Getting star ted 8 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . 1 T ur n the screw an ticlockwise with a coin or other objec t to unlock the back co ver , and then remov e the back cover .
Getting star ted 11 • Do not remov e the protective tape cov ering the antenna, as this can damage the antenna. • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card.
Getting star ted 12 Removing the SIM or USIM car d and battery 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Pull out the ba tter y . 3 Pull out the SIM or USIM car d.
Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Charge the batt er y befor e using it for the first time . Use the charger to charge the batt er y . A computer can be also used t o charge the device b y connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot.
Getting star ted 17 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Pull out the memory card.
Getting star ted 18 A ttaching a hand strap 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Slide a hand strap through the slot and hook it o ver the small projection. T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 19 • F ollow all posted warnings and directions from authorised personnel in ar eas where the use of wir eless devices is restricted, such as aer oplanes and hospitals. • Pr ess and hold the Po wer button and tap Fligh t mode to disable the wireless featur es.
Getting star ted 20 A djusting the volume Pr ess the Volume butt on up or down to adjust the ringtone volume , or to adjust the sound volume when pla ying music or video . S witching to silent mode Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Pr ess and hold the Volume butt on down until it switches to silent mode .
21 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 22 Icon Meaning Error occurr ed or caution required Battery power level U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices . Electrostatic discharges can cause the touch scr een to malfunc tion.
Basics 23 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 25 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right. Rotating the screen Many applications allo w display in either por trait or landscape orientation.
Basics 26 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio .
Basics 27 Shaking • Shake the device to sear ch for Bluetooth devices . • Shake the device to updat e the list of emails or information from Y ahoo News, Y ahoo F inance, or Ac cuWea ther .
Basics 28 • P ower saving : Activate or deactivate po wer-sa ving mode. • Sync : Activate or deactivate aut o-syncing of applications. The av ailable options may vary depending on the region or ser vice pro vider . Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es.
Basics 29 Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen. When the rubbish bin turns red, release it . Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel Pr ess the M enu button, and then tap Edit page → .
Basics 30 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 31 Rearranging applica tions Pr ess the M enu button, tap Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to a new location. T o move it to another panel , drag it to the side of the screen. Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience .

T o r eset help pop-ups if you have hidden them, tap Show help tip pop-ups , and then select items by ticking.
Basics 33 Entering upper case T ap befor e entering a charac ter . F or all caps, tap it twice. Changing language ke yboards Slide the space key left or right to change language keyboards . Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a wor d with a finger .
Basics 34 C opying and pasting T ap and hold ov er text, drag or to select more or less text, and then tap to copy or to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. T o paste it in to a text entr y field, plac e the cursor at the point where it should be inserted, and then tap → P aste .
Basics 35 F orgetting W i-Fi net w orks Any network that has ev er been used, including the current network, can be forgott en so the device will not automatically c onnec t to it.
Basics 36 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware.
Basics 37 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 38 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 39 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
40 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 41 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 42 • Menu button → Noise reduction off : Deactivate the noise reduction featur e that remov es background noise so that the other part y can hear you mor e clearly . • Menu button → My call sound : Selec t an equaliser option f or use during a call.
Communication 43 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the cir cle, or pr ess and hold the headset button. T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, tap Rejec t call with message . T o create the rejection message, pr ess the Menu button, and then tap Call settings → Set reject messages .
Communication 44 Ending a call T ap End call to end a call. Or pr ess the headset button. V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap to make a video call. During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 45 T ap and hold the other par ty ’ s image to access the f ollowing options: • Captur e image : Capture the other party ’ s image . • Record video : T ake a video of the other par ty ’ s images. It is illegal in many countries to r ecord a call without the other part y ’ s prior permission.
Communication 46 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 47 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • / : Make a voice or video call. • : Compose a message . • : Compose an email . Impor ting and expor ting contacts Syncing with Google C ontac ts Pr ess the M enu button, and then tap Merge with Google .
Communication 48 F av ourite con tac ts Pr ess the M enu button, and then take one of the f ollowing ac tions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Add t o F av ourites : Add c ontacts to favourites . • Remov e from fav ourites : Remove c ontacts from favourit es.
Communication 49 Business card Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set up my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal address , and then tap S ave . If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , select the business card in ME , and then tap to edit.
Communication 50 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 51 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 52 Reading messages Mark the message as unread. Add a label to this message . Pr eview attachment. Keep this message for long-term storage . Mark the message as a reminder . Delete this message. Reply to this message. Reply to all recipients or f or ward this message to others.
Communication 53 Public pr ofile T ap the accoun t ID at the top of the friends list to change the a vailability status, image , or status message. A dding friends T ap , enter the email address of the friend to add , and then tap DONE .
Communication 54 Messenger Use this application to cha t with others via Google+ instant messaging ser vice . T ap Messenger on the Applications screen.
55 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . Pr ess the M enu button to shar e, sav e, or print the curren t webpage while viewing a w ebpage.
W eb & network 56 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , press the Menu button, and then tap Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 57 Opening a new page T ap → New tab . T o go to another w ebpage, tap → a webpage . Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear .
W eb & network 58 T o activate Bluetooth, on the A pplications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth , and then drag the Bluetooth switch to the right. P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed.
59 Media Music Pla yer Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music Play er on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding used.
Media 60 Setting a song as ringtone T o use the curren tly-playing song as ringtone , press the Menu button, and then tap Set as → Phone ringtone . Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap Playlists , press the Menu button, and then tap Crea te playlist .
Media 61 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap the image on the preview scr een where the camera should focus . When the subject is in focus , the focus frame turns green. T ap or press the Camer a button to take the photo . Indicates which storage is in use .
Media 62 • Autumn c olour : Use this setting f or red-shifted backgr ound scener y . • Te x t : Use this setting f or books or posters. • Candlelight : Use this setting f or images of bright light against a dark background . • F irework : Use this setting f or high- contr ast scenes.
Media 63 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video Slide the still-video switch to the video ic on, and then tap or press the Camer a button to take a video . T o stop rec ording , tap . • Manual focus is not av ailable in video mode. • The zoom function may not be av ailable when recor ding at the highest resolution.
Media 64 T ap to change rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via messag ing. Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out .
Media 65 • Edit shor tcuts : Reorganise shor tcuts to fr equently-used options. • GPS tag : Attach a GPS location tag t o the photo . • T o impr ove GPS sig nals, avoid shooting in locations wher e the signal may be obstructed, such as between buildings or in low-lying ar eas, or in poor weather conditions.
Media 66 • Guidelines : Display viewfinder guides to help c omposition when selecting subjec ts. • Image quality : Set the quality level for photos . H igher quality images require mor e storage space . • V ideo qualit y : Set the quality level for videos .
Media 67 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods to z oom in an image: • Double -tap anywhere to zoom in. • Spread two fingers apart on any place to z oom in. Pinch t o zoom out, or double -tap to return. Pla ying videos Video files sho w the icon on the preview .
Media 68 Deleting images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , press the Menu button, tap Selec t item , select images, and then tap → Delete .

Media 71 F M R adio Listen to music and new s on the FM r adio . T o listen to the F M radio, y ou must connec t a headset, which ser ves as the radio an tenna. T ap FM Radio on the Applications screen. Listening to the F M radio Plug a headset into the devic e befor e launching the FM radio .
Media 72 Scanning radio stations Pr ess the M enu button, tap Scan , and then select a scan option. The FM r adio scans and saves available stations aut omatically . Selec t the radio station y ou want from the stations list and press the Back butt on to return to the F M radio screen.

Utilities 78 • : Lock the memo so tha t others cannot view it. • : Print the memo via a USB or Wi-F i connection. The device is only compatible with some Samsung printers. S Planner Use this application to manage ev ents and tasks. T ap S Planner on the Applications screen.
Utilities 79 Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place. Attach a map showing the loca tion of the event.

90 Settings About Settings Use this application to c onfigure the device, set application options , and add accounts. T ap Settings on the Applications screen. Wi - Fi Activate the Wi-F i featur e to connect to a Wi-F i network and access the Internet or other network devices.
Settings 91 Bluetooth Activate the Bluet ooth featur e to exchange inf or mation ov er shor t distances. Data usage Keep track of your da ta usage amount, and customise the settings f or the limitation. • Mobile data : Set to use data connections on any mobile network.
Settings 92 Mobile networks • Mobile data : Use to allo w packet switching data networks f or network ser vices. • Data roaming : Use the device t o connect to another network when you are r oaming or your home network is not av ailable. • Ac cess Poin t Names : Set up access point names ( APNs).
Settings 93 • Download to : Selec t a memor y location f or saving media files . • Upload from other devic es : Set to accept uploads fr om other devices. Kies via Wi-F i Connect the device to Samsung Kies via a Wi-F i network . Home screen mode Selec t a Home screen mode (basic or easy).
Settings 94 • T ouch sounds : Set the device to sound when selecting an application or option on the touch screen. • Screen lock sound : Set the device to sound when locking or unlock ing the touch screen. Display Change the settings for the displa y .
Settings 95 St orage View memory information for y our device and memor y card, or f ormat a memor y card. F ormatting a memor y card permanently deletes all data fr om it. The actual available capacity of the internal memor y is less than the specified capacity because the operating system and default applications oc cupy par t of the memor y .

Settings 100 – Character previe w : Set the device to display a lar ge image of each charac ter tapped. – Key -tap sound : Set the device to sound when a key is touched . • T utorial : Learn how t o enter text with the Samsung keyboard.
Settings 101 • Set wake -up command : Set a wake up command to launch S V oice or per form a specified function. • Check missed ev ents : Set to check missed calls, messages , or events when S V oice is launched by pressing the headset butt on.
Settings 102 Backup and reset Change the settings for manag ing settings and data. • Back up my da ta : Set to back up settings and application data to the Google server .
Settings 103 T orch ligh t Change the torch settings . • T orch light : T ur n on the flash to use it as a t orch. • T orch light time - out : Set the length of time the device waits befor e turning off the torch. Settings 106 • Strict mode : Set the device to flash the screen when applica tions per form long operations . • Show CPU usage : Set to list all active processes . • Pr ofile GPU rendering : Set to check the time of GPU rendering time .
107 T r oubleshooting When y ou turn on your devic e or while you ar e using the device , it prompts y ou to enter one of the f ollowing codes: • P assword: When the device lock f eature is enabled, y ou must enter the password y ou set for the devic e.
