In doing so, y ou risk losing the data stored in the card.
23 English TURNING THE CAMERA ON AND OFF T urning on the came ra In the shooting mode 1 Press the ON/OFF button. h The camera turns on. h The camera turns on in the shooting mode that w as activ e bef ore it was last turned off. In the pl a yback mode 1 Press the playback button [ = ] for at least one second.

English 26 4 Set the date and time. 1 Press the [ n ] or [ o ] bu tton to change the ye ar indication. h Y ou can press the [ m ] button to select the indicati on you wish to change. h Repeat thes e steps to select the month indication and da y indication, and set the date to December 24, 2008.

HINT i Under normal conditions, while the batt ery pack is being replaced, an internal battery will maintain the date and time settings.
English 28 BASIC OPERA TION BEFORE T AKING PICTURES How to hold the camera Hold the camera secu rely , keeping your elbows close to y our body and making sure the camera is stabl e. Make sure tha t the lens and flash are not b lock ed by your finge rs or the handstrap .
29 English BEFORE T AKING PICTURES About the touch sensor (touch f ocus) With the touch sensor , the image is fo cuse d simply by a light finger -touch on the shutter button (f ocus loc k). With t he subject in f ocus, just gently press the shutter butt on to take the pictu re for a perf ectly focused image.
English 30 Using the autof ocus The autof ocus will wo rk in almost all situations; ho we ver , there are certain conditions that ma y cause the autof ocus function to not work properly . If the autof ocus function is not working properly , set the focus r ange to capture images (page 63).

33 English BEFORE T AKING PICTURES How to s witch the shooting mode Y our camera can capture single still photos (single-sho t mode), record vid eo clips (video clip recording mode), and also capture a series of still photos (sequential shots mode). 1 Press the ON/OFF button to turn the camera on.
English 34 Switching the displa y mode In the shooting mode , you ca n select the either the “sett ings displa y mode” which allows y ou to confi rm the shooting settings on the monitor while you shoot, or the “normal display mode” in which the setting indicati ons are turned off, providing a full vie w of the subject.
35 English BEFORE T AKING PICTURES Adjust the monitor brightness The brightness of the monitor is adjustab le. Adjust the brightness t o the optimum readabilit y in the ambient light. 1 Press the ON/OFF button to turn the camera on. 2 Press the MENU button for at least 1 second.
English 36 Hints for taking pict ures Muting the camera sounds i The operation so unds that are gener ated, f or e xample , when the shutter button, MENU b utton or SET b utton is pressed, can be m uted (page 105).
37 English CAPTURING AND PLA YING BA CK STI LL IMA GES There are two modes f or capturing still image s. In th e single-shot mode , one image is capture d each time the shutter b utton is pressed . In the sequent ial shots mode, when you press the shutter b utton, seve ral successiv e images are captured.
English 38 3 Ge ntly press the shutter button. h Press the shutter bu tton gently , taking care not to mov e the camer a. h The image that was captur ed appears on the monitor as long as the shutter b utton is kept pressed (post view). 4 Releas e your finger from the shutter button.

45 English CAPTURING A ND PLA YING BA CK STILL IMA GES Deleting fil es Y ou can delete files that are stored on the card if you no longer need t hem. Y ou can delete the files one at a time, or all at once . 1 To delete files from the card, perf orm the delete procedure with the card instal led in the camer a.

47 English SHOO TING SEQUENTIAL SHO TS When the shutter butt on is pressed, still images are captured in succession. 1 Set the camera to the sequent ial shots mode (page 33). 2 Press the shutter button to start shooting. h Shooting sequential sh ots begins.
English 48 HINT About the focus when shooting sequential shots i When sequential shots are capture d, the autof ocus operat es when the focus lo ck is activ ated, fixing the f ocus. Can the self-timer and/or flash be used? i The self-timer and flash do not operate when shooting sequential shots.
49 English VIDEO CLIP RECORDING AND PLA YB A CK Recording a video clip 1 Set the camera to the video clip recording mode (page 33). 2 Press the shutter button. h Video clip recording begins. During recording, the length of the video cli p and the remainin g recording time a v ailable are shown on the monitor .

55 English USING THE SCENE FUNCTION Capture a still image with a voice memo With the still-image-plus-audio a scene fun ction, y ou can add an audio track (abou t 10 seconds maximum) to a captured still image. This audio tr ack is called a “voice memo”.
English 56 How to use th e best shot f eature 1 Se t the camera to the single-shot mode; on the screen to selec t a scene function (page 53), select 5 ; and press the SET button. 2 Pres s the shutter button. h While the settings change , f our still images are shot in sequence.

59 English FLASH SETTING The flash is used not only f or taking pict ures where there is insuffici ent light, but also when t he subject is in shade or in backli ght condition s. Y our camera’ s flash has f our modes of oper ation ( auto mode , f orced flash mode, flash of f mode and red-e ye reduct ion mode).

69 English T OUCH SENSOR (T OUCH FOCUS) SETTING The touch sensor function, by which the autof ocus is activated by a finger- touch on the shutter button, can be set to ON or OFF .
English 70 RESOLUTION/VIDEO SIZE SETTING By setting the ima ge resolution (p ixel s) to a highe r setting, image detail is enhanced f or a smoother , finer picture. Howe ver , the file siz e also becomes large and uses more memory . Select the resolution setting that suits your pur pose.

73 English COMPRESSION RA TE SETTING Set the data compression ra te when shooting images . Even if the same resolution is used, y ou can change the compressi on setting to decrease the image data size so t hat you can capture more images , or increase the i mage data size f or no loss in image quality .
English 74 FOCUS AREA SETTING Y ou can choose from differ ent types of autof ocus: 9-point range find er focus: The correct f ocus is determined from 9 different f ocus points within the shooting area visib le on the monitor . When the image is focused, a ta rget mark & appears.
75 English FOCUS AREA SETTING HINT When spot focus is selec ted... i The f ocus mark + appears in the center of the monitor . When AF seeker is selected... i The fo cus mark + appears in the center of th e monitor . i When the f ocus- lock is acti vate d, the seeker mark appears on the focu sed subject.
English 76 LIGHT -MEASURING MODE SETTING Y ou can select from 3 types of light-measuring modes. Multi-section light-me asuring: The ex posure is adjusted after sampling from m ultiple areas of the entire shooting screen.
77 English ISO SENSITIVITY With the initial sett ings, the ISO sensit ivity is automati cally set according to the brightness of the subject. How ev er, the ISO sensitivity can be set to a fixed setting. 1 Display the Recording Menu (pa ge 66). 2 Select “ISO” and press the SET button.
English 78 HINT i By setting a highe r ISO sensitivity , y ou ca n set higher shut ter speeds and capture images in dark er locations , but noise in the captured images ma y increase.
79 English WHITE B ALANCE This camera automaticall y adjusts the white balance und er most lighting conditions. Ho we v er , if y ou want to specify the lighting conditions or ch ange the ov erall tone of the image, the whit e balance can be manuall y set.
English 80 EXPOSURE CORRECTION When capturing images , you can mak e the image lighter or dark er . 1 Poi nt the camera lens at the subject, and display the Recording Menu (page 66). 2 Se lect “EXP COMPENSATION” and press the SET button. h The screen to adju st the e xposure appea rs.

85 English RO T A T E I M A G E Captured still images can be rotated to the correct orientation for viewing. 1 Display the im age you wish to rotate, and display the Playback Menu (page 82). 2 Select “ROTATE” and press the SET button. h The screen to rotate the image appears.
English 86 CHANGING IMA GE SIZE (RESIZE) The size of a still image that has al ready been capture d at a resolution of t or higher can be changed to 1600 × 1200 pix els or 640 × 480 pixels. The resized image is sav ed as a separate image . 1 Display the still im age whose size you want to change, and display the Playback Menu (page 82).
87 English BLUR CORRECTION Correct the eff ects of camera movement (camer a shak e) to produce a sharper image. 1 Display the i mage to be modified, and display the Playback Menu (page 82). 2 Select “BLUR CORRE CTION”, and press the SET button. h The Blur Correction Screen appears.
English 88 4 I f the modified image is satisfactory, press the SET button. h The screen to sav e the corrected image appears . h T o discontinue t he procedure , press the MENU butt on. The modified image is discarded, and y ou are returned to the Bl ur Correction Screen.
89 English CONTRAST CORRECTION Add contrast (light an d dark) to an image to make it clearer . 1 Display the i mage to be modified, and display the Playback Menu (page 82). 2 Select “CONTRAST CORRECT”, and press the SET button. h The Contrast Correction Scre en appears.
