G ETTING S TARTED 1 .2 Setting Up Your Machine Unpacking Remo ve the machine and all accessories from the packing carton. Mak e sure that the machine has been pack ed with the following items. If there is a missing item, contact the retailer where y ou bought the machine: N OTES : • Components may differ from one country to another .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .3 1 Remo ve the packing tape from the front, back and sides of the machine. Selecting a Location Select a level, stable place with adequate space for air circulation. Allow extra space for opening co vers and tra ys. The area should be well-ventilated and aw ay from direct sunlight or sources of heat, cold and humidity .

G ETTING S TARTED 1 .7 1 Installing the Toner Cartridge 1 Open the front cover . 2 Remo ve the starter toner cartridge from its bag. Gently roll the cartridge 5 or 6 times to distribute the toner ev enly inside the cartridge. Thoroughly rolling the cartridge will assure the maximum copies per cartridge.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .8 Loading Paper Y ou can load approximately 250 sheets. T o load a stack of Letter-sized paper: 1 Pull open the paper tr ay and remove it from the machine. 2 Push down on the pressure plate until it locks into place. 3 F an the edges of the paper stack to separ ate the pages.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .9 1 Changing the Paper Size in the Paper Tray T o load longer sizes of paper , such as Legal-sized paper , you need to adjust the paper guides to extend the paper tr ay . 1 After pressing and unlatching the guide lock, slide the paper length guide out completely to extend the paper tr ay to its full length.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .10 Connecting the Telephone Line 1 Plug the telephone line cord into the LINE jack and the other end into the wall jack. 2 T o connect a telephone and/or answering machine to y our machine, plug the cord of your extension phone or answering machine into the EXT jack.

G ETTING S TARTED 1 .12 Setting Up the Machine System Changing the Display Language T o change the language that displays on the display of the control panel, follow these steps: 1 Press Menu until “Machine Setup” appears on the top line of the display .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .13 1 Entering Characters Using the Number Keypad As you perform v arious tasks, you may need to enter names and numbers. For example, when y ou set up your machine, you enter y our name or your company’ s name and telephone number .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .14 Setting the Date and Time The current date and time are shown on the displa y when your machine is on and ready to work. All of your faxes will hav e the date and time printed on them. N OTE : If power to the machine is cut off , y ou need to reset the correct time and date once the power is restored.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .15 1 Setting the Paper Type and Size After loading paper in the paper tr ay (T ray 1), you need to set the paper type and size using the control panel buttons. 1 Press Menu . The display shows “P aper Setting” on the top line and the first menu item, “Paper T ype, ” on the bottom line.
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .16 Setting Sounds Y ou can control the following sounds: • Ringer: adjusts the ringer volume. • Key Sound : With this option set to “On, ” a key tone sounds each time a key is pressed. • Alarm Sound: turns the alarm sound on or off .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .17 1 Using the Save Modes Toner Save Mode T oner Save mode allows your machine to use less toner on each page. Activating this mode extends the life of the toner cartridge longer than normal, but it reduces the print quality . T o turn the toner save mode on or off , press Toner Save .
G ETTING S TARTED 1 .18 Power Save Mode Power Save mode allows y our machine to reduce power consumption when it is not in actual use. Y ou can turn this mode on b y selecting the length of time for which the machine waits after a job is printed before it switches to a reduced power state.

B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .2 Sending a Fax Preparing a Document Using the ADF (Automatic Document F eeder), you can load up to 50 documents for one job. When you use the ADF : • Do not load documents smaller than 142 x 148 mm or larger than 216 x 356 mm.
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .3 2 3 Adjust the document guides to the document siz e. 4 Adjust the document resolution,. See the following section. Adjusting the Document Resolution The default document settings produce good results when setting t ypical text based documents.

B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .5 2 Confirming a Transmission When the last page of your document has been sent successfully , the machine beeps and returns to Standby Mode. When something goes wrong while sending y our fax, an error message appears on the display .
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .6 Receiving a Fax About the Receiving Modes • In Fax mode, the machine answers an incoming fax call and immediately goes into the fax reception mode.
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .7 2 Receiving Automatically in Fax Mode Y our machine is preset to F ax mode at the factory . If you have changed the receiving mode, take the following steps to receiv e faxes automatically: 1 Press Receive Mode . 2 Press and hold Receive Mode until “F ax” displays on the bottom line.
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .8 N OTES : • When you have set y our machine to Ans/F ax mode and your answering machine is switched off or no answering machine is connected to the EXT jack, your machine automatically goes into F ax mode after a predefined number of rings.
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .9 2 T o set up the DRPD mode: 1 Press Menu until “F ax Setup” appears on the top line of the displa y . 2 Press the scroll button ( ➛ or ❿ ) until you see “DRPD Mode” on the bottom line and press Enter . 3 When “Set” displays on the bottom line, press Enter .
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .10 Making a Copy Loading Paper for Copying The instructions for loading print materials into the paper tr ay are the same whether you are faxing or copying.
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .11 2 3 Open the rear cover to use the rear output slot. 4 After copying, close the rear cov er . Setting the Paper Type and Size for the Manual Feeder After loading paper in the manual feeder , y ou need to set the correct paper type and size using the control panel buttons.
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .12 Setting Copy Options The buttons on the control panel let y ou make all the basic copy options; darkness, document type, copy size and number of copies. Set the following options for the current cop y job before pressing Start Copy/Fax to make copies.
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .13 2 Reduced/Enlarged Copying Using the Reduce/Enlarge button, y ou can reduce or enlarge the size of a copied image from 50 % to 200 %. T o select from the predefined copy sizes: 1 Press Reduce/Enlarge . The default setting appears on the bottom line of the displa y .
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .14 Setting the Time Out Option Y ou can set the time the machine w aits before it restores the default copy settings, if you do not start copying after changing them on the control panel. 1 Press Menu on the control panel until “Copy Setup” appears on the top line of the display .
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .15 2 Automatic Dialing One-touch Dialing The 20 one-touch buttons on the control panel lets y ou store frequently- used fax numbers and enables you to dial a number automatically with a touch of a button. Using the Shift button, you can store up to 40 fax numbers on the one- touch buttons.
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .16 Speed Dialing Y ou can store up to 150 frequently dialed numbers in one, two or three-digit speed dial locations (0-149). Storing a Number for Speed Dialing 1 Press Phone Book . 2 Press Phone Book or the scroll button ( ➛ or ❿ ) to display “Store&Edit” on the bottom line of the displa y .
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .17 2 Group Dialing If you frequently send the same document to sev er al destinations, you can create a group of these destinations and set them under a one or two-digit group dial location. This enables y ou to use a group dial number setting to send the same document to all the destinations within the group .
B ASIC F UNCTIONS 2 .18 Editing Group Dial Numbers Y ou can delete a specific speed dial number from a selected group or add a new number to the selected group . 1 Press Phone Book . 2 Press Phone Book or the scroll button ( ➛ or ❿ ) to display “Store&Edit” on the bottom line of the displa y .

A DVANCED F AX 3 .2 Sending Broadcasting Faxes Using the Broadcasting button on the control panel, y ou can use the broadcasting fax feature, which allows y ou to send a document to multiple locations. Documents are automatically stored in memory and sent to a remote station.
A DVANCED F AX 3 .3 3 Sending a Delayed Fax Y ou can set y our machine to send a fax at a later time when you will not be present. 1 Load the document(s) face down into the ADF . For details about loading a document, see page 2.2. 2 Adjust the document resolution to suit y our fax needs.
A DVANCED F AX 3 .4 Sending a Priority Fax Using the Priorit y F ax feature, a high priorit y document can be sent ahead of reserved oper ations. The document is scanned into memory and transmitted when the current oper ation is finished. In addition, the priority transmission interrupts a broadcast oper ation between stations (i.
A DVANCED F AX 3 .5 3 Polling a Remote Machine Polling is used when one fax machine requests another to send a document. This is useful when the person with the original document to be sent is not in the office. The person who wants to receiv e the document calls the machine holding it and requests that the document be sent.
A DVANCED F AX 3 .6 Adding Documents to a Scheduled Fax Y ou can add documents to the dela yed tr ansmission previously reserv ed in your machine’ s memory . 1 Load the document(s) face down into the ADF . For details about loading a document, see page 2.

A DDITIONAL F EATURES 4 .2 Using Secure Receiving Mode Y ou may need to prevent your received fax es from being accessed by unauthorized people. Y ou can turn on Secure Receiving mode to restrict the printing out all of received faxes when the machine is unattended.
A DDITIONAL F EATURES 4 .3 4 Printing Reports Y our machine can print reports containing useful information. The following reports are av ailable: Phonebook List This list shows all of the numbers currently stored in the machine’ s memory as speed dial and group dial numbers.

A DDITIONAL F EATURES 4 .5 4 Advanced Fax Setting Options Option Description Send Forw ard Y ou can set the machine to always forward all of the outgoing faxes to a specified destination, in addition to the fax numbers you entered. Select Off to turn this feature off .
A DDITIONAL F EATURES 4 .6 Stamp RCV Name This option allows the machine to automatically print the page number and the date and time of the reception at the bottom of each page of a received document. Select Off to turn this feature off . Select On to turn this feature on.
5 M AINTENANCE This chapter provides information for maintaining your machine and the toner cartridge. This chapter includes: • Clearing the Memory • Adjusting Shading • Cleaning Your Machine .
M AINTENANCE 5 .2 Clearing the Memory Y ou can selectively clear information stored in your machine’ s memory . 1 Press Menu on the control panel until “Maintenance ” appears on the top line of the display . 2 Press the scroll button ( ➛ or ❿ ) until y ou see “Clear Memory” on the bottom line and press Enter .
M AINTENANCE 5 .3 5 Adjusting Shading When the scan unit becomes dirty , it can alter the shading value. If y our copy has black lines or is blurred, adjust the shading setting. 1 Load a sheet of white paper into the ADF . 2 Press Menu on the control panel until “Maintenance ” appears on the top line of the display .
M AINTENANCE 5 .4 3 With a dry lint-free cloth, wipe a way an y dust and spilled toner from the toner cartridge area and the toner cartridge ca vity . C AUTION : T o prevent damage to the toner cartridge, do not expose it to light for more than a few minutes.
M AINTENANCE 5 .5 5 Maintaining the Toner Cartridge Toner Cartridge Storage T o get the most from the toner cartridge, keep the following guidelines in mind: • Do not remove the toner cartridge from its package until it ’s ready to use. • Do not refill the toner cartridge.
M AINTENANCE 5 .6 Replacing the Toner Cartridge When the toner eventually runs out, only blank pages print when a print job is sent or when a fax is receiv ed. At this stage, the toner cartridge needs to be replaced. The display on the control panel shows the w arning message, “[T oner Empty]” and the machine stops printing.
M AINTENANCE 5 .7 5 Ignoring the Toner Empty Message When the toner cartridge is empty , the machine shows a “[T oner Empty]” message and stops printing. Y ou can set the machine to ignore the message when it displays and to continue printing the pages.
M AINTENANCE 5 .8 Replacing the ADF Rubber Pad Y ou can purchase an ADF rubber assembly from a Samsung dealer or the retailer where you bought y our machine. 1 Open the control panel by gripping its top and pulling on it. 2 Squeeze the tab at the bottom of the ADF rubber assembly and then pull it out.

T ROUBLESHOOTING 6 .2 Clearing Document Jams When a document jams while it passes through the ADF (A utomatic Document F eeder), “[Document Jam]” appears on the display . 1 Remo ve the remaining documents from the ADF . 2 Pull the jammed document gently out of the ADF .
T ROUBLESHOOTING 6 .3 6 Clearing Paper Jams When a paper jam occurs, “P aper Jam” appears on the displa y . R efer to the table below to locate and clear the paper jam. T o avoid tearing the paper , pull the jammed paper out gently and slowly . Follow the steps on the following sections to clear the jam.
T ROUBLESHOOTING 6 .4 In Tray 2 1 Open and close the front co ver . The jammed paper automatically exits the machine. If the paper does not exit, continue to step 2. 2 Pull T ray 2 open. 3 Remo ve the jammed paper by gently pulling it str aight out. 4 Insert the paper tra y into the machine until it snaps into place.
T ROUBLESHOOTING 6 .5 6 4 Remo ve the jammed paper by gently pulling it str aight out. 5 Close the rear cover . 6 Open and close the front cov er to resume printing. In the Fuser Area or Around the Toner Cartridge N OTE : The fuser area is hot. T ake care when remo ving paper from the machine.
T ROUBLESHOOTING 6 .6 In the Manual Feeder “ ” appears on the display when y ou try to print using the manual feeder and the machine does not detect paper , due to no paper or improper paper loading. The error message may also occur when the paper is not properly fed into the machine through the manual feeder .
T ROUBLESHOOTING 6 .7 6 Clearing LCD Error Messages Messages appear on the display of the control panel to indicate the machine’ s status or errors. R efer to the following table to understand the messages and correct the problem, if necessary . Messages and their meanings are listed in alphabetical order .
T ROUBLESHOOTING 6 .8 Load Document Y ou have attempted to set up a copy or fax oper ation with no document loaded. Load a document and try again. Low Heat Error There is a problem in the fuser unit. Unplug the power cord and plug it back in. If the problem persists, please contact a service representative.
T ROUBLESHOOTING 6 .9 6 [Retry R edial?] The machine is waiting for a specified time interv al to redial a previously busy station. Y ou can press Enter to immediately redial, or Stop/Clear to cancel the redial operation. [Stop Pressed] The Stop/Clear button is pressed during a copy or fax operation.

A .2 Installing an Optional Tray Y ou can increase the paper handling capacit y of y our machine by installing an optional T ray 2. This tra y holds 250 sheets of paper . 1 T urn the machine off and unplug all cords from the machine. 2 Remo ve the packing material from the tr ay and remo ve the tape fixing the interface cable to the tr ay .

A .6 Paper Specifications Overview Y our machine accepts a variety of print materials, such as cut -sheet paper , including up to 100 % recycled fiber content paper , labels and transparencies. Properties, such as weight, composition, grain and moisture content, are important factors affecting the machine’ s performance and the output quality .
A .7 A Guidelines for Using Paper For best results, use con ventional 75 g/m 2 (20 lb) paper . Ensure that the paper is of good quality , and free of cuts, nicks, tears, spots, loose particles, dust, wrinkles, v oids, and curled or bent edges.
A .8 Paper Storage Environment Paper stor age environmental conditions directly affect the feed oper ation. Ideally , the machine and paper stor age environment should be at or near room temper ature, and not too dry or humid. R emember that paper is hygroscopic; it absorbs and loses moisture r apidly .
