11 1.7 Safety Precautions Notice: Before install your PCA-6189 into a chassis, make sure that all components on both sides of the CPU card do not touc h any metal parts, especially the chassis wall and add-on card at the adjacent slot. Warning! Always completely disconnect the power cord from your chassis whenever you work with the hardware.
PCA-6189 User’s Manual 12 1.8 Jumper Setti ngs This section provides instru ctions on how to configure your single board computer by setting the jumpers. It also includes the single board com- puter's default settings and your options for each jumper .
13 1.9 System Memory The PCA-6189 has two so ckets for 184-pin dual inline memory m odules (DIMMs). All these sockets use 2.5 V unbuffered double data rate synchronous DRAMs (DDR SDRAM).
PCA-6189 User’s Manual 14 1.9.1 CPU FSB and memory speed The PCA-6189 can accept DDR SDRAM memory chips without parity . Also note: The PCA-6189 accepts PC2100 (DD R266), PC2700 (DDR 333) and DDR SDRAM, depending on the CPU front side bus frequency (FSB).

PCA-6189 User’s Manual 18 Chapter 2 Connecting Peripherals 2.1 Introduction Y ou can access most of the connectors fr om the top of the board while it is installed i n the chassis. If you have a number of card s installed or have a packed chassis, you may need to pa rtially remove the card to make all the connections.
19 Chapter 2 Connect the first hard drive to the oth er end of the cable. Wire 1 on the cable should also co nnect to pin 1 on the hard drive connector, which is labeled on the drive circuit board. Check the documentation that came with the drive fo r more informati on.
PCA-6189 User’s Manual 20 2.4 Parallel Port (CN4) The parallel port is normally used to connect th e single board computer to a printer . The PCA-6189 includes an onboard parallel port, accessed through a 26-pin flat-cable connector, CN4. The card comes with an adapter cable which lets you use a tr aditional DB-25 connector .
21 Chapter 2 2.5 USB Port s CN6, CN31, and CN32 The PCA-6189 provides up to four ports for the USB (Univ ersal Serial Bus) interface, which gives complet e Plug & Play and hot swapping for up to 127 external devices.The US B interface complies with USB Speci- fication Rev .
PCA-6189 User’s Manual 22 2.6 VGA Connector CN7 The PCA-6189 includes a VGA interface that can drive conventional CR T displays. CN7 is a standard 15-pin D-SUB connector commonly used for VGA. Pin assi gnments for CR T connector CN7 are detailed in Appendix B.
23 Chapter 2 2.8 DVI connector VCN3 The VCN3 provides a DVI interface th at supports DVI display . This con- nector should be used with a 20-pin DV I cable (p/n: 1 700000821) Pin assignments fo r the VCN3 are detailed in Ap pendix B.
PCA-6189 User’s Manual 24 2.10 Serial Port s (COM 1 : CN9; COM2 : CN10 ) The PCA-6189 offers two serial ports, CN9 as COM1 and CN10 as COM2. These ports can connect to seri al devices, such as a mouse or a printer , or to a communi cations network. The IRQ and address ranges for both ports are fixed.
25 Chapter 2 2.12 External Keyboard Connector (CN12) In addition to the PS/2 mouse/keyb oard connector on the PCA-6189's rear plate, there is al so an extra onboard exte rnal keyboard connecto r . This gives system integrators greater flexibility in designing their sys- tems.
PCA-6189 User’s Manual 26 2.14 Front Panel Connector s (CN16, 17, 18, 19, 21&29) There are several extern al switches to monitor and control the PCA -6189 2.14.1 Power LED (CN16) CN16 is a 5-pin conn ector for the power on LED. Refer t o Appendix B for detailed information on the pin assignm ents.

29 Chapter 2 2.17 Serial A T A inte rface (SA0 and SA1) In addition to the two EIDE interfaces (up to f our devices), the PCA-6189 features high performance serial A T A interface (up to 150MB /s) which eases cabling to hard drives with thin and long cables.

This connector must be connected to the power supply , otherwise system might be unstable.

Th is type of inform ation is stored in battery-backed memory (CMOS RAM) so that it retains the setup info r- mation when the power is turned off.

35 Chapter 3 3.4.5 Quick Power On Self T est This setting allows the system to skip certain tests while boot ing. This will decrease the time need ed to boot the system. 3.4.6 First/Second/Third Boot Device The BIOS will load the OS with the devices in the sequence selected.

System : The system will not boot and access to setup will be denied if the correct password is not entered at the prompt.

PCA-6189 User’s Manual 38 3.5.4 DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay In order to improve performance, certa in space in memory is reserved for ISA cards. This memory must be map ped into the memo ry space below 16 MB. The choices are: 3 and 2. 3.5.5 DRAM RAS# Precharge This controls the idle clocks after issuing a precharge command to DRAM.
39 Chapter 3 3.5.12 AGP Aperture Size (MB) Use this setting to select the size of the Accelerated Gr aphics Port (AGP) aperture. The aperture is a portion of the PCI memory address range ded- icated to graphics memory address space. Host cycles that hit the aperture range are forwarded to the A GP without any translation.

Because each IDE device may have a dif ferent Mode timing (0, 1, 2, 3, 4), it is necessary for these to be independent.

However , the instal lation procedure varies with differ- ent operating systems. 71 Chapter 7 7.2 Underst anding SCSI SCSI (pronounced .scuzzy .) stands for Small Co mputer Systems Inter- face. SCSI is an industry standard computer interface for connecting SCSI devices to a common SCSI bus. A SCSI bus is an electrical pathway that consists of a SCSI interface installed in a computer and one or more SCSI devices.
PCA-6189 User’s Manual 72 • If you are booting your computer from a SC SI hard disk drive con- nected to the SCSI bus, the Boot SC SI ID setting in the SCSISelect utility must correspond to the SCSI ID of the device from which you are booting. By default, the Boot SCSI ID is set to 0.
