Getting Started 4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to star t using y our SCH-R880 phone by activating your service, setting up your Voicemail, or getti ng an understanding of how this manual is put together .
5 Char ging the Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechar geable standard Li-Ion batter y . Only use Samsung-approved ch ar ging devices and batteries. Samsung accessories are designed to maximize ba tter y life. Use of other accessories may inv alid ate your warranty and may cause damage.
Getting Started 6 Low batt er y i ndi cator The battery indica tor ( ) in the upper -right side of the display indicates power level. Monitor the battery strength and ensure your battery is adequately charged. • F ive bars ( ) indicate a full charge.

15 Changi ng th e Scr een Orie ntati on The R880 can automatically cha nge the orientation of some screens. The R880’ s built-in accele rometer senses movement and changes a screen’ s orienta tio n from portrait to landscape. Note: Some screens, especially those for applications and games, do not respond to the accelerometer .
Understanding Y our Phone 1 6 Home Scr een Panels The Home screen has three pan e ls. The Center panel appears when you pres s the Home key ( ). T o acce ss the Left panel, s wipe a cross the Home screen, left to right. T o access the Right panel, swip e across the Home screen, right to left.
17 • Speech-to-T ext — Lets you enter w ords and characters by s peaking them into your phone’ s microphone. • Smiley — Lets you enter “smiley” characters (emoticons) by touching shortcut buttons. • AL T — Lets you enter mathematic, currency , and other special symbols .

Understanding Y our Phone 2 0 Menu Naviga tion There are two ways to navigate through a menu: • Using your finger . • Using the T ouchpad. Selecting M en u Items Using y our Fing er s As you navigate through the menu, you activat e menu option s by touching the onscreen ent ry .
21 Main Menu Y ou access the Main Menu from the Home screen. Just touch . The Main Menu slides up from the bottom of the screen. Add to Ho me screen Menu Lets you add Shortcuts , Widgets , and/or Folders to a Home screen panel. Tip : Y ou can also launch the Add to Home Screen menu by touching and holding an empty place on a Home screen panel.
Understanding Y our Phone 2 2 Notifications Menu Shows you the network status and explains any notificati on icon s appearing in the to p left corner of the Home screen. Sett ings Menu Lets y ou e nable/ disable communications features (such as, voice, Wi-F i, and Bluetooth communications).

Call Functions 24 V oice Digit Di aling Y our phone includes a voice reco gnition system th at you can use to place c alls. 1. T o uch ➔ ➔ V oice Control ( ). Tip : Fo r easier access to Voice Control, you can place a Shortcut to it on a Home screen panel.
25 Call Log Dialing Y our phone stores records of your calls (incoming and outgoing). Y ou can use these records to place calls. 1. From the Home screen, touch ➔ Call log . The Call log screen appears in the disp lay . 2. Scroll through the Call Log and locate the desired call.
Call Functions 26 Tip : Voice Dialing T ips: Wait for the beep before speaking. Speak clearly at a normal volume, as if you were talking to someone on the phone. When saying a name, say the first name then the last name. Speak c learly and say th e name of a pe rson in the Contacts list, first name foll owed by last name.
27 Ans wering a Call Y our phone noti fies you of a call in the follo wing ways: • A ring tone sounds and/or yo ur phone vibrates (Y our phone provides eight ring volume setting s , and/or different ring types to distinguish callers.
Call Functions 28 T hr ee Way Calling Three W ay Callin g lets you ad d a thrid party to yo ur current call. 1. During a call, touch ➔ Add call . The Dialer screen a ppears in t he display , and your existing call is pla ced on hol d. 2. Enter a number or select a Contact and touch .

Call Functions 30 Ho w R oam ing W orks Roam Opti on lets you set roami ng prefere nces if yo u move in and out of your home n etwork. The f ollowing roaming options are avai lable: • Home On ly — Y our phone is available for normal operation only in the designated coverage area.
31 Section 4: Contacts List This section explains how to ma nage your daily contacts by storing their name and number in y our Contacts. Contacts entries are sorted by name. Y our Contacts List Y our Contacts list can store more than 2000 entries, with each contact having up to five associated phone numbers, an Email add ress, and a pi cture ID.
Contacts List 32 Adding a New Contact 1. Fr om the Contacts list, touch ➔ New contact . The Edit contact screen a ppears in t he display . 2. T o uch the Given name field. With the ph one c losed a nd upright, a virtual QWE RTY keypad a ppears at the bottom of the screen.
33 2. T ouch the call you just en ded. The following options appear in the display: • Call information — T ype of call; call time, day , and date; and lengt h of call . • Call again — Dial t his n umber . • Send text mes sage — Send a message to this number .

Messaging 40 Section 5: Messaging This section explains ho w to send or receive different types of messages. This section also describes the features and functionali ty associated wi th the various types of messaging.

Playing Music and Videos 5 2 Section 7: Playing Music and Videos Loading Media Files Y ou can lo ad media fil es (MP3 or WMA music and/or MP4 or 3GP video) to yo ur phone over the air or using a Perso nal Computer . Dow nloading Ov er the Air 䊳 Save music obtained using the Browser or from the Market to the microSD or microSDHC Memory Card.

Apps (Applications) 54 Section 8: Apps (A pplicat ions) Y our R880 phone incl udes a number of useful Apps and offers access to the Android Market, where you can purchase and download still more A pps. Network-Dependent A pps T o launch many of the Apps loaded on your R880, such as the Maps , your phone must ha ve network access.
55 Launc hing an App 1. From the Home screen, touch . The Apps menu appears i n the display . 2. Swipe up or down across the screen to scroll the menu and find a particular App . 3. Connections 58 Section 9: Connections This section explains ho w to setup your pho nes network, Wi-F i (Wireles s Fide lity), Blueto oth, and VPN (Vir tual Private Net work) connections. Note: Use of these Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and/or VPN wireless connections can increase the drain on your R880’ s batter y , shortening your usage time.
