode selector key . The PHOTO ( ) indicat or will stop bl inking and will light up steadily.
44 * Factory default settings are indicated with an asterisk (*). 5 Press the start ( ) key. The right-ha nd number in the display will be steadily lit and the entered value will be st ored. 6 Press the light ( ) key to retur n to the normal copy mode.
45 6 This chapter describes how to replace th e toner cartridge and how to clean un it. T ONER CARTRIDGE REP LA CEMENT When the toner cartridge repla cement requ ired ( ) indicator lights up, repl acement of the toner cartridge will be needed soon. Obtain a new cartridge.
46 3 Gently pull the toner c artridge out while pressing the lock release lever. 4 Remove the toner cart ridge from the bag. Grasp the ca rtridge on both sides and shake it horizontally four or fiv e times. After shaking the cartri dge, remove the t oner seal.
47 6 6 Close the front cover a nd then the side cover by pres sing the round projections ne ar the side c over open butt on. The indicator ( ) will go out and t he start ( ) indicator will light up. T ONER CARTRIDGE LIFE To find out the approximate quanti ty of toner remaining, foll ow the procedure described bel ow.
48 CLEANING THE UNIT Proper care is esse ntial in order to get cl ean, sharp copie s. Be sure to take a few minutes to regularly clean the unit. Cabinet Wipe the cabinet with a soft, clean cloth.
49 6 Transfer charger If copies start becoming streaky or blotchy, the transfer charger may be dirty. Clean the charger using the following procedure. 1 Turn the power switch off. (p.14) 2 Open the multi-byp ass, then the si de cover while pre ssing the side cover open but ton.

51 7 ST A TUS INDICA T ORS When the following indicators light up or blink on th e o peration panel or the following alphanumeric codes appear in the display, solve the problem immediately referri ng to both the table below and t he relevant page. Be sure to use only genuine SHARP parts and supplies.
52 MISFEED REMO V AL When the misfeed ( ) indicator blinks or blinks in the displ ay, the unit will stop because of a misfeed. If a misfeed occurs when using the SPF, a number may appear in the display after a minus sign. Th is indica tes the number of the original s that must be returned to the original feede r tray after a misfeed.
53 7 A: Misfeed in t he paper feed area 1 Gently remove the mis fed paper from the pa per feed area as shown in the illus tration. When the misfeed ( ) indicator blinks, and the misfed paper is not seen from the paper fe ed area, pull out the paper tr ay and remove the misfed paper.
54 2 Gently remove the misfed paper from under the fusing unit as shown in the illustrat ion. If the paper cannot be removed, proceed to "C: Misfeed in the tr ansport area". 3 Raise the fusin g unit release lever and then cl ose the side cover by pressing the round projectio ns near the side cover open button.
55 7 4 Raise the fusin g unit release lever, close the front cover an d then close the side cover by pr essing the round project ions near the side cov er open button.
56 (B) Open the original cover and rotate the roller rotating knob to remove the misfed original from the exit area. If the misfed original cannot be easily removed, proceed to (C). (C) If the original does not move easily into the exit area, remove it in the direction of the arro w while rotating the knob .
57 7 SCAN HEAD LOCKING SWITCH The scan head lo cking switch is under th e original table. If the sw itch is locked ( ), the unit will not operate. Unlock the switch ( ) as shown below. To lock the scan head locking switch, hold up the catch in illustration and turn the center knob co unter-clockwise 90 degrees until you hear a click.
58 SYSTEM CONFIGURA TION A number of options are available for the un it whi ch allow you to confi gure a system to meet your particular needs. The options include the following. SINGLE P ASS FEEDER (AR-SP9) The single pass feeder (SPF) holds up to 50 originals for automatic feeding.
59 8 IF A P APER MISFEED OCCURS IN THE MAIN UNIT WHEN USING THE SPF If a paper misfeed occurs in the main un it paper path when making copies with original(s) through the SPF, the SPF will au tomatically sto p scanning. Manually remove the misfed paper(s) in the main uni t.
60 250-SHEET P APER FEED UNIT (AR-D33) The paper feed unit provide the conven ience of increased pape r capacity for the unit and a greater choice of paper size readily avail able for copying.
