Getting Started 5 Activating your de vice If you purchased your de vice at a s tore, it is acti vated and ready to use. If you received a new device by mail, it ma y need to be activated before you can use it. T o activate your devi ce, choose from the follo wing: • Visit your wireless prov ider’ s store.
6 Charging the Ba tter y Y our device comes with a Wall /USB Charger (Outle t Connector , Charging Head and USB cable) to charge your device from any standard 120/220 V AC outlet. Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time.

8 T ask Mana ger Y our device can run applications simultaneously , with some applications running in the background. Use T ask Manager to see which applications are running on your device, and to end running applicat ions to extend battery life.
Getting Started 9 Memo r y Card Y our device support s remova ble microSD™ or microSDHC™ memor y cards, for storage of mu sic, pictures, vi deos, and other files. Note: Y ou can only store music files that you own (from a CD or purchased with the device) on a memory card.
10 Securing Y our Device By default, the device locks automat ically when the scre en times out, or you can lock it manually . Y ou can un lock the device using one of the default Unlock screens, or for increa sed security , use a personal screen unlock pattern.

Note: Unless stated otherwise, instructions in this User Manual start with the device unlocked, at the Home screen. 1. Status Bar : Presents icons to show noti fications, network status, battery power , and conne ction details.
16 Extended Home S creen The Home screen consist s of the Hom e panel, plus 4 panels that extend beyond the display width to provide more space for adding shortcuts, widge ts and fo lders. 24 Applications The Applicat ions screen holds all applications on your wireless device. Applications th a t you download and install from th e Android Market or from th e web are also added to the Applications screen. Y ou can place shortcuts to applic ations on the Home screen, for quick access to the ap plication.
Understanding Y our Device 2 5 Daily Briefing : Monitor weather , fi nancial info rmation, news and your sc hedule, from one a pplication. A shortcut to Daily Briefing ap pears on the Home screen by default. See “Daily Br iefing” on page 77. Digital Frame : Display a slid eshow of pictures or a clock, and play mu sic.
26 Music : Play music stored on a n optional installed memory card. By default, a shortcut to Music appears on the Home screen. For more in formation, see “Music” on page 55. My Files : Find, v iew and manage files stored on an optional instal led me mory card.
Contacts and Accounts 27 Section 3: Contacts and Accounts This section explains how to manage cont acts and accounts. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, information on your device is updated with any information that c ha nges in your accounts.
28 Setting Up a Facebook account Note: Y ou must register your device with your social networking site before using the device to access the network. 1. From a Home screen, touch Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Accounts and sync ➔ Add account ➔ Facebook . 2.

30 J oi ned Cont acts Y our device can synchronize wi th multiple accoun ts, including Google and Corporate Exchang e, plus the soci al networking sites Fa cebook, T witter , and MySpace. When you synchron ize contacts from these accounts with your device, you may have multiple contact records for one person.
Contacts and Accounts 31 Sendin g Namecar ds Sending a Namecar d (vCard) Y ou can send contact namecards as a vCards via Bl uetooth to other Bluetooth devices, or via Em ail or Gmail as an attachme nt. Note: Not all Bluetooth devices will accept contacts, and not all devices support transfers of multiple contacts.

Contacts and Accounts 33 Groups Assign contacts to Gro ups to make searching for contacts faster , or to quickly send messages to group members. Y ou can also assign a ringtone to a group, to easily recognize incoming calls from group members. Cre ating a New G roup 1.

Entering T ext 35 Section 4: Entering T ext This section describes how to en ter words, letters, punctuation and numbers when you need to enter text. Vir tual QWERTY Keyboard Y our device uses a virt ual QWERTY keyboard for text entry .
36 Entering T ext Using Swype Swype is a new way to ente r text on touch screens. Inste ad of touching each key , use your finger to trace over ea ch letter of a word. For each word, place your fing er on the first letter and gl ide to the subsequent letters, li fting on the last letter .

38 Entering T ext Using the Samsung K eypad The Samsung Keypad is a cust om virtual QWER TY keyboard, featuring predictive text. Input characters by tapping the on- screen keys with your finge r , or use speech recognition. As you enter characters, predic tive text matches your key touches to common words and displays them.
Messaging 39 Section 5: Messaging This section describes how to send and receive messages, and other features associated with messaging. Types of Messages Y our device supports th ese types of messages: • Te x t m e s s a g e s : Send and receive simple me ssages containing text to other mobile devices or em ail addresses (also known as SMS).

Thr eaded messages allow you to se e all the me ssage s you exchanged with a contact or other reci pient, as a conver sation, with the latest message displayed first.
42 Gmail Send and receive emai ls via Gmail, Google’ s web-based email. 䊳 From a Home screen, select Applicatio ns ➔ Gmail . Setti ng Up Y o ur Gmail Account The first time you launch Gmail, yo ur device will prompt you to set up your Google account.

Web an d Social Networking 5 3 Places Google Plac es uses your lo cation to help you find nearby destinations, such as restaurants, ba rs, hotels, attractions, A TMs and gas stations, or you can enter a location. 1. From a Home screen, touch Applications ➔ Places .
54 V oice Sear c h Voice Search offers voice- activated Google sea rches. Tip : Voice Search is also available on the Google Search widget, which appears on the Home screen by default. 1. From a Home screen, touch Applications ➔ V oice Search . 2. Voice Search uses your location to improve search results and offer other ser vices.
Music 55 Section 7: Music Music Music plays songs from an installed me mory card. Tip : A shortcut to Music appears on the Home screen by default. 1. From a Home screen, touch Music . 2. Music scans your memory card and displays songs on the Songs , Playlists , Albums , Arti sts , or Genres tabs.

60 Camcorder Options Configure the camcorder . 䊳 While in Camcorde r mode, touch the Options tab: • Recording mode : Choose a recordin g mode, from: – Normal : Record a video of any length. – Limit for M MS : Record a video u p to 950Kb, suitable for sending in a multimedia message.

Connections 69 Pairing w ith a Bluetooth De vice Search for a Bl uetooth devic e a nd pair with it, to exchange information between your devi ce and the target dev ice. Tip : After pairing, your device and the target device will recognize each other and exchange information without having to enter a passcode or PIN.

88 Bluetooth settings Use Bluetooth setti ngs to manage Blueto oth connections, set your device’ s name, and control your de vice’ s visibility . Bluetooth pr ofiles Profiles are speci fications for se rvices supported by individual devices to improve the ability of diff erent devices to wo rk together .

90 Mobile netw or ks Set options for network se lect ion and data services while roaming. Important!: Depending on your service plan, changes you make to Mobile Networks settings may incur extra charges. Consult your wireless provider for more information.
Settings 91 Dial up netw or king Connect to data services via dial-up networks. Note: Y ou cannot use other data ser vices while Dial up networking is enabled. 1. From a Home screen, touch Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Wireless and network . 2. T ouc h Dial up networking to enable or disable dial-up networking.
92 Vo l u m e Set the volume level for all types of sounds. Note: Y ou can only set volume when Silent Mode is disabled. 1. From a Home screen, touch Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Sound settings ➔ V olume . 2. T ouch and drag the sliders to set: • Media vo lume : Playback of music, videos and other multimedia content.
Settings 93 Screen lock sounds When enabled, tones play wh en unlocking and locking the screen. 1. From a Home screen, touch Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Sound settings . 2. T ouc h Screen lock sounds to enable or disable tones. When enabled, a check ma rk appears in the chec k box.
94 Black col or densi ty Set the densi ty for display of t he color black. Black color den sity can be used to enh ance picture depth. 1.
