7 2 Follow the installation procedure be low to use the unit properly. SETUP PR OCEDURE When using the unit for the first time, setu p the unit fol lowing the procedure shown below.
8 CHECKING P A CKED COMPONENTS AND AC C E S S O R I E S Open the carton and check if the following components an d accessories are included. If anything is no t included or is dama ged, contact yo ur authorised service representative.
9 2 2 Remove all piec es of tape show n in the illustration below. Then open the docume nt glass/SPF and remove protec tive material s. After that, take out the bag containing the TD ca rtridge. 3 Release the scan head locking sw itch. The scan head locking switch is under the document glass.
10 INST ALLING THE TD CARTRIDGE 1 Open the multi-bypa ss tray, and then open the side cover. 2 Push gently on bot h sides of the front cover to open the cover. 3 Remove the TD cartridg e from the bag. Remove the prot ective paper. Hold the cartridge on both sides and sha ke it horizontally four or five time s.
11 2 5 Close the front cover and then the side cover by pressing the round projections near the side cover open but ton. When closing the cov ers, be sure to close the front cover securely and then close the side cov er . If the cov ers are closed in the w rong order , the cov ers ma y be damaged.
12 CONNECTING THE PO WER CORD 1 Ensure that th e power switch of the unit is in th e OFF position. Insert the attac hed power cord into the pow er cord socket at the rear of the unit. 2 Plug the other end of the power cord into the nearest ou tlet. POWER ON Ensure that the power switch of the unit is in the OFF position.
13 2 About the scan he ad The scan head la mp remains on constantly when the unit is in the ready condi tion (when the start ( ) indicator is illumin ated). The unit adju sts the scan head lamp peri odically to main tain copying qu ality. At this time, the scan head moves automati cally.
14 Follow the ste ps below to load pape r into the tray. PA P E R For best results, use only paper recommended by SHARP. *1 Do not use non-standard envelopes, and envelopes that have metal cl asps, plastic snappers, string closu res, windows, linings, self-adhesive, patche s or synthetic materials.
15 3 LO ADING THE P APER TRA Y 1 Raise the hand le of the paper tray and pull the paper tray out until it stops. 2 Remove the pressu re plate lock. Rotat e the pressure plate lock in the direction of the arrow to remove it whil e pressing down the pressure pl ate of the paper tray .
16 5 Fan the paper and in sert it into th e tray. Make sure the edges go under the corner hooks. 6 Gently push the paper tray back in to the unit. Do not load pa per abov e the maximum height line ( ). Exceeding the line will cause a paper misfeed. • Be sure that paper is free of rips, dust, wrinkles, and cur led or bent edges.
17 3 BYP ASS FEED (inc luding special paper) The multi-bypass tray can be used to f eed standard paper, transparency film, labels, envelopes, and o ther special purpose pape r. Paper measuring from A6 to A4 and in the weight range of 56 g /m 2 to 128 g /m 2 can be used in this tray.
18 2 Set the paper guides to the paper width. Insert the paper (pr int face do wn) all th e way into the multi- bypass t ray. 3 Press the tray select ( ) key to sele ct the multi-bypass tray.

20 BEFORE INST ALLA TION Hardware and software requirements Check the following hardware and software requirements in order to install the software. *1 Compatible with Windows 98, Wi ndows Me, Windows 2000 Professional , Windows XP or Windo ws Vista preinsta lled mo del standardly equipped with a USB port.
21 4 INST ALLING THE SOFTW ARE Using the machine wi th a USB connection 1 The USB cable must not be conn ected to the machine. Ma ke sure that the cable is not connected bef ore proceeding. If the cable is connected, a Plug and Play window will appe ar.
22 7 To instal l all of th e software , click the "Standard" button and go to step 12. To install particular packages, click the "Custo m" bu tton and go to next step. 8 Click the "MFP Driver " button. Click the "Display Re adme" button to show in formation on packages that are selected.
23 4 9 Select "C onnected t o this computer" and click t he "Next" butt on. Follow the on-screen instructions. When "The installatio n of the SHARP software is complete." appears, click the "OK" button and go to step 12.
24 12 When installi ng is finished, cl ick the "Close" butto n. A message will appear instructing you to connect the machine to your computer. Click the "OK" button. 13 Make sure that the power of the machine is turned on , and then connect th e USB cable (p.
25 4 Connecting a USB cable Follow the procedure below to connect the machine to your computer. A USB cable for connecting the machine to your computer is not included with the machine. Please purchase the appr opriate cab le for your computer. 1 Insert the cable into the USB connector on the machine.
26 5 Double-clic k the "setup" icon ( ). On Windows Vista, if a message screen appears asking you for confirmation, click "Allow". 6 The "SOFTWARE LICENSE" window will appear. Make sure that you underst and the contents of th e software license , and then click the "Yes" bu tton.
27 4 10 Enter the IP address, s ubnet mask, and default gate way. The settings in the above window are examples. Be sure to ask your network administrator for the correct IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway to be entered. 11 Click the "Next" but ton.
28 9 Read the message in the "Welco me" window and th en click the "Next" butt on. 10 Select "LPR Direct Print" and click the "Next " button. 11 The printer or printers connected to the network wil l be detected.
29 4 14 Select the port you want to use with the machine, and clic k the "Next" butt on. 15 Select whether or not you wish the printer to be your default printer and click t he "Next" button. Follow the on-screen instructio ns. 16 When "The instal lation of the SHARP softwa re is complete.
30 3 Click the "Printer Driv er" button. Click the "Display Re adme" button to show information on p ackages that are selected. 4 Select "Connec ted via the network" and click the "Next" button. 5 Click the "Add Network Port" button.
31 4 7 In the printer port sele ction window, verify the network pr inter that is s hared and w hether the m achine is to be used a s the default printe r, make the selecti ons and click the "Next" but ton. Follow the on-screen instructio ns.
32 3 Select "Sh ared Printer " and click the "Next" butt on. 4 For the port to be use d, select the machine set a s a shared p rinter, and click the "Next" button.
33 4 INDICA T ORS ON THE OPERA TION P ANEL The ONLINE indicator and the start ( ) indica tor indicate the state of the printer or scanner. Start indicator On: Indicates the unit is ready for copying or scanning is bei ng performed. Blinking: The indica tor blinks in the follow ing situations: • When a print job is inte rrupted.
34 USING THE PRINTER MODE Opening the printer driver from the start menu Open the printer driver setup screen by the me thod shown below. 1 Click the "star t" button. 2 Click "Control Panel", select "Printers and Other Hardware", and then click "Printer s and Faxes".
35 4 How to print 1 Make sure that the paper of the desired size and type is loaded in the tray. The procedure for loading paper is the same as for loading copy paper. See "LOADING PAPER" (p.14). 2 Open the document you intend to print , and select "Print" from the application's " File" menu.
36 USING THE SCANNER MODE Button Manager is a software program th at works with the scanner driver to enable scanning from the machine. To scan using the machine, Button Manager must be linked wit h the scan menu on the mach ine. Follow the steps below to link Button Manager to scanner events.
37 4 Windows 98/ Me/2000 To scan directly into an application usin g the Button Manager on Windows 98, Windows Me and Window s 2000. Set the Event Manager properties to send onl y to Button Manager as shown below.
38 Scan Button Destination Setting Dia log Box After you have completed the Button Manager settings in Windows, configure the scan settings in Button Ma nager. To configure the scan settin gs in Button Manager, right click the ( ) icon in the Taskbar and select "Setting" fro m the menu that appears.
39 4 Flow of the Button Manag er setting The Button Manager can directly handle a n AL-xxxx (where xxxx is the model name of your unit) series device event and start your selected application according to the scan setting made on the AL-xxxx (where x xxx is the model name of your unit) operation panel (SC1, SC2, SC3, SC4, SC5, SC6).
40 All About The Windows Event Manager and scan ner events in Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista Windows Platforms provide a me chanism for software to handle external events for a scanner device like the SHARP AL-xxxx (where xxxx is the model name of your unit) series products.
41 4 Using the SCAN key to begin scanning 1 Press the SCAN ( ) key. The unit enters scan mode . 2 Place the or iginal you w ish to scan on the document gl ass/SPF. For the procedure for placing the or iginal, see "ORIGINAL PLACEMENT" (p.47).
42 4 Press the sta rt ( ) key. Scanning will start and the scanned data will be transferred to the application. Opening the scanner driver and scanni ng from your computer Follow the steps below to op en the scanner driver setup scre en. As an example, this instruction is given using Sharpd esk as an image capture application.
43 4 Using the SHARP TWAIN 1 Place the origi nal(s) you wish t o scan on the document glass/SPF. For the procedure for placing the or iginal, see "ORIGINAL PLACEMENT" (p.47). 2 After startin g Sharpdesk, click the "Fi le" menu and select "Sel ect Scanner".
44 Scanning with the "Scanner and Ca mera Wizard" in Windows XP Windows XP include s as a standard featur e an image scanning fun ction. The procedure for scanning with the "Scanner and Camera Wizard" is explain ed here. 1 Place the or iginal you w ish to scan on the document gl ass/SPF.
45 4 HO W T O USE THE ONLINE MANU AL The online manual provides detai led instructio ns for operating the unit as a printer or scanner and a list of methods for deali ng with printing or scanner problems. To access the online manual, your comput er must have Acrobat Rea der 6.
46 This chapter explains basic and other copying functions. The unit is equ ipped with a one-pa ge memory buffer. This memory allows the unit to scan an original once only and make up to 99 copies.
47 5 About interrupt copying If you press the start ( ) key to begin a copy job whil e a print job using the paper tray or multi-bypass tray is in progress, th e copy job will begin au tomatically a fter the print data in the unit's memory is printed (interrupt copying).
48 Using the SPF (AL-2040) The SPF is designed to hold up to 50 origin als measuring from A5 to A4 and weighting from 56 g /m 2 to 90 g /m 2 . 1 Make sure th at no original is left on the doc ument glass . 2 Adjust the origi nal guides to the size of originals.
49 5 SET THE COPY QU ANTITY Set the number of copies us ing the two cop y quantity ( , ) keys when copy ing from the document glass or copying from SPF. • Press the right copy quantity k ey to set the unit digit from 0 to 9. This key will not change the tens digit.
50 Automatic exposure adjustment The automatic exposure level can be adjusted to suit your copying needs. This level is set for copying from the document glass and copying from the SPF respectiv ely.
51 5 REDUCTION/ENLARGEMENT/ZOOM Three preset reduction ratios and two enlar gement ratios can be sele cted. The zoom function enables copy ratio selectio n from 25% to 400% in 1% increments. (When the SPF is being used, the zoom copy ratio range is 50% to 200%.
52 This chapter describes the special functi ons of this unit. Use these functions as needed. TW O SIDED COPYING When copying from the SPF, two-side or igin als can be copied automatically without having to manually turn them over. Automatic two-si ded copying can also be performed without using the SPF.
53 6 Making tw o-sided copies 1 Place the origi nal(s) on the document gl ass or in the SPF. (see "ORIGINAL PLACEMENT" (p.47). 2 Select t wo-side d copy m ode. When copying i n a one-sided to two- sided mode: Use the original to copy key to se lect the desired one-side d to two-sided copying mode (Turn on Long Edge or Turn on Short Edge).
54 DESCRIPTION OF O THER SPECIAL FUNCTIONS Toner save mode Reduces toner consumption by approximately 10%. Power save modes The unit has two power save modes of operation: prehea t mode and auto power shut-off mode.
55 6 3 To enter the to ner save mode, p ress the light ( ) key. The light and dark indicator marked "1" wi ll light up, indicating the toner save mode is selected. 4 Press the exposure mode selector key. The PHOTO ( ) indicator will stop blinking and light up steadily.
56 * Factory default settings are indicated with an asterisk (*). 5 Press the start ( ) key. Th e right-hand number in t he display will be steadily lit and the entered value will be store d. 6 Press the light ( ) key to return to the norma l copy mode.
7 57 This chapter describes how to replace th e TD cartridge and drum cartridge and how to clean the unit. TD CAR TRIDGE REPLA CEMENT The TD cartridge replacement required ( ) indicator will light up when tone r is needed. 60 CLEANING THE UNIT Proper care is esse ntial in order to get cl ean, sharp copie s. Be sure to take a few minutes to regularly clean th e unit. Cabinet Wipe the cabinet with a soft, clean cloth. Document glass and the b ack side of the SPF Stains on the document glass, SPF scanning win dow or SPF roller will also be copied.
61 7 Transfer charger If copies start becoming streaky or blotchy, the transfer charger may be dirty. Clean the charger using the following procedure. 1 Turn the power switch off. (p.13) 2 Ensure that th e multi-bypass tr ay is open and then open the side cover while pressing the side cover op en button.

63 8 ST A TUS INDICA T ORS When the followin g indicators light up or blink on the o peration panel or the following alphanumeric codes a ppear in the d isplay, solve the problem immediately referring to both the table below and the releva nt page. Be sure to use onl y genuine SHARP par ts and supplies.
64 MISFEED REMO V AL When the misfeed ( ) indicator blinks or blin ks in the display, th e unit will stop because of a misfeed. If a misfeed occurs when using the SPF, a number may appear in the display after a minus sign. Th is indicates the number of the original s that must be returned to the original fe eder tray after a misfeed.
65 8 A: Misfeed in t he paper feed area 1 Gently remove the mis fed paper from the paper feed area as shown in the illus tration. When the mi sfeed ( ) indicat or blinks, and the misfed paper is not seen from the paper feed area, pull out the paper tr ay and remove the mi sfed paper.
66 B: Misfeed in the fusing area 1 Lower th e fusing un it release lever. 2 Gently remove the misfed paper from under the fusing unit as shown in the illustrat ion. If the paper cannot be removed, proceed to "C: Misfeed in the tr ansport area".

69 8 IF A P APER MISFEED OCCURS IN THE MAIN UNIT WHEN USING THE SPF (AL-2040) If a paper misfeed occurs in the main unit paper path when making copies with original(s) through the SPF, the SPF will au tomatically sto p scanning. Manually remove the misfed paper(s) in the ma in uni t.
