Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Charge the batt er y befor e using it for the first time . Use the charger to charge the batt er y . A computer can be also used t o charge the device b y connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.

By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.

Basics 20 Icon Meaning Error occurr ed or caution required Battery power level U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion.
Basics 21 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 22 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right. Exc essive shaking or impac t to the device ma y result in unintended inputs.
Basics 24 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio (when using the speaker).
Basics 25 Shaking • Shake the device to sear ch for Bluetooth devices . • Shake the device to updat e the list of emails or information from Y ahoo News, Y ahoo F inance, or Ac cuWea ther .
Basics 26 • Sync : Activate or deactivate aut o-syncing of applications. The av ailable options may vary depending on the region or ser vice pro vider . Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es.

Basics 35 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 36 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 38 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 39 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to C ontac ts . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls. T o filter a call log , tap → V iew by , and then select an option.
Communication 40 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the circle , or press and hold the headset button. T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, tap Rejec t call with message . T o create the rejection message, tap → Call settings → Set reject messages .

W eb & network 52 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then selec t one of the suggested keywords that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 53 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed. Select the device you wan t to pair with, and then acc ept the auto- generated passkey on both devices to c onfirm.
54 Media Music Pla yer Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music Play er on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding used.
Media 55 Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap Playlists , and then tap → Crea te playlist . Enter a title and tap OK . T ap Add music , select songs to include, and then tap Done . T o add the curren tly-playing song to a pla ylist, tap → Add t o playlist .
Media 56 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap the image on the preview scr een where the camera should focus . When the subject is in focus , the focus frame turns green. T ap to take the photo . Indicates which storage is in use. Switch between still and video mode.
Media 57 • Candlelight : Use this setting f or images of bright light against a dark background . • F irework : Use this setting f or high- contr ast scenes. • Backlight : Use this setting f or subjects with br ight lights behind them. • Night : Use this setting f or images taken in darker conditions.

Media 62 V iewing images Launching Galler y displays a vailable folders. When another application, such as Email , sav es an image, the do wnload folder is automa tically creat ed to contain the image . Likewise, capturing a screenshot automatically cr eates the Screenshots folder .
Media 63 • Rotate right : Rotate clockwise. • Crop : Resize the blue frame to cr op and save the image in it. • Set as : Set the image as a wallpaper or a contact image. • Buddy photo share : Send the image to a person whose face is tagged in the image .

T roubleshooting 98 Y our device fr eezes or has fatal errors If your device freez es or hangs, you may need t o close progr ams or reset the device t o regain functionalit y . If your device is fr ozen and unr esponsive , press and hold the P ower butt on for 8-10 seconds.
