Getting star ted 8 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot. 4 Replace the battery and back cover . Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 17 3 Replace the battery and back cover . Do not remov e the memor y card while the device is transferring or acc essing information. Doing so can cause data t o be lost or corrupted or damage to the memor y card or device .

19 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.

Basics 21 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position.
Basics 22 Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Double -tap again to return. F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts.
Basics 23 Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Pinch to zoom out . C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device.

Basics 25 P anning to mov e T ap and hold an item, and then mov e the device to the left or right to move the item t o another panel on the Home screen or the Applications scr een. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 26 T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio (when using the speaker). T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out.
Basics 27 P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Motions and gestures → P alm motion , and then drag the P alm motion switch to the right.
Basics 28 Quick setting panel F rom the quick setting panel, you can view y our device ’ s curren t settings. Drag do wn from the status bar , tap to open the quick setting panel, and then use the f ollowing options: • Wi - Fi : Activate or deactivate the Wi-F i featur e.
Basics 29 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 30 Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel T ap → Edit page → . Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen.
Basics 31 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 32 Drag the widgets panel down t o expand it. Scroll right to the last page , tap , and then select a widget to add to the locked screen. Rearranging panels Moving a panel Drag the widgets panel down, scr oll lef t or right, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location.
Basics 33 Opening from r ecently-used applica tions Pr ess and hold the Home button to open the list of recen tly-used applications. Selec t an application icon t o open. Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance .

Installing applications Use application stor es, such as Samsung Apps , to download and install applications . Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall , and then select an application to uninstall it.
Basics 35 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 36 Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone . The device display s what you speak. If the device does not recog nise your wor ds correctly , tap the underlined tex t and select an alternative w ord or phrase from the dr opdown list.
Basics 37 Joining W i-F i netw orks On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Wi - Fi , and then drag the Wi - Fi switch to the right. Selec t a network from the list of det ected Wi-F i net works , enter a password if nec essar y , and then tap Connect .
Basics 38 Removing ac coun ts On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Ac counts , select an account name under My acc ounts , select the account to r emove , and then tap Remov e accoun t . T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa.
Basics 39 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 40 Setting a face and v oice unlock On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → F ace and v oice . F it your face in the frame to be captur ed and then set a voice command. Then, set a backup unlock PIN or pattern to unlock the scr een in case the face and voice unlock fails.
Basics 41 Setting a passwor d On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P asswor d . Enter at least f our charac ters including numbers and symbols , and then enter the passw ord again to verify it.
Basics 42 Upgr ading ov er the air The device can be dir ec tly upgraded to the lat est sof tware by the firmw are ov er-the -air (FO T A) service. On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Mo re → About device → Sof tware upda te → Update .
43 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 44 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 45 • → Con tacts : Open the contacts list. • → Memo : Creat e a memo. • → Message : Send a message. • → T ransfer : Connect the first par ty to the second par ty .
Communication 46 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle, or pr ess the headset button. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold .
Communication 47 Call f or warding The device can be set t o send incoming calls to a specified number . T ap → Call settings → Additional settings → Call f or warding , and then select a call type and condition. Enter a number and tap Enable . Ending a call T ap End call to end a call.
Communication 48 • → Theme view : Apply decora tive icons t o your image . • → Enable car toon view : Change the view mode to the car toon view . T ap and hold the other par ty ’ s image to access the f ollowing options: • Captur e image : Capture the other party ’ s image .
Communication 49 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter con tact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 50 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • / : Make a voice or video call. • : Compose a message . • : Compose an email . Displaying c ontac ts By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts on the device, the SIM or USIM car d, or another account .
Communication 51 Expor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Expor t to SIM card , Expor t to SD card , or Expor t to USB storage . Sharing con tac ts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Share namecar d via , select contacts, tap Done , and then select a sharing method.
Communication 52 • Delete gr oups : Selec t user-added gr oups, and then tap Delete . Default groups cannot be deleted. • Help : Ac cess help information about using c ontac ts. Sending a message or email to a group ’ s members Selec t a gr oup , tap → Send message or Send email , select members, and then tap Done .
Communication 53 Use the f ollowing methods to make a multimedia message: • T ap and attach images , videos, contacts, memos, ev ents, and others. • T ap → Add subject to enter a subject. Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Scheduled message .
Communication 54 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 55 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 56 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter r ecipients, a subject, and a message, and then tap . T ap → Attach picture to attach images . T ap → Attach video to attach videos . T ap → Add C c/Bcc to add more r ecipients. T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y .
Communication 57 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 58 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete the chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.

W eb & network 62 Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account. T o view open tabs on other devices , tap → Other devices . Selec t a webpage t o open.
W eb & network 63 Sending and receiving da ta Many applications support data transfer via Bluetooth. A n example is Galler y . Open Galler y , select an image, tap → Bluetooth , and then select one of the Bluetooth devices. After that, acc ept the Bluetooth authorisation request on the other devic e to rec eive the image .
W eb & network 64 Samsung Link Use this application to pla y contents sav ed on various devices over the Internet. Y ou can play and send any file on an y device to another device or web st orage ser vice . T o use this application, y ou must sign in to your Samsung accoun t and regist er two or more devices.
W eb & network 65 Using the Gr oup Play f eatur e Share scr eens with multiple devices. Select a media categor y and tap . Selec t files, tap Done , and then tap Group Pla y . A Group Pla y session is created and the files are shar ed with other devices in the session.
W eb & network 66 T ap and write a note or dra w on the screen. All participants can see what you crea te . T ap to view all shared images in mosaic la yout.
W eb & network 67 Mak ing a purchase with the NFC f eature Befor e you can use the NFC f eature t o make payments , you must register f or the mobile payment service. T o register or get details about the service, con tact your ser vice pro vider .
W eb & network 68 On the Applications scr een, tap Settings → Connections → S Beam . Drag the S Beam switch to the right. Selec t a file, t ouch the back of your device to the back of the other device , and then tap your device ’ s screen. If both devices tr y to send data simultaneously , the file transfer may fail .
W eb & network 69 W atching T V Selec t from the T V prog ramme suggestions based on your choic e when regist ering a T V or select a categor y at the top of the screen. Select a T V programme and then tap W atch no w . The selected progr amme will show up on the connected T V .
70 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 71 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 72 Camer a etiquette • Do not take photos or videos of other people without their permission. • Do not take photos or videos where legally pr ohibited. • Do not take photos or videos in places wher e you may viola te other people ’ s privacy .
Media 73 • Con tinuous shot : T ake a series of photos of moving subjects. • Best face : Use this to take multiple g roup shots at the same time and combine them t o creat e the best possible image. T ap to take multiple photos . T o get the best shot, hold the camera steady and r emain still while taking photos.
Media 74 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap t o take a video . T o pause recor ding, tap . T o st op recor ding, tap . While rec ording , use the following actions: • T o change the f ocus, tap where you w ant to f ocus. T o focus on the c entre of the scr een, tap .
Media 75 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 76 C ontrolling the camera r emotely Set the device as a viewfinder to contr ol the camera remotely . T ap → → Remote viewfinder , and then connect the device and the camera using Wi-F i Direct or NFC. T ap to take a photo r emotely using the device as a viewfinder .
Media 77 • Review : Briefly display photos taken. • V olume key : Set the device to use the V olume button to con trol the shutter or z oom function. • T imer : Use this f or delayed-time shots . • White balanc e : Selec t an appropriat e white balance , so images have a true -to-life colour range.

Media 80 Modifying images When viewing an image, tap and use the following functions: • Rot ate : Rotate the image . • Crop : Crop the image . • Colour : Adjust the satur ation or brightness of the image. • Effect : Apply effects to the image .
Media 81 Setting as wallpaper When viewing an image, tap → Set as to set the image as wallpaper or to assig n it to a contact. T agging fac es T ap → Settings , and then tick F ace tag . A yellow fr ame appears around the recognised face on an image .
Media 82 Crea ting recommended albums When you take phot os at one location, the device aut omatically sor ts your phot os into albums based on your specified criteria and suggests making the new albums. T ap → Settings → Home city , and then set a method for r ecognising your location.
Media 83 Editing images T ap the image of the page in an album. T o add a caption, tap . T o send the image to others , tap . T o delete the image , tap . T o apply eff ec ts to the image, tap . T o start a slideshow , tap → Slideshow → Star t slideshow .
Media 84 Pla ying videos Selec t a video to pla y . Change screen ratio . Move f or wards or backwards by dragging the bar . Scan DLNA- enabled devices. Restar t the current video or skip to the previous video . T ap and hold to mov e backwards quickly .
