1 G ETTING S TARTED Thank you for purchasing this multifunctional product. Y our machine provides you with printing, copying, scanning and faxing functions! This chapter gives you step-by-step instructions for setting up your machine.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .2 Setting Up Your Machine Unpacking Remo ve the machine and all accessories from the packing carton. Make sure that the machine has been packed with the following items.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .3 1 N OTES : • Components may differ from one country to another . • Y ou should use the telephone line cord which is supplied with your machine. If you are replacing it with another vendor’s, it should be AWG #26 or larger telephone line cord.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .4 Selecting a Location Select a level, stable place with adequate space for air circulation. Allow extr a space for opening covers and tr ays. The area should be well-ventilated and away from direct sunlight or sources of heat, cold and humidit y .

G ETTING S TARTED 1 .9 1 Installing the Toner Cartridge 1 Open the front cov er . 2 R emove the starter toner cartridge from its bag. Gently roll the cartridge 5 or 6 times to distribute the toner ev enly inside the cartridge. Thoroughly rolling the cartridge will assure the maximum copies per cartridge.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .10 3 Slide the toner cartridge into the machine until it locks into place completely . 4 Close the front cover . Make sure that the cover is securely closed.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .11 1 Loading Paper Y ou can load approximately 250 sheets. T o load a stack of Letter-sized paper: 1 Pull open the paper tr ay and remove it from the machine. 2 Push down on the pressure plate until it locks into place. 3 F an the edges of the paper stack to separ ate the pages.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .12 4 Insert the paper stack into the paper tr ay with the side you want to print on facing up . N OTE : If you want to load a different size of paper , you need to adjust the paper guides. For details, see page 1.13. 5 P ay attention to the paper limit mark on the left inside w all of the tray .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .13 1 Changing the Paper Size in the Paper Tray T o load longer sizes of paper , such as Legal-sized paper , you need to adjust the paper guides to extend the paper tr ay . 1 After pressing and unlatching the guide lock, slide the paper length guide out completely to extend the paper tr ay to its full length.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .14 3 Pinching the paper width guide as shown, move it tow ard the stack of paper until it lightly touches the side of the stack. N OTES : • Do not push the paper width guide far enough to cause the materials to warp. • If you do not adjust the paper width guide, it may cause paper jams.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .15 1 2 T o connect a telephone and/or answering machine to your machine, plug the cord of y our extension phone or answering machine into the EXT jack. UK users should plug the cord of the extension phone into the supplied T AM lead and plug the cord of the T AM lead into the EXT jack on the back of y our machine.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .16 3 Connect a USB cable to the USB connector on your machine. Y ou must purchase a USB 2.0 compliant cable that is no more than 3 m in length. If you want to use a parallel printer cable, purchase only a IEEE 1284 compliant par allel cable and connect it to the parallel connector on y our machine.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .17 1 Turning the Machine On 1 Plug one end of the supplied three-pronged electrical t ype cord into the AC socket on the machine and the other end into a properly grounded AC outlet. 2 Press the power switch to turn the machine on.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .18 Installing Software About Samsung Software Y ou must install softw are using the supplied CD-ROM after you have set up y our machine and connected it to your computer .

G ETTING S TARTED 1 .20 Installing Samsung Software in Windows System Requirements Before you begin, ensure that y our system meets the minimum requirements. V erify the following: N OTES : • For Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP , the system administrator should install the software.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .21 1 Installing Samsung Software N OTES : • Cancel the “New Hardware Found” window when your computer boots up. • Make sure that your machine is turned on and connected to your computer’s par allel port or USB port before installing software .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .22 3 Choose the installation type. • Typical : Installs the common softw are for your printer , such as printer driver , T wain driver , R emote Control P anel. This is recommend for most users. • Custom : Allows you to choose the language of the software and the components y ou want to install.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .23 1 4 After the installation is finished, the window asking y ou to print a test page appears. If y ou choose to print a test page, select the check bo x and click Next . Otherwise, Skip to step 6. 5 When the test page prints out correctly , click Yes .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .24 Installing Samsung SmarThru 1 Insert the supplied CD-ROM into y our CD-ROM drive. 2 Click Install SmarThru . 3 Click Next . 4 F ollow the on-screen instructions and click Next . 5 Click Next . 6 Select the installation type and click Next .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .25 1 If you select the Custom installation, y ou may choose the components you w ant to install. • SmarThru Software : to scan and edit images and to work with electronic documents. • OCR Software : AnyPage Lite softw are to enable OCR.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .26 When you select SmarThru networking , you can elect to install it as a Server , a Client or both. The Server option allows y ou to share a local fax modem and/or a scanner ov er a LAN. Y ou can control sharing by managing a remote service user .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .27 1 Repairing Software R epairing is required if your installation fails or the softw are does not work properly . This Repairing procedure does not repair SmarThru software. 1 Y ou can select Start → Programs → Samsung MFP 750 Series → Maintenance .

G ETTING S TARTED 1 .31 1 Setting the Machine ID In some countries, y ou are required b y law to indicate your fax number on any fax y ou send. The Machine ID , containing your telephone number and name or compan y name, will be printed at the top of each page sent from y our machine.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .32 Entering Characters Using the Number Keypad As you perform various tasks, you may need to enter names and numbers. F or example, when you set up y our machine, you enter your name or y our company’ s name and telephone number .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .33 1 Keypad Letters and Numbers Changing Numbers or Names If y ou mak e a mistake while entering a number or name, press the ➛ button to delete the last digit or character .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .34 Setting the Date and Time The current date and time are shown on the displa y when your machine is on and ready to work. All of y our faxes will have the date and time printed on them. N OTE : If power to the machine is cut off , you need to reset the correct time and date once the power is restored.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .35 1 Changing the Clock Mode Y ou can set your machine to display the current time using either 12-hour or 24-hour format. 1 Press Menu until “Machine Setup” appears on the top line of the display . 2 Press the scroll button ( ➛ or ❿ ) until you see “ Clock Mode ” on the bottom line and press Enter .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .36 Setting Sounds Y ou can control the following sounds: • Ringer: adjusts the ringer v olume. • K ey Sound: With this option set to “On, ” a key tone sounds each time a key is pressed. • Alarm Sound: turns the alarm sound on or off .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .37 1 Speaker Volume 1 Press On Hook Dial . A dial tone sounds from the speak er . 2 Press the scroll button ( ➛ or ❿ ) until you hear the loudness you want. The displa y shows the current volume lev el. 3 Press Stop/Clear to sav e the change and return to Standby mode.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .38 Toll Save Mode Using the Toll Save button on the control panel, you can quickly set your machine to send the document(s) stored in the memory during the preset time slot, when the call charge is lowered. This T oll Save mode helps you to tak e advantage of lower long distance rates at night, for example.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .39 1 Power Save Mode P ower Sav e mode allows your machine to reduce power consumption when it is not in actual use. Y ou can turn this mode on by selecting the length of time for which the machine w aits after a job is printed before it switches to a reduced power state.

P APER H ANDLING 2 .2 Selecting Print Materials Y ou can print on a variety of print materials, such as plain paper , envelopes, labels, tr ansparencies and so on. Alw ays use print materials that meet the guidelines for use with this machine. See “P aper Specifications” on page A.
P APER H ANDLING 2 .3 2 Guidelines for Paper and Special Materials When selecting or loading paper , envelopes or other special material, keep these guidelines in mind: • Always use paper and other materials that conform with the specifications listed under “Paper Specifications” on page .
P APER H ANDLING 2 .4 - T o avoid smudging caused by fingerprints, handle them carefully . - T o a void fading, do not expose the printed transparencies to prolonged sunlight. • F or labels: - V erify that their adhesiv e material can toler ate fusing temperature of 200 o C (392 o F) for 0.
P APER H ANDLING 2 .5 2 Printing to the Front Output Tray (Face down) The front output tra y collects printed paper face-down in correct order . The tray should be used for most print jobs. Printing to the Rear Output Slot (Face up) Using the rear output slot, paper comes out of the machine face up.
P APER H ANDLING 2 .6 T o use the rear output slot: 1 Open the rear cov er by pulling it upward. C AUTION : The fusing area inside the rear part of your machine becomes hot once powered. Be careful when you access this area. 2 If you do not w ant to use the rear output slot, close the rear cover .
P APER H ANDLING 2 .7 2 The paper level indicator on the front of the paper tr ay shows the amount of paper currently left in the tr ay . When the tra y is empty , the indicator of the bar is lowered. T o load paper , pull open the paper tr ay and load paper with the print side face down.
P APER H ANDLING 2 .8 Using the Manual Feeder Use the manual feeder to print transparencies, labels, envelopes or postcards in addition to making quick runs of paper t ypes or sizes that are not currently loaded in the paper tr ay . P ostcards, 3.5 by 5.
P APER H ANDLING 2 .9 2 2 Adjust the paper guide to the width of the print material. N OTE : When printing on previously printed paper from the manual feeder , the printed side should be facing down with an uncurled edge to the machine. If you experience problems with paper feed, turn the paper around.
P APER H ANDLING 2 .10 Setting the Paper Type and Size for the Manual Feeder After loading paper in the manual feeder , you need to set the correct paper type and siz e using the control panel buttons. These settings will apply to Copy mode. F or PC-printing, you need to select the paper size in the application program you use.

P RINTING 3 .2 Printing a Document in Windows The following procedure describes the gener al steps required for printing from various Windows applications. The exact steps for printing a document may v ary depending on the application program y ou are using.
P RINTING 3 .3 3 4 Now you see the Samsung MFP 750 Series Properties window , which allows you to access all of information y ou need when using your machine. The printer’ s Properties window may differ , depending on your oper ating system. This User’ s Guide shows the Properties window on Windows 98.
P RINTING 3 .4 5 From the Paper tab, select the paper source, siz e and type. For further details, see page 3.7. 6 If necessary , you can set the sequence for the pages to print from the Extra tab. Select the print order you want to use from the Print Order drop-down list.
P RINTING 3 .5 3 Canceling a Print Job There are two wa ys to cancel a print job: T o stop a print job from the control panel: Press the Stop/Clear button. Y our machine finishes printing the page that is moving through the machine and deletes the rest of the print job.
P RINTING 3 .6 Using a Favorite Setting The Favorites option, which is visible on each tab , allows you to save the current properties settings for future use. T o save a F av orites item: 1 Change the settings on each tab , as needed. 2 Enter a name for the item in the Favorites input box.

P RINTING 3 .14 Printing Posters Y ou can print a single-page document onto 4, 9 or 16 sheets of paper , for the purpose of pasting the sheets together to form one poster-sized document. 1 When you change the print settings from y our software application, access the printer’ s Properties.

When this box is check ed, a message window appears each time you submit a document for printing, asking y ou to confirm your wish to print an o verlay on y our document. Answering Yes to the window means that the selected overla y prints with your document.
P RINTING 3 .22 Setting Up the Locally Shared Printer Y ou can connect the machine directly to a selected computer , which is called “host computer , ” on the network. Y our machine can be shared by other users on the network through a Windows 9x, Me, 2000, XP or NT 4.

C OPYING 4 .2 Loading Paper for Copying The instructions for loading print materials are the same whether you are printing, faxing or copying. F or coping, you can use Letter-, A4-, Legal-siz ed print materials. For further details, see page 1.11 for loading in the paper tr ay and page 2.
C OPYING 4 .3 4 Making a Copy 1 Pull the document support all the w ay out. F old out the extender , if necessary . 2 Load the documents of up to 50 pages face down into the ADF .
C OPYING 4 .4 Setting Copy Options The buttons on the control panel let y ou make all the basic copy options; darkness, document type, cop y size and number of copies. Set the following options for the current cop y job before pressing Start Copy/Fax to mak e copies.
C OPYING 4 .5 4 Original Type The Original T ype setting is used to improve the copy quality by selecting the document for the current cop y job. T o select the document type, press Original Type . Each time you press the button, the indicator labeled with the selected mode turns on.
C OPYING 4 .6 2 Use Reduce/Enlarge or the scroll button ( ➛ or ❿ ) to find the size setting y ou want. 3 Press Enter to sav e the selection. T o fine-tune the size of copies: 1 Press Reduce/Enlarge . 2 Press Reduce/Enlarge or the scroll button ( ➛ or ❿ ) until “Custom:50-200 %” displa ys on the bottom line.

C OPYING 4 .8 Collation Copying The Collation copying feature is a vailable only when y ou load documents in the ADF . 1 Press Menu on the control panel until “ Copy Setup” appears on the top line of the displa y . 2 Press the scroll button ( ➛ or ❿ ) to display “Copy Collated” on the bottom line.
5 S CANNING Scanning with your machine lets you turn pictures and text into digital files on your computer . Then you can fax or e-mail the files, display them on y our web site or use them to create projects that you can print using Samsung SmarThru software.
S CANNING 5 .2 Scanning Basics Y our machine offers two ways to scan: • From the Samsung SmarThru software: Launch Samsung SmarThru and open the Scan Wizard to begin scanning. See below. • From TWAIN-compliant software: Y ou can use other software including Adobe PhotoDeluxe and Adobe Photoshop.
S CANNING 5 .3 5 3 Load the document(s) to be scanned face down into the ADF (Automatic Document F eeder) and adjust the document guides. For detailed guidelines for preparing an original document, see page 4.2. 4 Once you have installed Samsung software, you see the SmarThru icon on the desktop.
S CANNING 5 .4 5 T o open the Scan Wizard, click the Scan Wizard icon in the plug-in bar on the left of the SmarThru 3 window . The Scan Wizard lets you use the following services: • Scan Lets you scan the original documents and sa ve them in the Image Manager of the Samsung SmarThru system.

M AINTENANCE 8 .6 Maintaining the Toner Cartridge Toner Cartridge Storage T o get the most from the toner cartridge, keep the following guidelines in mind: • Do not remo ve the toner cartridge from its package until it is ready to use. • Do not refill the toner cartridge.
M AINTENANCE 8 .7 8 Redistributing Toner When the toner cartridge is near the end of its life, white streaks or light print occurs. The L CD displays the warning message, “[T oner Low]. ” Y ou can tempor arily reestablish the print qualit y by redistributing the remaining toner in the cartridge.
M AINTENANCE 8 .8 Replacing the Toner Cartridge When the toner eventually runs out, only blank pages print when a print job is sent or when a fax is receiv ed. At this stage, the toner cartridge needs to be replaced. The displa y on the control panel shows the warning message, “[T oner Empty]” and the machine stops printing.
M AINTENANCE 8 .9 8 Setting Notify Toner Option If you set the "Notify T oner" menu option to "On", y our machine automatically sends a fax to y our service compan y or the dealer to notify them. The fax number is preset b y your dealer when you bought your machine.

A PPENDIX A.2 Installing an Optional Tray Y ou can increase the paper handling capacity of your machine by installing an optional T ray 2. This tr ay holds 250 sheets of paper . 1 T urn the machine off and unplug all cables from the machine. 2 R emove the packing material from the tr ay and remove the tape fixing the interface cable to the tr ay .
