7 2 Foll ow th e inst all ation proc edure below to us e the u nit pr oper ly. SETUP PROCEDURE When usi ng the unit for the first t ime, setup t he unit followi ng the pro cedure shown below. * If you are only using the unit f or copyin g, skip t his step.
8 CHECKING PACKED COMPONENTS AN D ACCESSORIES Open the carton and che c k if the follow ing com ponents and accessori es are include d. If anythi ng is not inclu ded or is dam aged, co ntact our Techni cal Assistanc e Department at 1-(630)378-3590 in the USA or 905 -568-7140 i n Canad a.
9 2 2 Remove all pieces of tape shown in the illustration below. T hen open the SP F and remo ve protect ive materials . After that , take out the bag containing th e TD cartridge. 3 Release the scan head locking sw itch. The scan hea d locking switc h is under th e docume nt glass.
10 INSTALLING THE TD CARTRIDGE 1 Open the multi-bypass tray, and then open the s ide cover. 2 Remove the CA UTION tape from the fr ont cover and remov e the two protective pins from the fus ing unit by pulling the strings upward one at a time. 3 Push gently on both s ides of th e front co ver to ope n the cove r.
11 2 5 Gently insert t he TD cartridge until it locks in place while pushing the lock release button. 6 Close the fro nt cover and t hen the side cover by press ing the round projections nea r the side cover open but ton. When closing the covers, be sure to clo s e the front cover securel y and the n close the side c over.
12 POWER ON Ensure that th e power switch of the u nit is in the OFF posi tion. Plug the other end of the power c o rd int o the neare s t out let. Turn the power s witch on th e left side of th e unit to th e "ON" position .
13 2 Initial settings of operation panel When the unit power is o n, the ope ration panel wi ll revert to the in itial settings when the time set with the "Au to cle ar time" settin g (p.55) ela pses after a cop y or scanner job is fi nished, or when the clear ( ) key is pressed twice.
14 Follow the steps below t o load pa per into the tray. PAPER For best re sults, use onl y paper recommend ed by SHARP. * Do not use non-stand ard envelop es, and envelopes that h ave met al clasps, p lastic snappers , strin g closu res, window s, lini ngs, self-adhes ive, patches o r syntheti c material s.
15 3 LOADING TH E PAPER TRAY 1 Raise the handle of the paper tray and pull the paper tray out un til it stops. 2 Remove the pressure p late lock. Rotate th e pressure p late lock in the direction of the arrow to remove it while press ing down the pres sure plat e of the pap er tray.
16 5 Fan the paper and insert it into the tray. Make sure the edges go under the corner hooks. 6 Gently push the paper tray back into th e unit. Do not l oad pape r above the max imum height line ( ).
17 3 BYPASS FEED (including speci al paper) The multi -bypass tray c an be u sed to feed s tandar d paper, t ransparenc y film, label s, envelop es, and other special purpose p aper. Paper measu ring from 3 -1/2" x 5-1/2" to 8-1/2" x 14" and in the w eight range of 14 lbs.
18 2 Set the paper guides to t he paper width. Insert the paper (print face down) all the way into the multi- bypass tray. 3 Press the tray sele ct ( ) key to sele ct the multi- bypass tray .
19 4 This ch apter explains h ow to in stall the software that a llows the AL -1641CS to be used as a printer an d scanner, and the p rocedures for us ing the prin ter and scanner function s. 21 4 Flow of installation Refer to the follow ing tabl e and then begin installation. INSTALLING THE SOF TWARE The follo wing term is use d in this section.
22 3 Double-clic k the "setu p" ( ) icon. 4 Select t he software packag es to be installed, and then cli ck the "Nex t" button. The software packages with c heckmark ( ) on the l ist on the scre en will be instal led. Clic k the "D isplay R EADM E" but ton to sho w the i nformatio n on the select ed package.
23 4 3 Click the "Nex t" button in the dialog box to install th e MFP driver or Canc el to quit the installation. The s etu p progr am wi ll sta rt to copy the fi les. If the foll owing screen app ears while the fil es are being co pied (the messa ge may appear m ore than once ), click "Contin ue Anyway".
24 10 Make sur e that the p ower of t he MFP is turned on , and then connect t he USB inter face cable or parallel in terface ca ble. (p.4 5) Window s will de tect the MFP and the Plug and Play screen will appe ar. If you are using Wi ndows XP with the parallel interface, go to s tep 12.
25 4 Installing onto Windows 98/Me/2000 (USB interface) Before sta rting the inst allation, make sure the USB inte rface cab le is not connected to the MFP. 1 Insert the supplied CD -ROM into your CD-ROM drive. 2 Double-click "My Computer" ( ), and then double-click the CD-ROM ( ) icon.
26 6 Copying files for MFP driver i nstallation. 1 After confir ming the m essage in the "Wel come" window, c lick the "Next" button. 2 A dialog b ox appear s asking y ou to verify that the interface cable is not conne cted to the MFP.

31 4 INDICATORS ON THE OPERATION PANEL The ONLIN E ind icator an d the start ( ) indica tor indica te the st ate of the prin ter or scanner. Start indicator On: Indicates the unit i s ready for copy ing or sc anning is bein g performed. Blinking : The ind icator blinks i n the fo llowing situatio ns: • When a p rint job is in terrupted.
32 USING THE PRINTER MODE Opening the printer driver from the start menu Open the printer dri v er se tup scree n by the method sh own below. 1 Click the "start" button. 2 Click "Control Panel", select "Printers and Other Hardware", and then click "Prin ters and F axes".
33 4 How to print 1 Make sure that the paper of the desi red size and type is loaded in the tray. The pr ocedure f or loading paper i s the same as f or loading copy paper. See "LOADING PAPER" (p.14). 2 Open the document you intend to print, and select "Print " from the application's "File " menu.
34 USING THE SCA NNER MODE The scan ner driver for this unit inc ludes an STI (Still i m age) d river and WIA (Window s Image Acqu isition) driver. You can insta ll software that supports th e STI driver an d WIA driver to e nable sc anning using t he operation p anel of th e unit.
35 4 Windows 98/Me/2000 To scan directly int o an appli cation using th e Button Manager on Windows 98 , Window s Me and Windows 20 00. Set the Eve nt Manage r proper ties to se nd only t o Button Manager a s sho wn below.
36 Scan Button Destination Setting Dia log Box After you h ave completed the Button Manag er setting s in Window s, configure the sc an settings in Button Manage r. To config ure the scan settin gs in Button Manager, right cli ck the ( ) icon in the Task bar and select " Setting" from the menu tha t appears.

38 All About The Windows Event Mana ger and scanner events in Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2 000 and Windows XP. Windows Pl atforms provide a mecha nism for s oftware to h andle externa l events for a scann er device like the SHARP AL-1 641CS products .
39 4 Using the SCANNER key to begin scanning 1 Press the SCANNER ( ) key. The uni t enters scan m ode. 2 Place the original you wish to scan on the docum ent glass/SP F. For the p rocedure for plac ing the ori ginal, see "OR IGINAL PL AC EMENT" (p.
40 4 Press the start ( ) key. Scannin g will start an d the sca nned data will be transferre d to the applic ation. Opening the scanner driver and scanning from your computer Follow the steps b elow to open the s canner dri v er set up screen. As an ex ample, this instruct ion is give n using Sh arpdesk as an i m age capture applica tion.
41 4 3 Select " SHARP P ersonal M FP series", an d click t he "Select " button. 4 Select " Acquire Imag e" from the "File" me nu, or click the "Acquire" but ton ( ) . 5 Set the configuration f or scanning (refer to the online manual and help file), and click the "Scan" button.

43 4 HOW TO USE THE ONLINE MANUAL The onli ne manual p rovides detail ed instru ctions for opera ting the unit as the p rinter or scann er and a list of m ethods for deal ing with printi ng or scan ner problems. To acces s the on line manual, y our comput er must h ave Acrobat R eader 5.
44 USING OTHER INSTALL ED DRIVERS If you us e another GDI printer or a Windows Printin g System printer, interferenc e between printers m ay occ ur and prin ting may not be performed properly .
45 4 CONNECTING THE IN TERFACE CABLE This uni t includes both USB and parallel i nterface connec tors. Interface cables for conn ecting the unit to your comp uter are no t included wit h this unit. Plea se purchase the approp riate cable f or your co mputer.
46 This ch apter explains b asic and other copying functi ons. The unit is equipped w ith a o ne-page memory buffer. This m emory a llows the unit t o scan an original once o nly and make u p to 99 c opies.
47 5 About interrupt copying If you pre s s the start ( ) key to begin a copy job wh ile a pr int job u s ing t he paper tray or mul ti-bypass tray is in progress, th e copy job will be gin automa tically after the print data in the unit's mem ory is p rinted (interrupt c opying).
48 Using the SPF The SPF is designed to hol d up to 30 orig inals m easuring from 5-1/2" x 8-1/ 2" to 8-1/2" x 14" and weight ing from 14 lbs. to 23.9 lbs. (52 g /m 2 to 90 g /m 2 ). 1 Make sure that no original is left on the document glass .
49 5 SET THE COPY QUANTITY Set the num ber of copies us ing the two copy qu antity ( , ) keys when copyin g from the d o cument glass or copyi ng from SPF. • Press the ri ght copy q uantity key to se t the unit digit from 0 to 9. This key will not change the tens digit.
50 Automat ic exposure a djustment The autom atic expo sure lev el ca n be a dju sted t o sui t yo ur c opyin g ne eds. This leve l is set f or copyi ng from the d ocume nt glass and copyi ng from the SPF respec tively.
51 5 REDUCTION/ENLARGEMENT/ZOOM Three pr eset reduction rati os and two enlarg ement ratio s can be selected . The zoom function enables co py ratio s election from 2 5% to 400% in 1% increm ents. 1 Set the or iginal an d check th e paper size. 2 Use the co py ratio se lector key and/or ZOOM ( , ) keys to select t he desired c opy ra tio.

ABOUT THE SPECIAL FUNCT IONS OF AL-1641CS Two sided copying When cop ying from one-s ided originals to two-sided copies, copy ing orientati on can be selec ted between Tu rn on Long Edge and Turn on Sh ort Edge.
53 6 Making two-sided c opies 1 Place the o riginal(s) on the do cument gla ss or in t he SPF. (s ee "ORIGINAL PLACEMENT" (p.47 ). 2 Select two-side d copy mode.
54 DESCRIPTION OF SPECIAL FUNCTIONS Toner save mode (page 54) Reduce s toner c onsumption by approxim a tely 10%. Power s ave modes ( page 55) The unit h as two power save mo des of operation : preheat mod e and auto power shut-off m o de.
55 6 2 Press and hold dow n the exposure mode selector key for approximately 5 seconds. The MANUAL ( ) indicator w ill go out and the PHOTO ( ) indicator will begin to blink. The light an d dark indicator marked "5" will light up, indi cating the standard toner mode is active.

To install the TD car tridge, see "INSTALLING THE TD CARTRID GE" (p.10). 5 Close the front cover and then the side co ver by p ressing th e round projectio ns near the side cover open butto n. 63 8 MISF EED REMO VAL When t he misfe ed ( ) in dicator b links or blin ks in the disp lay, the unit will stop because of a misfeed. If a misfeed occu rs when using the SPF, a number may appear in the display af ter a minus s ign. This indicates the number of the orig inals that mus t be returne d to the docume nt feeder tray after a misfee d.
64 A: Misf eed in the paper feed a rea 1 Gently re move the misf ed paper f rom the pa per feed are a as shown in the illustration. W hen the misfeed ( ) indicator blinks, and the misfed paper is not se en from the paper feed area, pull out the paper tray and remove the misfed paper.
65 8 B: Misf eed in the fusing are a 1 Lower th e fusing un it releas e lever. 2 Gently re move the misfed paper from under the fusin g unit as shown in the illustration. If t he paper cannot be removed, proceed to "C: Misf eed in the trans port area".
