Getting star ted 9 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou recor d voice memos or take videos. Do not use the device if it is cracked or broken. Getting star ted 11 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Remove the batt er y cover . Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the battery cover .
Getting star ted 12 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d into the slot until it locks in place . • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card.

Getting star ted 14 Removing the SIM or USIM car d and battery 1 Remove the batt er y cover . 2 Slide the battery lock to the right to unlock it. 3 Pull out the ba tter y . 4 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 15 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 16 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 17 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 18 1 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing upwar ds. 2 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 19 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Mo re → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 20 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 21 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .

Basics 24 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position.
Basics 25 Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Double -tap again to return. F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts.
Basics 26 Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Pinch to zoom out . C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device.
Basics 27 T o pr event the displa y from r otating automatically , open the notifications panel and deselec t Screen rota tion . • Some applications do not allow screen r otation. • Some applications display a diff erent scr een depending on the or ientation.
Basics 28 P anning to mov e T ap and hold an item, and then mov e the device to the left or right to move the item t o another panel on the Home screen or the Applications scr een. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 29 T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone or pause media playback. T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out.
Basics 30 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 31 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 32 Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel T ap → Edit page → . Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen.
Basics 33 Adding widgets t o the Home screen On the Home screen, tap Apps → W idgets . Scroll left or right on the widgets panel, and then tap and hold a widget to add it to the Home scr een. Using the setting shortcut widget On the Home screen, tap Apps → W idgets , and then tap and hold Settings Shor tcut to open a list of setting options.

Basics 35 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap Apps to open the Applications scr een.
Basics 36 Sharing applications Share downloaded applica tions with other users via email, Bluetooth, or other methods . T ap → Share app , select applications, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. The next steps var y depending on the method selected.
Basics 37 Using the Samsung ke yboard Changing the ke yboard la yout T ap → Alphabets or Numbers and symbols , and then tap Qwer ty keyboard or 3x4 keyboar d . On the 3x4 keyboard , a key has three or f our charac ters. T o enter a char acter , tap repeat edly the key corresponding to the char ac ter .
Basics 38 C opying and pasting T ap and hold ov er text, drag or to select more or less text, and then tap Cop y to cop y or Cut to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. T o paste it in to a text entr y field, tap and hold a t the point where it should be inserted, and then tap P aste .
Basics 39 A dding W i-F i netw orks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap Connect .
Basics 40 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 41 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 42 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 43 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
44 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 45 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 46 • → Con tacts : Open the contacts list. • → Memo : Creat e a memo. • → Message : Send a message. • → T ransfer : Connect the first par ty to the second par ty .
Communication 47 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle, or pr ess the headset button. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold .
Communication 48 Ending a call T ap End call to end a call. Or pr ess the headset button. V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap to make a video call. During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 49 T ap and hold the other par ty ’ s image to access the f ollowing options: • Captur e image : Capture the other party ’ s image . • Record video : T ake a video of the other par ty ’ s images. It is illegal in many countries to r ecord a call without the other part y ’ s prior permission.
Communication 50 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter con tact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 51 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • / : Make a voice or video call. • : Compose a message . • : Compose an email . Displaying c ontac ts By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts on the device, the SIM or USIM car d, or another account .
Communication 52 Sharing con tac ts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Share namecar d via , select contacts, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. F av ourite con tac ts T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts.
Communication 53 Business card Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set up my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal address , and then tap S ave . If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , select the business card in ME , and then tap to edit.
Communication 54 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Scheduled message . Set a time and date, and then tap OK . The device will send the message a t the specified time and date .
Communication 55 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 56 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 57 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 58 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 59 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete the chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.
Communication 60 ChatON Use this application to cha t with any devic e. T o use this application, you must sig n in to your Samsung account. T ap ChatON on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
61 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 62 Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy . T o view sa ved links , use Downloads . W eb & network 63 Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account. T o view open tabs on other devices , tap → Other devices . Selec t a webpage t o open.
W eb & network 64 Sending and receiving da ta Many applications support data transfer via Bluetooth. A n example is Galler y . Open Galler y , select an image, tap → Bluetooth , and then select one of the Bluetooth devices. After that, acc ept the Bluetooth authorisation request on the other devic e to rec eive the image .
W eb & network 65 Samsung Link Use this application to pla y contents sav ed on various devices over the Internet. Y ou can play and send multimedia files on your device t o another device or web storage service. T o use this application, y ou must sign in to your Samsung accoun t and regist er two or more devices.
W eb & network 66 Managing con tents on a w eb storage service Selec t a web st orage ser vice , and then view and manage your files. T o download files fr om a web storage service, tap , select files, and then tap Done .
W eb & network 67 T ap and write a note or dra w on the screen. All participants can see what you crea te . T ap to view all shared images in mosaic la yout.
W eb & network 68 Sending data via Andr oid Beam Use the Andr oid Beam featur e to send data, such as w ebpages and contacts, to NFC-enabled devices. On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → NFC . Drag the Android Beam switch to the right.
W eb & network 69 C onnec ting to a T V Connect to a T V to display the device ’ s scr een onto a large surface and control the T V remotely with the devic e. Selec t a country and a region. T ap → Set Up Now , and then follo w the on-screen instructions to register the T V to the device .

Aim the camera at a human subject. When the camera detects a human face , a white frame appears around the face .
Camera: Basic functions 78 Half-pressing the Shutt er button Pr ess the Shutter button halfway do wn to adjust the focus . The camera adjusts the focus , exposure , and white balance automatically , and the focus frame turns green. The focus fr ame turns red if not f ocused.

Camera: Shooting modes 93 Silhouette Use this to take phot os of dark shapes against a light background . T ap MODE → Smar t → Silhouette . T o maximise the silhouette eff ec t, take photos at a loca tion that is bright. Sunset Use this to take phot os of the sunset.
Camera: Shooting modes 94 F irew orks Use this to take phot os of fireworks . T ap MODE → Smar t → F ireworks . The image may appear blurry due to the slow shutter speed when the camera takes photos. Make sur e to use a tripod. Light tr ace Use this to take phot os of the light trailing in low-ligh t conditions.

Camera: Shooting options and settings 97 • When taking a photo , if the appropriate exposur e value cannot be decided, use the AE BKT option to take multiple photos with diff erent exposure values . • T aking photos with higher exposure value may r esult in blurr y photos due to the slower shutt er speed.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 98 WB (light sour ce) White balance r epresents the light sourc e that influences on the colour of a photo . The colour of a phot o depends on the type and qualit y of the light sour ce.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 99 Examples Aut o WB Daylight Cloudy T ungsten Metering The metering mode r efers to the method the camer a measures the quantity of light. The camera measur es the amount of light in a scene, and in man y of its modes, uses the measurement t o adjust various settings.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 100 • Spot : The camera calcula tes the amount of light in the cen tre . When you take a phot o in conditions where ther e is a strong back light behind a subject, the camera adjusts the exposure t o shoot a subject correctly .
Camera: Shooting options and settings 101 F lash T o take a r ealistic photo of a subject, the amount of light should be constant. When the light source v aries, you can use a flash and supply a c onstant amount of light. T ap (or → ) → → Flash , and select an option.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 102 F ocus area Use this option to change the positions of the f ocus area. Generally , cameras f ocus on the nearest subject.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 103 Photo siz e As you incr ease the resolution, your photo will include mor e pixels, so it can be printed on larger paper or display ed on a larger screen. When you use a high r esolution, the file size will also increase .
