Getting star ted 9 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 11 Charg ing with the charger Connect the USB cable to the USB pow er adaptor and then plug the end of the USB cable into the multipurpose jack . Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty .
Getting star ted 12 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket.
Getting star ted 13 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 14 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 15 • F ollow all posted warnings and directions from authorised personnel in ar eas where the use of wir eless devices is restricted, such as aer oplanes and hospitals. • Pr ess and hold the Po wer button and tap Fligh t mode to disable the wireless featur es.
16 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 17 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion. • Do not allow the touch scr een to contact water .
Basics 18 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 19 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 20 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motion , and then drag the switch at the t op right of the screen to the right.
Basics 21 Sw eeping Sw eep your hand across the scr een to capture a screenshot. The image is sav ed in Galler y → Screenshots . It is not possible to capture a screenshot while using some applications . C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback .
Basics 22 A c tiva ting Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run two applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w panel can run. • When launching applications that c ontain multimedia files, such as music or videos, sound fr om both files will be play ed.
Basics 23 Using Multi W indow applications While using Multi Windo w applications, tap or and use one of the following: • : Switch loca tions between Multi Window applica tions. • : Maximise the window to fit the screen. • : Close the application.
Basics 24 • Blocking mode : Activate or deactivate blocking mode. In block ing mode , the device will block notifications. T o select which notifications will be blocked, tap Settings → Blocking mode . • P ower saving : Activate or deactivate po wer-sa ving mode.
Basics 25 Adding an it em Cust omise the Home screen by adding widgets , folders, or panels . T ap and hold the empty area on the Home screen, and then select one of the follo wing categories: • Apps and widgets : Add widgets or applications t o the Home screen.
Basics 26 Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen. On the Home screen, tap → Set wallpaper → Home screen , and then select one of the follo wing: • Galler y : See photos taken by the device ’ s camera or images do wnloaded from the Internet.
Basics 27 L ocked scr een The locked screen pr events the device fr om unwan ted operation when not in use and also allows y ou to add conv enient widgets. A dding widgets T o use widgets when the scr een is locked, on the Applications scr een, tap Settings → Lock screen , and then tick Multiple widgets .
Basics 28 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 29 Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience . T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to Crea te folder . Enter a f older name and then tap OK . Put applica tions into the new f older by dragg ing, and then tap S ave to sav e the ar rangement.
Basics 30 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 31 Changing language ke yboards Add languages on the keyboar d, and then slide the space key left or right to change language keyboards . Handwriting T ap , and then write a word with a finger . Suggested wor ds appear as charac ters ar e enter ed.
Basics 32 C onnec ting to a W i-F i net w ork Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. (p . 92) Ensure that the Wi-F i connection is ac tive bef ore using Internet applications . T urning W i-F i on and off Open the notifications panel, and then tap Wi - Fi to turn it on or off .
Basics 33 F orgetting W i-Fi net w orks Any network that has ev er been used, including the current network, can be forgott en so the device will not automatically c onnec t to it.
Basics 34 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 35 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 36 Setting a face and v oice unlock On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → F ace and v oice . F it your face in the frame to be captur ed and then set a voice command. Then, set a backup unlock PIN or pattern to unlock the scr een in case the face and voice unlock fails.
Basics 37 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
38 C ommunication C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter c ontact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 39 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • : Compose an email . Displaying c ontac ts By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts on the device or another account.
Communication 40 F av ourite con tac ts T ap Con tacts → F av ourites . T ap , and then take one of the f ollowing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Add t o fav ourites : Add c ontacts to favourites . • Remov e from fav ourites : Remove c ontacts from favourit es.
Communication 41 Sending an email to a group ’ s members Selec t a gr oup , tap → Send email , select members, and then tap Done . Business card Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set up my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal address , and then tap S ave .
Communication 42 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done . The device will send the message a t the specified time and date .
Communication 43 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 44 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then selec t the label to assign.
Communication 45 Messenger Use this application to cha t with others via Google+ instant messaging ser vice . T ap Messenger on the Applications screen.
46 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to shar e, save , or print the current webpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 47 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 48 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 49 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed. Select the device you wan t to pair with, and then acc ept the auto- generated passkey on both devices to c onfirm.
W eb & network 50 Samsung Link Use this application to pla y contents sav ed on various devices over the Internet. Y ou can play and send multimedia files on your device t o another device or web storage service. T o use this application, y ou must sign in to your Samsung accoun t and regist er two or more devices.
W eb & network 51 Managing con tents on a w eb storage service Selec t a web st orage ser vice , and then view and manage your files. T o download files fr om a web storage service, tap , selec t files, and then tap Done .
W eb & network 52 Joining Group Pla y T ap Join group , select a Group Play session to join, and then en ter the passwor d for the group . Selec t a media category and the content that is curr ently being shared will appear on the device . W a tchON Use this application to c onnec t to a T V to watch your fa vourite shows and movies .
W eb & network 53 Smar t Remote Use this application to use the devic e as a remote contr ol for T V s and enter tainment systems . T ap Smar t Remote on the Applications screen. Y ou must first connec t the device to a Wi-F i net work and ensur e that the device ’ s infrar ed por t is facing the T V .
54 Media Music Pla yer Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music Play er on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 55 T o set a personalised sound while listening t o songs with a headset, tap → Settings → Adv anced → Adapt Sound → On . When you turn the v olume up to level 14 or higher , the adapt sound option is not applied to music playback. If you turn the volume down t o level 13 or lower , the option is r eapplied.
Media 56 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap the image on the preview scr een where the camera should focus . When the subject is in focus , the focus frame turns green. T ap to take the photo . View mor e options. Change the shooting mode. Indicates which shooting mode is in use.
Media 57 • P anorama : T ake a photo composed of man y photos strung together . T o get the best shot, f ollow these tips. – Move the camera slo wly in one direc tion.
Media 58 Recor ding mode T ap → to change rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for Email : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via email . Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out .
Media 59 Share shot T ap → , and then select one of the following: • Share shot : Send a photo directly to another device via Wi-F i Direct. • Buddy photo share : Set the device to rec ognise a person ’ s face that you ha ve tagged in a photo and send it to that person.
Media 60 • F ocus mode : Selec t a f ocus mode. Aut o focus is camera-controlled. Macro is for v er y close objects. • GPS tag : Attach a GPS location tag t o the photo . Activate this fea ture when taking photos to crea te albums in Story Album .
Media 61 Shor tcuts Reorganise shor tcuts f or easy access to the camera ’ s various options . T ap → Edit quick settings . T ap and hold an option and drag it to a slot a t the top of the screen. The other icons can be moved within the list b y tapping and dragging them.
Media 62 Pla ying videos Video files sho w the icon on the preview . S elect a video to watch it and tap . Editing images When viewing an image, tap and use the f ollowing func tions: • F av ourite : Add the image t o favourites . • Slideshow : Star t a slideshow with the images in the curren t folder .
Media 63 Deleting images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap . • When viewing an image, tap . Sharing images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap to send them to others.
Media 64 Organising with f olders Creat e a folder to organise images or videos stor ed in the device. Y ou can cop y or move files from one f older to another . T o cr eate a new f older , tap . Enter a name for the f older , tap OK , and then tick images or videos.
Media 65 V iewing stor y albums Selec t a story album. The cov er image appears on the first page. Scroll left or right to view images in the stor y album. When viewing an image, tap and use the f ollowing func tions: • Add c ontent : Add mor e content to the curren t page.
Media 66 P aper Ar tist Use this application to make images look like illustr ations with fun effects or frames . T ap P aper Ar tist on the Applications screen. Use ar tistic tools t o edit an image. The edited image is sav ed in the Galler y → P aper Pictures folder .
Media 67 V ideo Pla yer Use this application to pla y video files. T ap V ideo Player on the Applications screen. • A void locking the device ’ s screen while playing a DivX Video- On-Demand. Each time you lock the scr een while playing a DivX V ideo- On-Demand, one of your available r ental counts is lost.
Media 68 Sharing videos T ap → Share via , select a sharing method, selec t videos by ticking, and then tap Share . Using P opup V ideo play er Use this f eature t o use other applications without closing the video play er . While watching videos, tap to use the pop-up player .
Media 69 Sharing videos Selec t the video to view , tap , and then select a shar ing method. Uploading videos Selec t your ac count, tap , select a video, ent er information for the video , and then tap UPL OAD . F lipboard Use this application to ac cess your personalised magazines.

Utilities 76 V iewing a memo T ap the memo thumbnail to open it. Scroll left or right to see mor e memos. T ap and use the f ollowing: • Delete : Delete the memo . • Colour : Change the background c olour . • Lock : Lock the memo so tha t others cannot view it.
Utilities 77 Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place. Invite others to the ev ent by sending an email.
Utilities 78 Deleting ev ents Selec t a date , and then tap → Delete . Sharing ev ents Selec t an even t, tap → Share via , and then select a sharing method. Dropbo x Use this application to sa ve and share files with others via the Dropbo x cloud storage.

The alarm goes off only when you ar e in the location. • Snooze : Set an inter val and the number of times f or the alarm to repeat after the pr eset time.

92 Settings About Settings Use this application to c onfigure the device, set application options , and add accounts. T ap Settings on the Applications screen. Wi - Fi Activate the Wi-F i featur e to connect to a Wi-F i network and access the Internet or other network devices.
Settings 93 W i-F i D irect Wi-F i Direct connects two devices directly via a Wi-F i network without requiring an access point. On the Settings screen, tap Wi - Fi → W i-Fi Direct . Bluetooth Activate the Bluet ooth featur e to exchange inf or mation ov er shor t distances.
Settings 94 Nearby devic es • F ile sharing : Activate media sharing to allo w other DLNA- enabled devices to access media files on your device . • Shared c ontents : Set the device to share y our content with other devices . • Allow ed devices list : View the list of devic es that can access y our device.
Settings 95 Sound Change settings for various sounds on the devic e. • V olume : Adjust the v olume level for music and videos, sy stem sounds, and notifications. • Default notification sound : Selec t a ringtone f or events , such as incoming messages.
Settings 96 • Brightness : Set the brightness of the display . • Screen timeout : Set the length of time the device waits befor e turning off the display ’ s backlight. • Day dream : Set the device to launch a screensa ver when your device is connected to a desktop dock or charg ing.
Settings 97 P ow er saving mode Activate po wer-sa ving mode and change the settings for power -saving mode. • CPU pow er saving : Set the device to limit some syst em resourc e usage. • Screen pow er saving : Set the device to decrease the brightness of the displa y .
Settings 98 L ock screen Change settings for the locked scr een. • Screen lock : Activate the scr een lock feature . The following options ma y var y depending on the screen lock f eature selected. • Multiple widgets : Set the device to allow use of widgets on the locked scr een.
Settings 99 Securit y Change settings for securing the device . • Encr ypt device : Set a password t o encr ypt data sav ed on the device. Y ou must enter the passwor d each time you turn on the device . Charge the batt er y befor e enabling this setting because it may take more than an hour to encr ypt your da ta.
Settings 100 Language and input Change the settings for t ext input. Some options may not be available depending on the selected language. Language Selec t a display language f or all menus and applications. Default Selec t a default keyboard type f or text input.
Settings 101 • Handwriting : Cust omise settings for handwriting mode , such as recog nition time, pen thickness, or pen colour . • Adv anced : – Aut o capitalisation : Set the device to automatically capitalise the first char acter af ter a final punctuation mark , such as a full stop , question mark , or exclamation mark.
Settings 102 • W ake up command : Set the device to star t voic e recognition by sa ying a wake up command while using S V oice . • W ake up in lock screen : Set the device to rec ognise your wake up command when the screen is locked . • Set wake -up command : Set a wake up command to launch S V oice or per form a specified function.
Settings 103 P ointer speed Adjust the point er speed for the mouse or trackpad connec ted to y our device. Cloud Change settings for syncing data or files with y our Samsung account or Dropbo x cloud storage . Backup and reset Change the settings for manag ing settings and data.
Settings 104 V oic e contr ol Change settings to contr ol options by voice commands . A cc essor y Change the accessory settings. • Dock sound : Set the device to play a sound when y our device is connected to or remov ed from a desktop dock.
Settings 105 A cc essibility Ac cessibility ser vices are special f eatures for those with certain physical disabilities . Access and aler t the follo wing settings to impro ve accessibility to the device . • Aut o-rotate screen : Set the inter face to r otate automa tically when you r otate the device .
Settings 106 • Mono audio : Enable mono sound when listening to audio with one earbud . • T urn off all sounds : Mute all device sounds . • Assistant menu : Set the device to show the assistiv e shor tcut icon that helps you acc ess functions suppor ted by external buttons or featur es on the notifications panel.
107 T r oubleshooting When y ou turn on your devic e or while you ar e using the device , it prompts y ou to enter one of the f ollowing codes: P assword: When the device lock f eature is enabled, y ou must enter the password y ou set for the device .
T roubleshooting 108 The devic e beeps and the batter y icon is empty Y our batter y is low . Recharge or replac e the battery to continue using the device. The ba tter y does not charge pr operly or the device turns off The battery in the device is not user replaceable .
