Getting star ted 8 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . • Only microSIM car ds work with the device . • Some L TE ser vices may not be available depending on the service provider .
Getting star ted 11 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d into the slot until it locks in place . • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card.
Getting star ted 12 Removing the SIM or USIM car d and battery 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the ba tter y . 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Replace the back cov er . Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 17 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → MORE → Stor age → F ormat SD card → FORMA T SD CARD → ERASE EVERYTHING .
Getting star ted 18 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation.
19 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.

Basics 21 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options.
Basics 22 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → MY DEVICE → Motions and gestures → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right.
Basics 25 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contact details, pick up and hold the device to y our ear to make a call.
Basics 26 P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 27 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 28 C overing Co ver the screen with y our palm to mute incoming calls or alarms, or t o pause media playback. Air Gesture Use this f eature t o control functions without touching the scr een. Befor e using this featur e, make sure the air gestur e featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 29 Air br ow se Move y our hand to the left or right across the sensor to br owse images , songs, or memos. Air mo ve T ap and hold an icon with one hand , and then move y our other hand to the lef t or right across the sensor to mo ve the icon to another location.
Basics 30 Air call-ac cept When a call comes in, mo ve your hand t o the lef t, and then to the right across the sensor t o answer the call . Air V iew Use this f eature t o per form various functions while your finger is hovering ov er the screen.
Basics 31 Samsung Smar t P ause Use this f eature t o pause videos when you look aw ay from the scr een. On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → MY DEVICE → Smar t screen , and then tick Smar t pause . During video playback, look away from the scr een to pause the video .
Basics 32 A c tiva ting Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run two applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w panel can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 33 Using Multi W indow applications While using Multi Windo w applications, select an application window , tap the circle between the application windows , and then use one of the following: • : Switch loca tions between Multi Window applica tions.
Basics 34 • Sound : Activate or deactivate silen t mode. • Screen rota tion : Allow or pr event the int er face from r otating when you rotat e the device. • Bluetooth : Activate or deactivate the Bluet ooth featur e. • Mobile data : Activate or deactivate the da ta connection.
Basics 35 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 36 Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel Pinch on the scr een, scroll to the last page, and then tap . Moving a panel Pinch on the scr een, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel Pinch on the scr een, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen.
Basics 37 Adding widgets t o the Home screen On the Home screen, tap → W idgets . Scroll left or right on the widgets panel, and then tap and hold a widget to add it to the Home scr een. Put it on a location you wan t, resiz e it by dragging the frame if nec essar y , and then tap anywhere on the screen to sa ve the location of the widget.
Basics 38 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap Apps to open the Applications scr een. T o view other panels , scroll left or right. Rearranging applica tions This f eature is a vailable only in the customisable grid view .
Basics 39 Disabling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to disable it. T o enable the application, on the Applica tions screen, tap Settings → MORE → Application manager , scroll to DISABLED , select the application, and then tap ENABLE .
Basics 40 Using the Samsung ke yboard Break to the next line. Delete a preceding char acter . Enter punctuation marks. Enter uppercase . Set options for the Samsung keyboard. Enter a space . Entering upper case T ap bef ore entering a character . F or all caps, tap it twice.
Basics 41 Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone . The device display s what you speak. If the device does not recog nise your wor ds correctly , tap the underlined tex t and select an alternative w ord or phrase from the dr opdown list.
Basics 42 Joining W i-F i netw orks On the Applications screen, tap Settings → C ONNEC TIONS → Wi - Fi , and then drag the Wi - Fi switch to the right. Selec t a network from the list of det ected Wi-F i net works , enter a password if nec essar y , and then tap C ONNEC T .
Basics 43 Setting up acc ounts Google applications, such as Play St ore , requir e a Google account, and GALAXY Apps requir es a Samsung account. C reate Google and Samsung acc ounts to ha ve the best experience with the device .
Basics 44 C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices . Download the latest Samsung Kies from the Samsung website . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 45 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → MY DEVICE → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 46 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
47 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 48 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 49 • → Con tacts : Open the contacts list. • → Memo : Creat e a memo. • → Message : Send a message. Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to C ontac ts .
Communication 50 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the lar ge circle. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold . Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle.
Communication 51 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap to make a video call. During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 52 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 53 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • / : Make a voic e or video call. • : Compose a message . • : Compose an email . Displaying c ontac ts By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts on the device, the SIM or USIM car d, or another account .
Communication 54 Sharing con tac ts T ap → Share name car d , select contacts, tap DONE , and then select a sharing method. F av ourite con tac ts T ap to add contacts to fav ourites. T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts.
Communication 55 Business card Creat e a business card and send it to others. T ap Set my pr ofile , enter details , such as phone number , email address, and postal addr ess, and then tap SA VE . If user information has been sav ed when you set up the device , selec t the business card , and then tap to edit.
Communication 56 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule message . Set a time and date, and then tap DONE . The device will send the message a t the specified time and date .
Communication 57 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 58 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Delete the message. Mark the message as a reminder .
Communication 59 Gmail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Gmail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 60 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap → Change labels and then select the label to assign.
Communication 61 Photos Use this application to view and shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vices. T ap Photos on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
62 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 63 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy . T o view sa ved links , use Downloads .
W eb & network 64 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap → , speak a keywor d, and then selec t one of the suggested keywords that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 65 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → C ONNEC TIONS → Bluetooth → SCAN , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
W eb & network 66 Samsung Link Use this application to pla y content sav ed on remotely located devices or w eb storage ser vices ov er the I nternet. Y ou can play and send multimedia files on y our device to another device or web st orage ser vice.
W eb & network 67 Managing con tents on a w eb storage service Selec t a web st orage ser vice , and then view and manage your files. T o transf er files bet ween y our device and a web storage service, tap → Selec t , select files, and then tap .
W eb & network 68 Crea ting a group f or Group Pla y When you cr eate a Group Pla y session, other devices can join the session and view the device ’ s screen. When you use a passw ord for a Gr oup Play session, other devices must en ter the passwor d to join the session.

W eb & network 71 W a tchON Use this application to c onnec t to a T V to watch your fa vourite shows and movies . T ap W atchON on the Applications screen. Y ou must first connec t the device to a network and ensur e that the device ’ s infrar ed por t is facing the T V .
72 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding used.
Media 73 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Smar t volume . When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 74 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 82) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. A lternatively , from the locked screen, dr ag anywhere on the scr een.

Media 77 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap MODE → P anorama . T ap and move the camer a in one direc tion. When two panorama guide frames ar e aligned, the camer a automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequenc e.
Media 78 Recor ding mode T ap → to change rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via messag ing. • Slow motion : Use this mode to take a video of a mo ving subject.
Media 79 Dual Camer a mode When you take a landscape phot o with the rear camera, the phot o or video of captured by the front camer a appears in an inset window , or vice versa. Use this f eature to take a beautiful landscape photo and a self-por trait simultaneously .
Media 80 C ontrolling the camera r emotely Set the device as a viewfinder to contr ol the camera remotely . T ap → → Remote viewfinder , and then connect the device and the camera using Wi-F i Direct or NFC. T ap to take a photo r emotely using the device as a viewfinder .
Media 81 • Location tag : Attach a GPS location tag t o the photo . Activate this fea ture when taking photos to cr eate albums in Story Album . • T o impr ove GPS sig nals, avoid shooting in locations wher e the signal may be obstructed, such as between buildings or in low-lying ar eas, or in poor weather conditions.

Media 84 Modifying images When viewing an image, tap and use the f ollowing func tions: • Rot ate : Rotate the image . • Crop : Crop the image . • Colour : Adjust the satur ation or brightness of the image. • Effect : Apply effects to the image .
Media 85 Sharing images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap t o send them to others. • When viewing an image, tap to send it to others or share it via social network services.
Media 86 St or y Album Use this application to cr eate your own dig ital album to keep your st ories by organising the images neatly and automatically . T ap Story Album on the Applications screen. Crea ting stor y albums Creat e stor y albums by selecting images from Galler y or images sor ted by tag inf ormation.
Media 87 Crea ting albums by tag information Creat e albums by sor ting photos by tag information, such as the loca tion where an image was taken, subjects, or time. T ap By tag information , and then set the follo wing tag options: • Location : Specify a location.
Media 88 Editing images T ap the image of the page in an album. Add a caption. Select among various effects that are a vailable. Send the image to others. Delete the image. T ap , and then use the following functions: • Slideshow : Star t a slideshow or change the slideshow settings .
Media 89 Crea ting albums with recommended phot os When you take multiple phot os in a location, the device suggests cr eating a new album based on the location. This featur e helps you crea te photo albums c onv eniently when you hav e daily events or tra vel.
Media 90 V ideo Use this application to pla y video files. T ap V ideo on the Applications screen. • A void locking the device ’ s screen while playing a DivX Video- On-Demand. Each time you lock the scr een while playing a DivX V ideo- On-Demand, one of your available r ental counts is lost.

Deleting alarms T ap and hold the alarm, and then tap Delete . W orld clock Crea ting clocks T ap , and then ent er a city name or selec t a city from the cities list.
Utilities 104 Calcula tor Use this application f or simple or complex calculations. T ap Calculat or on the Applications screen. Rotate the device t o landscape orientation to display the scien tific calculator . If Screen rotation is disabled, tap → Scientific calculator .
Utilities 105 Based on your ph ysical statistics, the device calculat es your basal metabolic ra te (BMR) and recommends a daily caloric intake . The recommenda tion may not be accurat e for all ages , body compositions, or nutritional needs. Checking your health inf ormation View y our information on the S Health home screen.
Utilities 106 Using the W alk ing mat e Set a target number of steps and track y our daily steps and burned calor ies. On the S Health home screen, tap → P edometer . Acc ess the S Health menu screen. View the logs of y our daily steps. T arget number of steps View y our step count on a graph.
