Getting star ted 8 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Remove the back c over . Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the back cov er .
Getting star ted 11 • Do not remov e the protective tape cov ering the antenna, as this can damage the antenna. • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card.

Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot. 4 Replace the battery and back cover . Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 17 Do not remov e the memor y card while the device is transferring or acc essing information. Doing so can cause data t o be lost or corrupted or damage to the memor y card or device . Samsung is not responsible for losses that r esult from the misuse of damaged memor y cards , including the loss of data.
Getting star ted 18 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation.
Getting star ted 19 A c tivating SIM or USIM car ds On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → SIM card manager . Drag one or both of the switches f or the SIM or USIM cards to the right. Changing the displa y name and icon of SIM or USIM cards On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → SIM card manager .

Basics 21 Icon Meaning Fligh t mode activated Error occurr ed or caution required Battery power level U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 22 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 Rotating the screen Many applications allo w display in either por trait or landscape orientation. Rotating the device causes the display t o automatically adjust to fit the new scr een or ientation. T o pr event the displa y from r otating automatically , open the notifications panel and deselec t Screen rota tion .
Basics 25 Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contact details, pick up and hold the device to y our ear to make a call. P anning to mov e T ap and hold an item, and then mov e the device to the left or right to move the item t o another panel on the Home screen or the Applications scr een.
Basics 26 P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image. T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio (when using the speaker).
Basics 27 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 28 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 29 • Sync : Activate or deactivate aut o-syncing of applications. • Airplane mode : Activate or deactivate fligh t mode. The av ailable options may vary depending on the region or ser vice pro vider .
Basics 30 Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen. When the rubbish bin turns red, release the it em. Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel T ap → Edit page → . Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 31 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 32 Drag the widgets panel down t o expand it. Scroll right to the last page , tap , and then select a widget to add to the locked screen. Rearranging panels Moving a panel Drag the widgets panel down, scr oll lef t or right, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 33 Opening from r ecently-used applica tions Pr ess and hold the Home button to open the list of recen tly-used applications. Selec t an application icon t o open. Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance .
Basics 34 Installing applications Use application stor es, such as Samsung Apps , to download and install applications . Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall , and then select an application to uninstall it. Default applications that come with the device cannot be uninstalled .
Basics 35 Using the Samsung ke yboard Changing the ke yboard la yout T ap → P or trait keyboard types , and then tap Qwer ty keyboard or 3x4 keyboar d . On the 3x4 keyboard , a key has three or f our charac ters. T o enter a char acter , tap repeat edly the key corresponding to the char ac ter .
Basics 36 C opying and pasting T ap and hold ov er text, drag or to select more or less text, and then tap Cop y to cop y or Cut to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. T o paste it in to a text entr y field, tap and hold a t the point where it should be inserted, and then tap P aste .
Basics 37 F orgetting W i-Fi net w orks Any network that has ev er been used, including the current network, can be forgott en so the device will not automatically c onnec t to it.
Basics 38 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 39 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 40 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 41 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
42 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap or . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 43 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 44 • → Con tacts : Open the contacts list. • → Memo : Creat e a memo. • → Message : Send a message. • → T ransfer : Connect the first par ty to the second par ty .
Communication 45 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle, or pr ess the headset button. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold .
Communication 46 Call f or warding The device can be set t o send incoming calls to a specified number . T ap → Call settings → Additional settings → a SIM or USIM card → Call f or warding , and then select a call t ype and condition. Ent er a number and tap T urn on .
Communication 47 • → Theme view : Apply decora tive icons t o your image . • → Enable car toon view : Change the view mode to the car toon view . T ap and hold the other par ty ’ s image to access the f ollowing options: • Captur e image : Capture the other party ’ s image .
Communication 48 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter con tact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 49 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • / : M ake a voic e or video call. • : Compose a message . • : Compose an email . Displaying c ontac ts By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts on the device, the SIM or USIM car d, or another account .
Communication 50 Expor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Expor t to SIM card , Expor t to SD card , or Expor t to USB storage . Sharing con tac ts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Share namecar d via , select contacts, tap Done , and then select a sharing method.
Communication 51 • Delete gr oups : Selec t user-added gr oups, and then tap Delete . Default groups cannot be deleted. • Help : Ac cess help information about using c ontac ts. Sending a message or email to a group ’ s members Selec t a gr oup , tap → Send message or Send email , select members, and then tap Done .
Communication 52 Use the f ollowing methods to make a multimedia message: • T ap and attach images , videos, contacts, memos, ev ents, and others. • T ap → Add subject to enter a subject. Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Scheduled message .
Communication 53 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 54 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 55 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter r ecipients, a subject, and a message, and then tap . T ap → Attach picture to attach images . T ap → Attach video to attach videos . T ap → Add C c/Bcc to add more r ecipients. T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y .
Communication 56 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 57 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete the chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.

W eb & network 60 Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy . T o view sa ved links , use Downloads . W eb & network 61 Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account. T o view open tabs on other devices , tap → Other devices . Selec t a webpage t o open.
W eb & network 62 Sending and receiving da ta Many applications support data transfer via Bluetooth. A n example is Galler y . Open Galler y , select an image, tap → Bluetooth , and then select one of the Bluetooth devices. After that, acc ept the Bluetooth authorisation request on the other devic e to rec eive the image .
W eb & network 63 Samsung Link Use this application to pla y contents sav ed on various devices over the Internet. Y ou can play and send any file on an y device to another device or web st orage ser vice . T o use this application, y ou must sign in to your Samsung accoun t and regist er two or more devices.
W eb & network 64 Using the Gr oup Play f eatur e Share scr eens with multiple devices. Select a media categor y and tap . Selec t files, tap Done , and then tap Group Pla y . A Group Pla y session is created and the files are shar ed with other devices in the session.
W eb & network 65 T ap and write a note or dra w on the screen. All participants can see what you crea te . T ap to view all shared images in mosaic la yout. T ap to select more images or documents . T ap to view the gr oup par ticipants. Joining Group Pla y T ap Join group , enter the passw ord , and then select a Group Play session to join.
W eb & network 66 W atching T V Selec t from the T V prog ramme suggestions based on your choic e when regist ering a T V or select a categor y at the top of the screen. Select a T V programme and then tap W atch no w . The selected progr amme will show up on the connected T V .
67 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 68 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 69 Camer a etiquette • Do not take photos or videos of other people without their permission. • Do not take photos or videos where legally pr ohibited. • Do not take photos or videos in places wher e you may viola te other people ’ s privacy .
Media 70 • Con tinuous shot : T ake a series of photos of moving subjects. • Best face : Use this to take multiple g roup shots at the same time and combine them t o creat e the best possible image. T ap to take multiple photos . T o get the best shot, hold the camera steady and r emain still while taking photos.
Media 71 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap t o take a video . T o pause r ecording, tap . T o stop r ecording, tap . While rec ording , use the following actions: • T o change the f ocus, tap where you w ant to f ocus. T o focus on the c entre of the scr een, tap .
Media 72 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 73 C ontrolling the camera r emotely Set the device as a viewfinder to contr ol the camera remotely . T ap → → Remote viewfinder , and then connect the device and the camera using Wi-F i Direct. T ap to take a photo r emotely using the device as a viewfinder .
Media 74 • Review : Briefly display photos taken. • V olume key : Set the device to use the V olume button to con trol the shutter or z oom function. • T imer : Use this f or delayed-time shots . • White balanc e : Selec t an appropriat e white balance , so images have a true -to-life colour range.

Media 76 Pla ying videos Video files sho w the icon on the preview . Selec t a video to wat ch it and tap . T rimming segmen ts of a video Selec t a video , and then tap . Move the start bracket to the desired starting point, move the end bracket to the desir ed ending point, and then sav e the video.
Media 77 Modifying images When viewing an image, tap and use the f ollowing functions: • Rot ate : Rotate the image . • Crop : Crop the image . • Color : Adjust the satur ation or brightness of the image. • Effect : Apply effects to the image .
Media 78 Setting as wallpaper When viewing an image, tap → Set as to set the image as wallpaper or to assig n it to a contact. T agging fac es T ap → Settings , and then tick F ace tag . A yellow fr ame appears around the recognised face on an image .
Media 79 Crea ting recommended albums When you take phot os at one location, the device aut omatically sor ts your phot os into albums based on your specified criteria and suggests making the new albums. T ap → Settings → Home city , and then set a method for r ecognising your location.
Media 80 T o start a slideshow , tap → Slideshow → Star t slideshow . T o set the image as an album co ver image, tap → Set as cov er . T o r otate the image anticlockwise, tap → Rotate left . T o r otate the image clockwise, tap → Rotate right .
Media 81 Sharing videos T ap → Share via , select videos by tick ing, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. Using P opup V ideo play er Use this f eature t o use other applications without closing the video play er . While watching videos, tap to use the pop-up player .
Media 82 Sharing videos Selec t the video to view , tap , and then select a shar ing method. Uploading videos Selec t your ac count, tap , selec t a video , enter inf or mation f or the video , and then tap . F M R adio Listen to music and new s on the FM r adio .

Utilities 88 When jotting down a memo , tap once more to change the pen type, line thickness, or pen colour . When erasing the handwritten memo , tap once more t o change the eraser size or clear the memo . View mor e colours. Change the line thickness.
Utilities 89 T o change the view mode , tap → List view . T o cr eate a memo by importing a file, tap → Impor t . T o export memos as another file format, tap → Expor t . T o cr eate a f older , tap → Crea te folder . T o mov e memos to another folder , tap → M ove .
Utilities 90 T o add an ev ent or task more briefly , tap a date to select it and tap it again. Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Utilities 93 Clock Use this application to set alarms , check the time in any location in the world, measur e the duration of an ev ent, set a timer , or use as the desk clock.
Utilities 94 Stopping alarms Drag outside the lar ge circle to stop an alarm. Drag outside the large circle to r epeat the alarm after a specified length of time. Deleting alarms T ap and hold the alarm, and then tap Delete . W orld clock Crea ting clocks T ap Add city , and then enter a city name or select a cit y from the cities list.

Settings 105 Setting Network notification The device can det ect open Wi-F i networks and display an icon on the sta tus bar to notify when available .
