8 OPERA TING INSTRUCTIONS Do not attempt to drive this mower unless you have read this manual. Learn the location and purpose of all controls and instruments before you operate this mower . Do not hold the key in the ST AR T position longer than 15 seconds.

11 4.4 DIESEL ENGINE BREAK-IN The proper break-in of a new diesel engine can make a di f ference in the performance and life of the engine. Perform the following break-in procedure during the first 50 hours of operation: 1. A new engine should be operated with as near full load as possible.
12 B. Seat Adjustment 1. Pull the handle on the left side of seat (Figure 4-5) and move the seat either forward or back. 2. Release the handle to lock the position. 1. T o travel forward, depress the right foot pedal at the toe. (See Figure 4-6). The further the pedal is de- pressed the faster the mower will travel forward.
13 3. Check that all systems function correctly . 4. When traveling, the throttle control can be adjusted to increase or decrease travel speed. 5. Reduce speed when turning around trees, shrubs, etc. 3. Always operate the engine at full throttle to properly maintain cutting speeds.

20 6.1 P ARKING BRAKE ADJUSTMENT The parking brake linkage should be adjusted whenever the parking brake lever is placed in the Engage position and the parking brake will not hold the mower from moving.
21 Figure 6-2 Throttle Control Adjustment 6.4 CUTTER BRAKE LINKAGE The cutter brake linkage is self-adjusting. If the brake will not hold the cutter blades from turning, consult your Scag dea ler . Do not operate the mower if the cutter brake is not functioning properly .
22 3. After proper tension is obtained, tighten the two bolts and install the pump belt guard. 6.6 PUMP DRIVE BEL T ADJUSTMENT T o adjust belt tension, turn the adjusting nut (Figure 6-1) until 1/2 inch deflection in belt is obtained with 10 pounds of pressure.
23 6.10 BEL T ALIGNMENT Belt alignment is important for proper performance of your Scag mower . If you experience frequent belt wear or breakage, see your authorized Scag service dealer for belt adjustment. 6.1 1 CUTTER DECK ADJUSTMENTS Due to many conditions that exist, it is dif ficult to suggest a setting that will work for every lawn.
24 24 2. T urn the adjusting rods counter-clockwise to lower the front of the deck and clockwise to raise the front of the deck. When a difference of 1/4 inch from front to rear is obtained on left and right, tighten both jam nuts. Figure 6-10 Adjusting Deck Pitch 6.
