8 SAFETY RULES Operational Inspect unit and work area bef ore operation. Clear work area of objects which might be pick ed up and thrown. Remo v e all stones, stic ks, wires, and other f oreign objects. T all grass can hide obstacles . Only T rained Adults may oper ate unit.
9 Service and Adjustments NEVER attempt to make an y adjustments to unit while engine is running. Stop engine and wait f or all moving par ts to stop before servicing (except where speci fi cally recommended). DO NO T make cutting height wheel adjustments while the engine is running.

11 CONTROLS AND F EATURES See Figures 1 and 6 f or Controls and F eatures. Engine/Blade Control The Engine Control must be held against the handlebar in order to star t the engine as well as during mowing operations to k eep the engine running. Releasing the control during operation stops the engine and blade .
12 OPTIONAL CONTROLS See Figures 1 and 6. Cutting Height – Swivel Models T o change front wheel cutting height, inser t clevis pin into the holes that correspond to the desired cutting height. (Figure 6). T o change rear wheel cutting height, mov e cutting height le v ers one notch at a time until the desired cutting height is obtained.
13 3. Clean Fuel Cap and surrounding area to pre v ent dust, dir t and debr is from entering Fuel T ank. 4. Remov e Cap. IMPORT ANT: DO NO T use gasohol or gasoline containing alcohol because alcohol will cause internal par ts to deter iorate. See Engine Manual for correct type and grade of fuel.
14 Mowing Tips The f ollowing tips will help y ou to mow safely , achiev e maximum perf or mance from your mow er and maintain the appearance of y our lawn. When bagging, be sure to release Engine/Blade Control to stop engine and blade bef ore attempting to remov e and empty grass bag.
15 Ariens Dealers will provide any service, par ts or adjustments which ma y be required to keep y our unit operating at peak ef fi ciency . Should engine ser vice be required, contact an Ariens dealer or an author ized engine manuf acturer's ser vice center .
16 4. Install blade , loc k washer and tighten cap scre w until lock w asher is fully compressed (requires 25-30 ft. lbs. of torque on nuts). IMPORT ANT: If mo wer is used under sandy soil conditions, replace b lades when air lifts become eroded. CHECK DRIVE BELT Check driv e belt f or wear or damage .
17 3. Scrape and w ash spark plug with a commercial solv ent. DO NO T blast clean. 4. Replace spark plug. NO TE: Spar king can occur if wire ter minal does not fi t fi rmly on spar k plug. Replace ter minal if damaged. CHECK ENGINE COOLING Engine is air cooled.
18 SERVICE P OSITION Place unit on a fl at le v el surf ace. AL W A YS stop engine . Assure unit is secure and will not tip ov er . Strap and clamp onto bench if needed. A handlebar ser vice position is provided f or tipping the unit f or cleaning and ser vice (Figure 14).
19 ENGINE/BLADE CONTROL Engine Control must stop engine ignition, at 3/4 ” to 1-1/4 ” from handlebar as control is released. T o check (Figure 16): 1. Star t engine and slowly release Control until engine stops fi ring. 2. Measure distance between handlebar and control at the point that engine stopped fi ring.
20 Speed Control Bell Crank The speed control bell crank holds the speed selector rod in position after a speed has been set. The spr ing washers ma y become loose with nor mal wear . If the speed selector rod does not sta y fi rmly in position, adjust the speed control bell crank.
21 PROBLEM PROB ABLE CA USE CORRECTION Engine will not start 1. Fuel tank empty or low . 2. Spark plug wire loose or off. 3. Engine/brak e control cable detached, broken, or not adjusted properly . 1. Check fuel le vel. Fill tank if necessary . 2. Check connection.

27 NE P AS r é gler la hauteur de coupe par les roues tant que le moteur est en marche. Sur les mod è les autotract é s, la commande de traction bloque la marche av ant de la tondeuse . Si cette fonction est en panne, d é brancher le fi l de la bougie et r é parer avant de r é utiliser la tondeuse.
28 OUTILS N É CESSAIRES • Cl é ouver te de 7/16 in. D É B ALLA GE DE LA MACHINE 1. Couper le haut du car ton. 2. Retirer les inser ts, av ant et arri è re, et la documentation. 3. Couper l ’ arr i è re du car ton et faire rouler la machine pour la sor tir.

Nettoyer le bouchon et autour du bouchon du r é ser voir pour emp ê cher la poussi è re, la salet é et les d é br is de p é n é trer dans le r é ser voir .
32 IMPORT ANT : NE P AS rel â cher br usquement la poign é e du star ter contre le moteur. 4. Recommencer jusqu ’à ce que le moteur se mette en marche. (Si le moteur ne d é marre pas, voir la section Dépannage. ) REMARQUE : Il n ’ est pas n é cessaire d ’ amorcer un moteur chaud.
33 Les concessionnaires assurent l ’ entretien, le r é glage et f our nissent les pi è ces de rechange n é cessaires au f onctionnement optimal de la tondeuse . Si l ’ entretien du moteur s ’ av è re n é cessaire, s ’ adresser au concessionnaire ou au centre d ’ entretien homologu é par le fabr icant du moteur .
34 V É RIFICATION DE LA COURROIE D ’ ENTRA Î NEMENT V é ri fi er l ’é tat de la courroie d ’ entra î nement. La remplacer elle est us é e ou endommag é e.
35 V É RIFICATION DE LA BOUGIE Nettoy er la bougie ou la remplacer (s ’ il le f aut) et r é gler l ’é car tement des é lectrodes à 0,76 mm (0.03 in.) toutes les 100 heures ou une fois par an, à la premi è re é ch é ance. P our la nettoyer : 1.
36 P OSITION POUR L ’ ENTRETIEN Placer la machine sur une surface plate et de niveau. ARR Ê TER le moteur. S ’ assurer que la machine est bien cal é e et qu ’ elle ne va pas se renverser . L ’ attacher avec des sangles ou des colliers sur un é tabli si n é cessaire.
37 COMMANDE MOTEUR/LAME La commande du moteur doit arr ê ter l ’ allumage d è s qu ’ elle s ’é loigne de 18 à 30 mm (3/4 à 1-1/4 in.) du guidon quand elle est rel â ch é e. P our s ’ en assurer (Figure 16) : 1. Mettre le moteur en marche et rel â cher lentement la commande moteur jusqu ’à ce que le moteur s ’ arr ê te .
38 Levier de commande de vitesse Le levier de commande de vitesse maintient la tige du s é lecteur de vitesse en place une fois la vitesse s é lectionn é e. Les rondelles é lastiques peuvent se d é tendre à l ’ usage. Si la tige du s é lecteur de vitesse ne reste pas f ermement en place , r é gler le levier de commande de vitesse.
