Getting Started 7 R emo ving the B atter y 䊳 Lift up (1) and remove (2) the batter y . In stal li ng the SIM Ca r d Important !: The plug-in SIM card and its contacts information can be easily dama ged by scratching or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card.

Getting Started 9 In stal li ng or R emo ving the Memor y Car d Y our phone supports an optional memory card (microSD™) for data stora ge of such things as music, pictures, video or other files. This type of me mory card is designed fo r use with this mobile phone and other devices.

Getting Started 11 Char gi ng a Batte r y Y our phone is powered by a recharge able Lithium ion bat ter y . A wal l ch arger , which is used for charging the batter y , is included with your phone. Use only approved ba tteries and chargers. Ask yo ur local Samsung dealer for further details.
12 2. Plug the adapter’ s p o wer plug into a standard AC wall outlet. 3. When charging is finished, fi rst unplug the adapter’ s power plug from the AC wall outlet an d then disconnect the wall charger’ s conn ector from the phone.
Getting Started 13 Accessing Y our V oice Ma il Y ou can access your V oice Mail by ei ther pressing and holding on the keypad, by using the phone’ s menu, or by pressing the Voice Mail icon in the Widge t bar . T o access V oice Mail using the menu: 1.

Rece iv er allows you to hear the other caller and the different ring tone s or soun ds offered by your phone.
16 4. P ower -on/Off (Exit) key ends a call. Press and hold for two seconds to turn the phone on or off. While in the Menu mode, it returns th e phone to the Home screen and cancels your inp ut. 5. Menu k ey when pressed, displays the Main menu screen.
Understanding Y our Phon e 17 4. P ower/Accessor y Interf ace connector allows yo u to connect a po wer cable or op tional accesso ries such as a USB/data cable or a hands-free headse t for convenient, hands-free conversations.
18 Unlockin g the Phone When you first turn on the device the screen is lo cked (as shown) and displays the Smart unlo ck guide (see “Smart Unlock” on page 154.) Press and hold the lock icon on the si de of the phone or draw a character to unlock the phone.
Understanding Y our Phon e 19 Icons This list identifies the sy mbols that appear on your phone’ s display screen: Displays the received signal strength. Th e grea ter the number of bars, the stronger the signal. Displays wh en you are out o f your service area.
20 Bac klight A backlight illumina tes the int ernal display and the keypad. When you pre ss any key , the backlight turns on. Backlight turns off when no keys ar e press ed or pressed within a give n period of time , depending on the Backlight menu setting.
Displays 21 Section 3: D isplays This section explains the widg et and menu na vigatio n for your phone. It also includes an outl ine of al l the a vailable menus associated with your phone. Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for u sing the applic ations or widgets on your pho ne.
22 Cust omiz ing t he Home Sc re en Y ou can customize the Home screen by d ocking widgets on differen t panels of the Home sc reen, or selecting a new wallpaper so you can easily distinguish between each of the individual panels. Selecting a New Wallpaper There are several sources avai lable for wallpapers.
Displays 23 W idget Mana ger The Widget manager allows you to select widgets to display in the Widget bar . Y ou can select wi dgets that function offline or widge ts that function online ( such as Y ahoo! Financ e, F acebook, T wit ter , and more).
24 Section 4: Na vigation This section explains the menu navigation for your phone. It also includes an outline of all the a vai lable menus associated with your phone. Menu Naviga tion Y ou can tailor the phone’ s range of functions to your needs using me nus and sub-menus.

26 Men u Lists Once you display a menu list, tapping an item causes different fu nctions, depending on wh ich item you tapped. F or example, you can o pen another list, add tex t to a messag e, send a message, play a song, or view a photo.

Navigation 33 Scre en R otation The screen can be rotate d to change the orientation fr om portrai t (default) to lands cape. For example: rotate to landscape orientation when entering text, to provide a larg er keyboard, or when viewing web content to minimize scrolling.

When yo u add a Birthday to the contact, a Birt hday event is create d and displays on the appropriate day .
36 Calendar With the Calendar fea ture, you can: • Consult the cale ndar by month , week, or day . • Set schedules and no te anniversaries. • Create an eve nts list. • Set an al arm to act as a reminder , if necessary . • Check your ev ent memor y status.
Navigation 37 Games and Apps Provides access t o Games and apps and other applications so you can download additional games . 1. From the Home screen, open the Widget tray and ta p the Games and apps widget to launch the Games and apps menu. 2. Ta p Get New G ames to launch the web browser .
38 Message Inbo x The Message Inbox stores received me ssages. 䊳 F rom the Home scre en, open the Wi dget tray and tap the Messages icon to display the Inbox. From this screen yo u can move messages from th e Inbox into other folders. Fo r more informa t ion, refer to “Message Inbox” on page 82.

40 V oice R ecognition An adva nced voice software used to activate a wi de v ariety of f unction s on your phone. Nuance ® software automatically vo ice activates (up to 2,000 c ontacts) for voice dialing and searc hing. Speak a contact name naturally to dial, and use your voice to look up contacts, launch applica tions and navigate phone menus.
Navigation 41 Y ahoo! Finance Watch the up-to-the min ute stocks, plus news, and market sta tistics. 1. From the Home screen, open the Widget tray and ta p the Y ahoo! Finance widget. 2. Ta p Edit . 3. Enter the financ ial da ta in the field then ta p the search icon.
42 Accessing W idgets W idget Bar Naviga tion Y ou can drag the widgets to th e desktop to use the applicatio n or feature, then drag it back to the Widget bar when you are finished.

48 R edialing the Last Numb er The phone stores the numbers of the calls you ha ve dialed, receiv ed, or missed if the call er is identified. T o recall an y of these numbers: 1.

Call Functions 57 • In very noise environments, i t may be helpful to us e the supplied earset or optional Bluetooth he adsets. Contacts V oice Activation On startup, Nuance reads your Contac ts and voice-ac tivate s all the names.
58 Name Lookup T o perform a name lo okup, you will need to ha ve some entries i n your Contact list. T o access Voice: 1. F rom the Home screen, press then touch V oice recognition . After a brief pause, a list of available commands di splays on th e screen along with the “ Say a command ” message.
Call Functions 59 Checki ng Phon e Status Use the Check command to see and hear status information from your phone, inc luding its pho ne number , status, current signal strength, and batt er y leve l. T o check phone status: 1. F rom the Home screen, press then touch V oice recognition .
60 Adaptation If Nuance frequently do es not recognize yo ur commands, adapting digit dialing to your voice improves the accuracy of digit. After you a dapt Digit Dial , your phone recognizes only your voice. Other users are n ot able to use the handset with Nuance unless the handset is reset to factor y defaults.

62 Section 6: Entering T ext This section outlines how to select the desired text input mode when entering characters into your phone. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entr y system to reduce th e number of ke y strokes asso ciated with entering text.
Entering T e xt 63 3. Sym /shift displays pages of Symbols. Choose from an ex tensive list of symbols and other characte r sets. Alt+Sym/shi ft allows y ou to enter the Symbol displ ayed on the key . Also converts the al phabetic character into uppercase.
64 Example: Writing a text message. There are two different methods for changing T ext Input Mode, depending on which mo de you are holding the device (portrai t, or landscape). In P ortrait mode a 3x4 numeric keypad di spla ys with the defa ult set to T9Ab (predictive text) mode.
Entering T e xt 65 Using T9 Mode T9 is a predictive text in put mode that allows you to key in any character us ing single keystrokes. This text input mode is based on a built-in dictionary . Note: T o mode works only in Portrait mode. T o enter a word in T9 mode: 1.
66 Note: This feature may not be available for some langua ges. • T o enter periods, hyphens, and other special charac ters, touch Sym bols and then touch the correspo nding key . If t he symbol does not display on the initial screen, touch the left or right key to display the next set of symb ols.
Entering T e xt 67 Ke y s By default, th e first letter of an entr y is ca pitalize d and all consecutive let ters are kept in l owercase (unl ess you touch the Shift ke y). After entering a character , the curs or automatica lly advances to the next spa ce after two seconds or when you enter a ch aracter on a different key .
68 Section 7: Under standi ng Y our Contacts List This section expl ains how to use and manage your Phonebook. Y ou can sa ve pho ne numbers to your phone’ s memory or to your SIM card. Using Mobile Addr ess Book Use the following procedures to st ore a new contact to your phone.

Note: If you cannot remember a location number , you must search the Phonebook to find an entr y by name.
