G ETTING S TARTED 2.2 Setting Up Your Machine Unpacking 1 Remo ve the machine and al l accessories from the packing carton. Make sure that the machine has been packed with the foll ow ing it em s: N OTES : • Compon ents m ay diffe r fro m countr y to country .
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.3 2 Remo ve the packing ta pe from the front, back, a nd sides of the machine. 3 Gently pull the scan lock label until it comes awa y from the machine. This w ill pull the sc anner locking switch into t he FORWARD (Unlocked) position automatically .
G ETTING S TARTED 2.4 Selecting a Lo cation Select a level , stable pla ce with ad equate space for air circulation. Allow extra space for opening door s and trays. The area should be w ell-ventilated and away f rom direc t sunlig ht or sources of heat, cold, and humidity .
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.5 Installing the Toner Cartridge 1 Open the front door . 2 R emove the st arter toner cartrid ge from its bag. Gently ro ll the cartridge 5 or 6 times to distribute the toner . Thoroughly roll ing the cartri dge will ass ure maximum copies per cartr idge.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.6 3 Hold the toner cartridge by the handle. Slowly insert the cartridge into th e opening in the mac hine. T a bs on the sides of the cartridge and corr esponding grooves within the machine will guide the cartridge into the correct position until it locks into place completely .
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.7 Loading Pa per The paper tra y can hold a maximum of 250 sheets of 20 lb plain paper . 1 Pull open the paper tray and remov e it from the machine. 2 F an the edges of the pa per stack to separate the pages. Then tap the stac k on a f lat s urface to ev en it u p.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.8 4 Pa y attention to the paper limit mark on b oth inside walls of the tray . P a per overloading m ay cause paper jams. 5 Insert and slide the pa per tray back into the machine. N OTE : After you lo ad pap er , you nee d to set up your machine fo r the paper t y pe and siz e you lo aded.
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.9 Changing the Size of the Paper in the Paper Tray T o load longer sizes of paper , su ch as Legal-sized pa per , you need to adjust the paper guides to extend the paper tray . 1 After pressing and unlatching the guid e lock, slide the paper length guide out comple tely to extend the paper tray to its full length.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.10 3 Squeeze the width guide, as shown and slide it to the stack of paper until it lightly touches the side of the stack. N OTES : • Do not push the paper w idth gu ide far e nough to cause the materials to warp. • If y ou do not adjus t the paper wi dth guide, it may caus e paper jams.
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.11 Making Connections 1 Plug one end of the supplied telephon e line cord into the LINE jack on the machine and the other end into the wall jack. If you want to use your ma chine to receive both faxes and voice ca lls, you will nee d to connect a te lephone and/or answering machine to your machine.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.12 UK users should plug the cord of the extension phone into the supplied T AM lead and p lug the cord of the T AM lead int o th e EXT jack on the back of your machine. N OTES : • Use t he T AM le ad and the telephon e line cord sup plied with yo ur machine.
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.13 If you want to use a parallel printer cable, purchase only an IEEE-1284 compliant parallel cable and connect it to the para llel connector on your ma chine. Push the metal clips down to fit inside th e notches on the cable p lug.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.14 Turning the Machine On 1 Plug one end of the supplied thr ee-pronged electrical cord into the AC socket on the machine a nd the other end into a properly grounded AC outlet. 2 Press the power switch to turn the machine on. “W a rming Up Please W a it” appe ars on the display indicat ing that the machine is now on.
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.15 Setting Up the Machine System Changing the Display Language T o cha nge the language that displays on the control panel, follow these steps: 1 Pres s Menu until “Machine Setup” appears on the top line of the display . 2 Pres s the scroll button ( or ) until “Language” appea rs on the bottom line of the display .
G ETTING S TARTED 2.16 Setting the Machine ID In some countries, you are required by law to indicate your fax number on any fax you send. The Machine ID , contai ning your telephone number and name (or company name), wi ll be printed at the top of each page sent from your machine.
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.17 Entering Characters U sing the Number Keypad As you perform v arious tasks, you need to enter names and numbers. For example, when you set up your machine, y ou enter your name (or your compan y’ s name) and telephone number .
G ETTING S TARTED 2.18 Keypa d Letter s and Numbers Changing Numbers o r Name s If you make a mista ke while entering a number or name, press the button to delete th e last digit or character .
2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.19 Setting the Date and Time The curre nt date a nd time a re shown on the display when your machine is on and ready to work. This machine, al l of your faxes will have the date and time printed on them. N OTE : When tu rning on the machin e after turn ing it off for a lo ng time , you need to reset d ate and time.
G ETTING S TARTED 2.20 Changing the Clo ck Mode Y ou can set your machine to displ ay the current time using either a 12-hour or 24-hour format. 1 Pres s Menu until “Machine Setup” appears on the top line of the display . 2 Press the scroll button ( or ) until you see “Clock Mode” on the bottom line and press Enter .

2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.23 Using the Save Modes Toner Save Mode T oner Save mode allows your machine t o use less t oner on each page. Activating this mode extend s the life of the toner cartridge beyond what one w ould experience in the nor mal mode, but it reduces pr int quality .

2 G ETTING S TARTED 2.25 Scan Lamp Sav e Mode Scan Lamp Save mode allows you to save the scan lamp . The scan lamp under the docum ent glass automatica lly turns off when it is not in actual use to reduce power consumption and extend the life of the lamp.

G ETTING S TARTED 2.46 The Scan Settings Tab Click the Scan Settings tab to configure the scan desti nation list that appe ars on the control panel disp lay when you press Scan-to on the control panel. Using the destination list, you can select a software program that an image can be sca nned to.

P APER H ANDLING 3.2 Selecting Pri nt Materials Y ou can print o n a variety of print materials, su ch as plain paper , envelopes, labels, tr a nsparencies, and etc.. Always use print materials that mee t the guidelines for use with this machine. See “Paper Specifications” on page D .
3 P APER H ANDLING 3.3 Guidelines f or Pape r and Special Ma terials When selecting or loading paper , envelopes, or other special material, keep these guidelines in mind: • Always use paper and other ma terials that conform with the specifications liste d under “Pape r Specifications” on page D .
P APER H ANDLING 3.4 - Do not leav e them in the paper tr ay for long periods of time. Dust and dirt may acc umulate on the m, resulting in spotty printing. - T o avoid smudging caused by fi ngerprints, hand le them carefully . - T o avoid fadi ng, do not expose prin ted tr ans paren cies to prolonged s unlight.
3 P APER H ANDLING 3.5 The paper level indicator on the front of the paper tray shows the amount of paper cur rently left in the tray . When the tray is empty , the ind icator of the bar is co mpletely lowered. T o load pap er , p ull open the paper tray and lo ad paper w ith the side to be printed on face dow n.
P APER H ANDLING 3.6 In the Multipurpose Tra y The Multipurpos e tray can hold several sizes and types of print material, such as transparenci es, postcards, note car ds, and envelopes. It is useful for single page printing on letterhead or colored paper .

N OTES : • If en velopes jam wh ile printin g, try reducin g the number of envelop es in the Mul tipurp ose tray .
P APER H ANDLING 3.8 6 If you want the machine to stack the printed pages on the rear output slot, open the rear door to use the rear output slot. C AUTION : Make sure to open the rear output slot when you print on tr ansparencies . If not, they may tear whil e exiting t he machine.
3 P APER H ANDLING 3.9 3 Squeeze the width guide and adjust it to the width of the print material without bending it. 4 If you want the machine to stack the printed pages on the rear output slot, open the rear door to use the rear output slot. C AUTION : Make sure to open the rear output slot when you print on tr ansparencies .
P APER H ANDLING 3.10 Selecting an Output Location The machine has two output lo cations: the rear output slot (face up) and the front output tray (face down). T o use the front output tray , make sure that the rear door is closed. T o us e the rear output slot, open the rear door .
3 P APER H ANDLING 3.11 Printing to the Rear Ou tput Slot (Face up) Using the rear output slot, paper comes out of the machine face up. Printing from the Multipurp ose tray to the rear output slot provides a straight pape r path .

P RINTING T ASKS 4.2 Printing a D ocument in Windows The following procedure describes th e general steps required for printing from various Windows ap plications. The exact st eps for printing a doc ument may vary depending on the ap plication pro gra m yo u are u sin g.
4 P RINTING T ASKS 4.3 Canceling a Pri nt Job There are two ways to cancel a print job: T o sto p a print job from the control panel: Press the Stop/Clear button. Y our machine finishes printing the page that is moving through t he machine and deletes the rest of the p rint job.
P RINTING T ASKS 4.4 Printer Settings Y ou can use the Samsung SCX -4x20 Series printer properties window , which allows y ou to access al l of the printer options you need when using your machine. When the printer properties are displayed, you can review an d change whatev er settings are needed for your print job.
4 P RINTING T ASKS 4.5 Layout tab The Layout tab provides options to adj ust how the document appears on the pr inted page. The Layout Op tions includes Multiple Pages per Sid e and Poster . See page 4.2 for more information on acce ssing printer properties.
