1 7 PO WER ON Turn the pow er switch on the left side of th e unit to the "O N" positi on. The start ( ) indicato r will ligh t up and o ther ind icators wh ich show t he initia l settings of the operat ion panel will also light up to indica te the re ady conditi on.
1 8 Initial settings of operation panel When the unit power is on, t he operation pane l will revert to th e initial settin gs when the time se t with the "Aut o clear time" setting (p.6 6) elapses after a j ob is finish ed, or when th e clear key is press ed twice.
2 2 9 Follow the steps below to l oad paper i nto the tra y. P APER For best re sults, use onl y paper recom mended by SHARP. *1 Do no t use non- standard e nvelopes , and env elopes th at have meta l clasp s, plasti c snappe rs, string closures , windows, l inings, s elf-adhes ive, pat ches or synthe tic mate rials.
2 10 LO AD ING THE P APER TRA Y 1 Raise the handle of the paper tray and pull the paper tray out un til it stops. 2 Adjust the paper guides on the paper tray to the copy paper width and length. Squeeze the lever of paper guide and slide the guide to match with the width of the paper.
2 11 4 Gently push the paper tray back into th e unit. • Be sure th at paper is free of rip s, dust, wrinkles, and curled or bent edge s. • Make s ure all the paper in the stack is the sam e size and t ype.
2 12 BYP ASS FEED (including special paper) The multi -bypass tray c an be used to feed stan dard paper, t ransparenc y film, labels, envelop es, and other sp ecial purpose paper. Paper mea suring f rom A6 to A4 and in the wei ght range of 56 g /m 2 to 12 8 g /m 2 can be used in this tray.
2 13 2 Set the paper guides to t he paper width. Insert the paper (print face down) all the way into the mult i-bypass tray. 3 Press the tray sele ct ( ) key to select the multi-byp ass tray . • Pape r must be fed nar row s ide in to th e fe ed slot .

3 15 HARD W AR E AND SOFTW ARE REQUIREMENTS Check the following hardware and software requirem ents in o rder to ins tall the softwar e. *1 The machin e's US B 2.0 port wi ll tran sfer data at the sp eed sp ecif ied b y the USB 2.0 (Hi- Spee d) stan dar d onl y if th e Micr osoft USB 2.
3 16 INST ALLIN G THE SOFTW ARE 1 The USB cable must not be connected to the machine. Make sure that the cable is not connected before proceedi ng. If the cable is c onnected, a Plug an d Play wind ow will appe ar. If this happen s, click the "Ca ncel" bu tton to cl ose the win dow and di sconnec t the cable .
3 17 8 Click the "MFP Driver" button. Clic k the "Dis play Re adme" bu tton to show in formation on pac kages that a re select ed. 9 Select " Connected to this computer" and click t he "Nex t" button. Follow the on-s creen instruc tions.
3 18 Installing th e Utility Softwa re 11 Click the "Button Manager" or the "Sharpdesk" button. Clic k the "Dis play Re adme" bu tton to show in formation on pac kages that a re select ed. Follow the on-s creen instruc tions.
3 19 14 Follow the instructions in the plug and play window to install the d riv er. When th e "Found New H ardware Wiza rd" appea rs, selec t "Instal l the softw are autom atically (R ecommend ed)", cli ck the " Next" but ton, and f ollow the on -sc reen i nst ruct ion s.
3 20 Using the ma chine as a shared printer If the machine w ill be us ed as a s hared prin ter on a net work, follow the se steps to install the printer driver in the cli ent compute r. 1 Perform steps 2 th rough 6 in "INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE" (p.
3 21 5 Select th e printe r name ( configured as a sh ared prin ter). 1 Select the prin ter name (conf igured as a shared pr inter on a prin t server) from the list.
3 22 CONFIGURING THE PRINTER DRIVER Aft er ins tall ing t he MFP driv er, yo u mu st conf ig ure th e pri nte r dri ver se ttin gs appropria tely for the size of paper l oaded in each. 1 Click the "St art" button, click " Control Panel", a nd then click "Printer" .
3 23 SETTING UP B UTT ON MANA GER Button Ma nager is a software program th at works w ith the sca nner drive r to enable scannin g from the ma chine. To scan using the machin e, Button Ma nager mus t be link ed with the scan menu on the mach ine. Foll ow the s teps belo w to link Bu tton Mana ger to sc anner even ts.
3 24 Windows 2000 1 Click the "Start" button, select "S ettings", and then click "Control Panel". 2 Double-click the "Scanner s and Cameras" icon. 3 Select " SHARP AL-xx xx" and click the "Prop erties" button.
4 4 25 This ch apter expl ains bas ic and ot her copyi ng functi ons. The unit is equipped wi th a one-page m emory b uffer. This memory a llows the unit to scan an original once only and make u p to 99 copies .
4 26 About interrupt copying If you pre ss the st art ( ) key to beg in a copy job wh ile a print job u s ing t he paper tray or mul ti-bypass tra y is in prog ress, the copy job will be gin automatical ly after the print data in the un it's memory i s print ed (interrup t copyin g).
4 27 Setting a large original (AL-2021) The ori ginal co ver ca n be remo ved to allow c opying o f bulky obj ects. 1 Simply lift the original cov er straight up.
4 28 SET THE COPY QU ANTITY Set the num ber of copi es using the two c opy quanti ty ( , ) keys when copyin g from the d ocument gla s s or co pying from SPF. • Press th e right cop y quant ity ke y to set the uni t digit from 0 to 9. This k ey will not chan ge the tens digit.
4 29 Automat ic exposure adjust ment The autom ati c ex posu re level ca n be adju sted to suit yo ur c opyin g ne eds. Th is level is set f or copyi ng from th e docum ent gla ss and copying from the S PF res pectivel y.
4 30 REDUCTION/ENLARGEMENT/ZOOM Three pr eset reduc tion ratios and two enl argement ratio s can be se lected. The zoom function enables copy ratio sele ction from 25% to 4 00% in 1% increm ents. (Wh en the SPF is being use d, the zo om copy ratio range is 50 % to 200%.
4 31 TWO SI DED COPYING (AL-2041 only) Two-sid ed copie s of one-side d originals onl y are pos sible. Au tomatic two -sided cop ying ca n als o be pe rfor med with out us ing th e SPF . Wh en copy ing f rom one-s ided original s to two-s ided co pies, copyi ng orienta tion can be selected bet ween Turn on Long Edge and Turn o n Short Edge.
4 32 Making tw o-sided copies 1 Place the o riginal( s) on th e docume nt glass or in the S PF. (see "ORIGINAL PLACEMENT" (p.26 ). 2 Select two-side d copy mode.
4 33 SOR T COPY Copies of multi ple origin al pages can be s orted into sets. Using the d ocument glass 1 Place the f irst original. ( p.26) 2 Select th e Two- sided copy /Sort key to selec t the so rt mode. 3 Set the number of copies and oth er settings, and then press the start ( ) key .
4 34 Using the SPF (AL-2041) 1 Place the o riginals . (p.27) Sort mo de is n ormally the default output mode, a nd thus the SPF a nd Sort indica tors ligh t up. 2 Press the Two-side d copy/S ort key t o select t he sort mode. 3 Set the number of copies and oth er settings, and then press the start ( ) key .
4 35 If the memo ry becomes full • If the me mor y become s full w hile scann ing the originals , "FUL" wil l appear i n the displa y , and the machi ne will stop cop ying. • T o cop y the originals th at hav e been scanned up to that point, press the start ( ) key .
4 36 ID CARD COPY You can c opy the f ront and rev erse sides of ID ca rd onto a p age through this function . The ID card print ima ge is sh own as foll ows.

5 39 Opening the printer driver from the "Start" button You can o pen the pri nter drive r and chan ge the prin ter driver set tings from the Windows "St art" button. Se ttings adjusted in this way will be the initia l settings when you prin t from an app lication.
5 40 PRINTER DRIVER SETTING SCREEN Some rest rictions exist on the combina tions of sett ings that can be s elected i n the printer dri ver setup screen. W hen a rest riction is in effec t, an inform ation icon ( ) will app ear next to the set ting. Click the icon to view an explanat ion of the restric tion.
5 41 SETTING AD V ANCED PRIN T FUNCTIONS This se ction exp lains major ad vanced p rint fun ctions. The expl anations assume that the pa per size and oth er basic settin gs have already been sel ected. Fo r the basic procedu re for printi ng and the steps fo r opening the printer drive r, see "BASIC PRINTING" (p.
5 42 1 Click the "Main" tab in the printer driver setup screen . 2 Select the number of pages per sheet. If y ou wish to print border lines, check t he "Border" box .
5 43 4 Select the actual size of paper to be used for printing (B5 or Invoice). The size of the pr inted image w ill be automa tically adjusted to matc h the pap er loade d in the m achi ne.
5 44 Enlarging/reducing the print image (Zoom) This func tion is used to en large or re duce the i mage to a selecte d percentage. This allows you to enlarge a small i mage or a dd margi ns to the paper by slightly reducin g an image . 1 Click the "P aper" t ab in the printer driver s etup scr een.
5 45 Printing faint text and line s in black (Text To Black/Vector To Black) When pr inting a colour im age, colo ur text an d lines th at are fain t can be p rinted in black. ( R aster da ta such as bitmap images cannot be adjuste d.) This al lows you to bring out colour text and lines that are fai nt and di fficult to see.
5 46 Adjusting the brightness a nd contrast of the image (Image Adjustment) The brigh tness and contrast can be ad justed in the pr int settin gs when pri nting a photo or o ther image . These s ettings can be used for sim ple correctio ns when y ou do not ha ve image editi ng softw are instal led on yo ur comput er.
5 47 Adding a watermark to printed pages (Watermark) Faint sha dow-like text can be a dded to the background of t he printed image as a waterma rk. The si ze, dens ity, and a ngle of th e waterm ark text can be adjus ted. The text can be selec ted from a pre -stored list, or entered t o create an original watermark.
5 48 Two-sided printi ng (AL-2041 only) The mac hine can print on bo th sides of the paper. T h is func tion is us eful for m any purposes , and is partic ularly conven ient when y ou want to create a sim ple pamph let. Two-sided printing also he lps conserv e paper.
5 49 SA VING FREQUENTL Y USED PRINT SETTINGS Settings c onfigured on each of the t abs at the time of pr inting ca n be saved as user settings . Saving f requently us ed setting s or comple x colour settin gs under an assigne d name make s it easy to sel ect those se ttings the next time yo u need to use them.
5 50 OUTLINE OF THE PRINT ST A TUS WINDO W When pr inting be gins, the Prin t Status Window automatical ly opens. The Print Sta tus Windo w is a util ity that m onitors t he machine and shows the na me of the doc ument be ing printe d and any erro r messages that oc cur.

SCANNING O VER VIEW The flow chart sh own below pro v ides an overvie w of scann ing. *1 To scan using the mach ine's operatio n panel, y ou must first inst all Button Manager and esta blish th e appropri ate settings in the Control Pan el.
6 53 SCANNING USING TH E KEYS ON THE MA CHINE When sc anning is performed by this me thod, the applic ation that has been set in Button Manager wil l automa tically start and th e scann ed image will be pas ted into the appli c ation.
6 54 4 Press the start ( ) key. Scannin g will sta rt and the scann ed data wil l be transf erred to the applic ation. • If the followi ng screen appears, se lect Button Manager a nd click " OK". Button Manager starts and the ap plication associ ated with Button Manager starts.

6 56 Outline of Button Manager Button Mana ger is a soft ware uti lity that allows you t o use the scanne r function at the machine. B utton Man ager all ows you t o configu re six se ts of scanni ng setti ngs as a scan menu o n the machine.
6 57 SCANNING FR OM Y OUR COMPUTER The mach ine supports the T WAIN standard, ma king it po ssible to scan f rom TWAIN- com plia nt a ppl ica tio ns. The mac hin e a lso s upp ort s WI A (Win dows Im age Acquisi tion), mak ing it pos sible to scan from WIA-comp liant app lications and the "Scanner and Camera Wizard" in Wi ndows XP.
6 58 5 In the "S canning S ource" me nu, sel ect the loc ation whe re you placed the original in Step 1. If you p laced a one- sided ori ginal in the SPF , select "SPF" . 6 Click the "Preview" but ton. The preview im age will a ppear.
6 59 Scanner driver settings The scanner driv er setup sc reen con sists of the "Se t-up scr een", whi ch let s you select scan setti ngs, and t he "Previ ew screen" , whic h shows th e scanned image. For detai ls on the scan setti ngs, click the "Hel p" butto n in the preview screen to displa y Help.
6 60 Preview screen Click the "Preview" button in the Set-up screen to display the scanned image. Y ou can specify the scanning area by dragging the mouse inside the window . The inside of t he frame that is created when you drag the mouse will be the scanning area.
6 61 Scanning from a WIA-co mpliant application (Windows XP/Vista/7) If you are using Wi ndows XP/Vis ta/7, you can use the W IA driver to scan from WIA- comp liant applic ations. 1 Place the original that yo u wis h to sca n on th e docume nt glass/ SPF.
6 62 Scanning from the "Scanne r a nd Camera Wizard" (Windows XP) The proce dure for sc anning wi th the "Sca nner and Camer a Wizard" in Windows XP is expl ained here . The "S canner an d Camera Wi zard" lets you sc an an image without using a WIA-compliant application.
6 63 6 When scanning ends, the following screen will appear . Select the next t ask that you wi sh to perf orm, and t hen click the "Next" butto n. If you a re ready to end th e session, cl ick "Nothing . I'm fin ished working with these pictu res ".

7 68 CHECKING THE T ON ER LEVEL The toner level is indic ated by a 6-l evel dis play. Use it as a gu ideline for replaci ng the toner c artridge. 1 Hold down the light ( ) key until the alarm indicators ( , , ) blink. The display will show "- -".
8 8 69 This c hapter de scribes how to re place th e TD cart ridge and drum c artridge and how to clean the unit. TD CARTRIDGE REPLA CEMENT The TD c a rtrid ge replace ment requ ired ( ) indi cator w ill light u p when toner is needed .
8 70 4 Close the f ront cover and then the sid e cover by pr essing t he round projections n ear the side cover open b utton. The indicator ( ) will go out and the start ( ) indicator will light up. DRUM CAR TRIDGE REPLA CEMENT The us eful life of the drum c artridge is ap proxim ately 18 ,000 co pies*.
8 71 4 Gently inst all the T D cartrid ge. To install the TD cart ridge, see step 5 in "INSTALLING THE TD CARTRIDGE" in the Start Guide. 5 Close the fr ont cover an d then the side cover by p ressing the round projections near the side cover open button .
8 72 Transf er charge r If copies start becom ing strea ky or blo tchy, the transfer c harger may be dirty. Clean the charg er using t he follow ing proc edure. 1 Tu rn the p ower swit ch of f. (p .8) 2 Ensure that the multi-bypas s tray is open and then open the side cover while pr essing the side c over op en button.
8 73 MO VIN G AND ST ORING THE UNIT Moving instructions When mov ing the u nit, follow the proced ure below. 1 Turn the p ower swit ch of f and remov e the p ower cord f rom t he outl et. 2 Open the side cover and front cover, i n that or der. Remove the TD cartridge and close the front cover and side cover , in that ord er.

MA CHINE/COPYING PROBLEMS If any problem occurs, ch eck the list below before cont acting your authoris ed servic e represent ative.
9 75 Images rub off the cop y easily . Is the paper too heavy? Use paper within the spec ified range. 9 The fusing temperature is not appropriate. In the user programs, set "Fusing temperature setting when the bypass tray is used" (program 29) to "2 (High)".
9 76 PRINTING AND SCANNING PROBLEMS In additi on to this secti on, troubl eshooting informati on can a lso be fou nd in the README files for each of the software p rograms. To v iew a README fil e, see "INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE" (p.16). Pr oblem Cause and solution Page The machine does not print.
9 77 Printi ng is slo w. Simultaneous use of t wo or more application so ftware program s. → Star t printing after quitting all unused application software programs. – The pr int ed im age is l ight and uneven. The paper is loaded so that printing takes place on the rear side of the p aper .
9 78 Any one of the alarm indicators ( ,, ) is lit or bli nk ing. See "ST A TUS I NDICA TORS" to check the meaning o f the alarm indicator , and take appropriate action. 82 P oor scanning qual ity . The document glass or th e underside of the document cover/SPF is dirty .
9 79 Unable to scan the imag e . If scanning is not possible, shut down y our computer , turn o f f th e machin e's power s witch, and unplug the machine's power cord. Next, start your computer , restore power to the machine, and try sc anning again.
9 80 PROBLEMS DURING SETUP OF THE SOFT W ARE If the s oftware do es not insta ll correc tly, ch eck the following items on your compu ter. To remov e the softwa re, see "R emoving t he soft ware" (p.81). Pr oblem P ossible cause Soluti on Pa g e The software cannot be installed.
9 81 MFP driver cannot be in stal led (Windows 2000/XP) If the MFP driver can not be installe d in Windows 200 0/XP, follow these step s to check your compu ter' s set tings . 1 Click the "start" button and the n click "Control Panel".

9 83 MISF EED REM O V AL When t he misfe ed ( ) indicat or blinks or blinks in the di splay, the unit will stop because of a misfeed. Wh en the SPF m isfeeds an origina l sheet, t he unit w ill stop and the SPF mis feed ( ) ind icator will blink, w hile the misfeed ( ) indicator will remain off.
9 84 A: Misf eed in the pa per feed area 1 Gently re move the mi sfed paper from the p aper fee d area as shown in the illustration. W hen the misfeed ( ) indicator blinks, and the misfed paper is not se en from the paper feed area, pull out the paper tray and remove the misfed paper.
9 85 B: Misf eed in the fu sing area 1 Lower th e fusing u nit releas e lever. 2 Gently re move the misf ed paper from under the fusin g unit as shown in the illustration. If t he paper cannot be removed, proceed to "C: Misf eed in the transpor t area".

9 87 D: Misf eed in the S PF (AL-204 1) An original misfeed may occur at one of three locations: if the misfed original is seen from the document feeder tray, (A) in the document feeder tray; if t he misfed original is not seen from the docume nt feeder tray, (B ) in the exit area or (C) under the document feeder cover.
9 88 IF A P APER MISFEED OC CURS IN THE MAIN UNIT WHILE USING THE SPF (AL-2041) If a paper misfeed occurs in the m ain unit p aper path when maki ng copie s with original (s) through the SPF, the SPF wil l automatica lly stop scannin g. Manually remove t he misfe d paper(s) i n the main u nit.

An important point after buying a device Sharp AL2041 (or even before the purchase) is to read its user manual. We should do this for several simple reasons:
If you have not bought Sharp AL2041 yet, this is a good time to familiarize yourself with the basic data on the product. First of all view first pages of the manual, you can find above. You should find there the most important technical data Sharp AL2041 - thus you can check whether the hardware meets your expectations. When delving into next pages of the user manual, Sharp AL2041 you will learn all the available features of the product, as well as information on its operation. The information that you get Sharp AL2041 will certainly help you make a decision on the purchase.
If you already are a holder of Sharp AL2041, but have not read the manual yet, you should do it for the reasons described above. You will learn then if you properly used the available features, and whether you have not made any mistakes, which can shorten the lifetime Sharp AL2041.
However, one of the most important roles played by the user manual is to help in solving problems with Sharp AL2041.
