Getting star ted 8 • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery . • Do not use a screen prot ec tor . This causes sensor malfunctions. • Do not allow water t o contac t the touch scr een.

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Remove the back c over . Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the back cov er .
Getting star ted 11 • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card. • Use caution not to lose or let others use the SIM car d.
Getting star ted 12 Removing the SIM car d and battery 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the ba tter y . 3 Pull out the SIM car d. Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable.
Getting star ted 13 • When the battery power is low , the batter y icon appears empty . • If the batter y is completely dischar ged, the device cannot be turned on immediately when the char ger is connected. Allow a deplet ed batter y to charge f or a few minut es befor e turning on the device.
Getting star ted 14 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket. Do not remov e the batter y before r emoving the charger . This may damage the device .
Getting star ted 15 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 32 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 16 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the memory card. 3 Replace the back cov er .
Getting star ted 17 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 18 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
Getting star ted 19 S witching bet w een net w orks When you insert t wo SIM car ds, you can use two diff erent subscriptions on the same network without the need to carr y two devices at the same time . Activate two cards and switch between them when making calls or sending messages.
20 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 21 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 22 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right. Exc essive shaking or impac t to the device ma y result in unintended inputs.
Basics 25 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone or mute the F M radio (when using the speaker).
Basics 26 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 27 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 28 Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel T ap → Edit page → . Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the bottom of the screen.
Basics 29 Adding widgets t o the Home screen On the Home screen, tap Apps → W idgets . Scroll left or right on the widgets panel, and then tap and hold a widget to add it to the Home scr een. Put it on a location you wan t, resiz e it by dragging the frame if nec essar y , and then tap anywhere on the screen to sa ve the location of the widget.
Basics 30 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap Apps to open the Applications scr een.
Basics 31 Sharing applications Share downloaded applica tions with other users via email, Bluetooth, or other methods . T ap → Share apps , select applications, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. The next steps var y depending on the method selected.
Basics 32 Entering upper case T ap befor e entering a charac ter . F or all caps, tap it twice. Changing language ke yboards Add languages t o the keyboard, and then slide the spac e key lef t or right to change language keyboards . Basics 35 C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices . Download the latest Samsung Kies from the Samsung website . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 36 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 37 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
38 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap or . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 39 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 40 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to C ontac ts . Sending a message T ap → Send message to send a message to the number on displa y . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls.
Communication 41 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large circle . If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When a second call comes in, end or hold the first call. Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle.
Communication 42 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter con tact information.
Communication 43 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • : Make a voice call . • : Compose a message . • : Compose an email . Displaying c ontac ts T ap Con tacts . By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts.
Communication 44 Expor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Expor t to SIM card , Expor t to SD card , or Expor t to USB storage . Sharing con tac ts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Share namecar d via , select contacts, tap Done , and then select a sharing method.
Communication 45 Sending a message or email to a group ’ s members Selec t a gr oup , tap → Send message or Send email , select members, and then tap Done .
Communication 46 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 47 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 48 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. Communication 49 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 50 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete the chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.

W eb & network 53 Bluetooth Bluetooth crea tes a direct wireless c onnection bet ween two devices o ver shor t distances. Use Bluetooth to ex change data or media files with other devices. • Samsung is not responsible f or the loss, int erception, or misuse of da ta sent or receiv ed via the Bluetooth featur e.
54 Media Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 59) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 55 Scene mode Pr edefined settings make point-and-shoot photos easier to take . T ap → Scene mode . • Landscape : Use this setting to take phot os of blue sk ies and landscapes with richer colours. • P ar ty/Indoor : Use this setting f or well-lit indoor scenes .
Media 56 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap → Shooting mode → P anorama . T ap and move the camer a in one direc tion. When the blue frame aligns with the viewfinder , the camera automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequenc e.
Media 57 T ap to change the rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via messag ing. Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out .

T roubleshooting 92 The t ouch screen r esponds slowly or improperly • If you attach a prot ective cov er or optional accessories to the t ouch screen, the touch screen ma y not function properly .
T roubleshooting 93 Sound echoes during a call Adjust the v olume by pressing the V olume button or move t o another area. A cellular netw ork or the Internet is often disconnected or audio quality is poor • Ensure that y ou are not block ing the device ’ s internal ant enna.
