Getting star ted 8 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Remove the back c over . Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the back cov er .
Getting star ted 11 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d into the slot until it locks in place . • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card.
Getting star ted 12 Removing the SIM or USIM car d and battery 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the ba tter y . 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Replace the back cov er . Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 17 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Mo re → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 18 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . A djusting the volume Pr ess the Volume butt on up or down to adjust the ringtone volume , or to adjust the sound volume when pla ying music or video .
19 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 20 Icon Meaning Fligh t mode activated Error occurr ed or caution required Battery power level U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 21 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options. Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position.
Basics 22 Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Double -tap again to return. F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts.
Basics 23 Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Pinch to zoom out . C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device.
Basics 24 T o pr event the displa y from r otating automatically , open the notifications panel and deselec t Screen rota tion . • Some applications do not allow screen r otation. • Some applications display a diff erent scr een depending on the or ientation.
Basics 25 P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 26 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 27 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . Air Gesture Use this f eature t o control functions without touching the scr een.
Basics 28 Air jump While viewing emails or webpages , move your hand up or do wn across the sensor to scr oll the page up or down. Air br ow se Move y our hand to the left or right across the sensor to br owse images , webpages, songs, or memos.
Basics 29 Air mo ve T ap and hold an icon with one hand , and then move y our other hand to the lef t or right across the sensor to mo ve the icon to another location. While using the daily or weekly calendar , tap and hold an event, and then mov e your other hand to the left or right to mov e the event to another da y or week .
Basics 30 Air V iew On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Air view , and then drag the Air view switch to the right. P oint at an item with your finger to pr eview the content or view inf ormation in a pop-up window . When you poin t at an area on a w ebpage for a few seconds , the device magnifies the area.
Basics 31 Samsung Smar t S cr oll On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Smar t screen → Smar t scroll , and then drag the Smar t scroll switch to the right. While viewing emails or webpages , tilt your head downw ards or upw ards to scr oll in that direction.
Basics 32 A c tiva ting Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run two applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w panel can run. • When launching applications that c ontain multimedia files, such as music or videos, sound fr om both files will be play ed.
Basics 33 Using Multi W indow applications While using Multi Windo w applications, tap or and use one of the follo wing: • : Switch loca tions between Multi Window applica tions. • : Maximise the window to fit the screen. • : Close the application.
Basics 34 • Screen Mirroring : Activate or deactivate the scr een mir roring f eature. • Multi window : Set to use Multi Window . • W i-Fi hotspot : Activate or deactivate the Wi-F i tethering featur e. • S Beam : Activate or deactivate the S Beam f eature.
Basics 35 Rearranging it ems Adding an applica tion icon On the Home screen, tap Apps , tap and hold an application icon, and then drag it in to a panel preview .
Basics 36 Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen. Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen.
Basics 37 Adding widgets t o the Home screen On the Home screen, tap Apps → W idgets . Scroll left or right on the widgets panel, and then tap and hold a widget to add it to the Home scr een. Using the setting shortcut widget On the Home screen, tap Apps → W idgets , and then tap and hold Settings Shor tcut to open a list of setting options.
Basics 38 A dding widgets T o use widgets when the scr een is locked, on the Applications scr een, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een , and then tick Multiple widgets . Y ou cannot use widgets on the locked screen in easy mode. Drag the widgets panel down t o expand it.
Basics 39 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 40 Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience . T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to Crea te folder . Enter a f older name and then tap OK . Put applica tions into the new f older by dragg ing, and then tap S ave to sav e the ar rangement.
Basics 41 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 42 Changing the ke yboard type T ap and hold , and then tap to change the keyboard type . T ap and hold and move the floating keyboard t o another location. T o switch t o the fixed keyboard , tap . Changing language ke yboards Add languages t o the keyboard, and then slide the spac e key lef t or right to change language keyboards .
Basics 43 Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone . The device display s what you speak. If the device does not recog nise your wor ds correctly , tap the underlined tex t and select an alternative w ord or phrase from the dr opdown list.
Basics 44 Joining W i-F i netw orks On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Wi - Fi , and then drag the Wi - Fi switch to the right. Selec t a network from the list of det ected Wi-F i net works , enter a password if nec essar y , and then tap Connect .
Basics 45 Removing ac coun ts On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Ac counts , select an account name under My acc ounts , select the account to r emove , and then tap Remov e accoun t . T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa.
Basics 46 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 47 Setting a face and v oice unlock On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → F ace and v oice . F it your face in the frame to be captur ed and then set a voice command. Then, set a backup unlock PIN or pattern to unlock the scr een in case the face and voice unlock fails.
Basics 48 Setting a passwor d On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P asswor d . Enter at least f our charac ters including numbers and symbols , and then enter the passw ord again to verify it.
Basics 49 Upgr ading ov er the air The device can be dir ec tly upgraded to the lat est sof tware by the firmw are ov er-the -air (FO T A) service. On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Mo re → About device → Sof tware upda te → Update .
50 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 51 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 52 • → T ransfer : Connect the first par ty to the second par ty . This disconnects you from the con versation. • → Manage confer ence call : Hav e a private con versation with one par ty during a multipar ty call or disconnect one par t y form the multipart y call.
Communication 53 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle, or press and hold the headset button. T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, drag the reject message bar upwar ds. T o creat e the rejection message, tap → Call settings → Set up call reject messages .
Communication 54 During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera. • Mute : T ur n off the microphone so tha t the other par ty cannot hear you. • End call : End the current call .
Communication 55 Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images . C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen.
Communication 56 Editing a con tac t Selec t a contact to edit, and then tap . Deleting a contact T ap → Delete . Setting a speed dial number T ap → Speed dial setting , select a speed dial number , and then select a contact for it. T o remov e a speed dial number , tap and hold it, and then tap Remov e .
Communication 57 Moving con tac ts Moving con tac ts to Google T ap → Merge acc ounts → Merge with Google . Contacts mov ed to Google Contacts appear with in the contacts list. Moving con tac ts to Samsung T ap → Merge acc ounts → Merge with Samsung .
Communication 58 C ontac t groups Adding c ontac ts to a gr oup Selec t a gr oup , and then tap . S elect contacts to add, and then tap Done . Managing groups T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Create : Make a new group . • Search : Search for c ontac ts.
Communication 59 Messaging Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messaging on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 60 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 61 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 62 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 63 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 64 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.

W eb & network 68 Bluetooth Bluetooth crea tes a direct wireless c onnection bet ween two devices o ver shor t distances. W eb & network 69 Screen Mirroring Use this f eature t o connect your device to a lar ge screen with an AllShar e Cast dongle or HomeSync and then shar e your cont ents. Y ou can also use this featur e with other devices that suppor t the Wi-F i Miracast featur e.
W eb & network 70 Sending files Send files to other devices or upload them to w eb storage ser vices. Selec t a device , tap , select files, and then tap Done . Sharing files Selec t a device or w eb storage , tap , select files, tap Done , and then select a sharing method.
W eb & network 71 Group Pla y Use this application to shar e screens with multiple devices. Cr eate or join a Group Pla y session, and then share images , documents, or music . 75 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding used.
Media 76 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 77 Camer a etiquette • Do not take photos or videos of other people without their permission. • Do not take photos or videos where legally pr ohibited. • Do not take photos or videos in places wher e you may viola te other people ’ s privacy .
Media 78 • Best face : Use this to take multiple g roup shots at the same time and combine them t o creat e the best possible image. T ap to take multiple photos . T o get the best shot, hold the camera steady and r emain still while taking photos.
Media 79 • P anorama : T ake a photo composed of man y photos strung together . T o get the best shot, f ollow these tips. – Move the camera slo wly in one direc tion.
Media 80 While rec ording , use the following actions: • T o change the f ocus, tap where you w ant to f ocus. T o focus on the c entre of the scr een, tap . • T o captur e an image from the video while r ecording , tap . Recor ding mode T ap → to change rec ording mode.
Media 81 Dual Camer a mode When you take a landscape phot o with the rear camera, the phot o or video of captured by the front camer a appears in an inset window , or vice versa. Use this f eature to take a beautiful landscape photo and a self-por trait simultaneously .

Move the start bracket to the desired starting point, move the end bracket to the desir ed ending point, and then sav e the video. Editing images When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing func tions: • F av ourite : Add the image t o favourites .
Media 86 Modifying images When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing functions: • Rot ate : Rotate the image . • Crop : Crop the image . • Colour : Adjust the satur ation or brightness of the image. • Effect : Apply effects to the image .
Media 87 Setting as wallpaper When viewing an image, tap → Set as to set the image as wallpaper or to assig n it to a contact. T agging fac es T ap → Settings , and then tick F ace tag . A yellow fr ame appears around the recognised face on an image .
Media 88 Crea ting recommended albums When you take phot os at one location, the device aut omatically sor ts your phot os into albums based on your specified criteria and suggests making the new albums. T ap → Settings → Home city , and then set a method for r ecognising your location.
Media 89 Editing images T ap the image of the page in an album. T o add a caption, tap . T o send the image to others , tap . T o delete the image , tap . T o apply eff ec ts to the image, tap . T o start a slideshow , tap → Slideshow → Star t slideshow .

Utilities 98 When jotting down a memo , tap once more to change the pen type, line thickness, or pen colour . When erasing the handwritten memo , tap , and then tap to change the eraser size or tap Clear all to clear the memo . View mor e colours. Change the line thickness.
Utilities 99 T o change the view mode , tap → List view . T o cr eate a memo by importing a file, tap → Impor t . T o export memos as another file format, tap → Expor t . T o cr eate a f older , tap → Crea te folder . T o mov e memos to another folder , tap → M ove .

En ter the location in the Location field, tap next to the field, and then pinpoint the pr ecise location by tapping and holding on the map that appears. Attach a memo fr om S Memo. T ap Memos , and then compose a new memo or select one of the existing memos.
Utilities 102 Changing calendar type Selec t one from among diff erent types of calendars including year , month, week, and others at the right side of the screen.

Utilities 104 Clock Use this application to set alarms , check the time in any location in the world, measur e the duration of an ev ent, set a timer , or use as the desk clock.
Utilities 105 Stopping alarms Drag outside the large cir cle to stop an alarm. Drag outside the lar ge circle to repeat the alarm after a specified length of time. Deleting alarms T ap and hold the alarm, and then tap Delete . W orld clock Crea ting clocks T ap Add city , and then enter a city name or select a cit y from the cities list.
Utilities 106 Calcula tor Use this application f or simple or complex calculations. T ap Calculat or on the Applications screen. Rotate the device t o landscape orientation to display the scien tific calculator . If Screen rotation is disabled, tap → Scientific calculator .
Utilities 107 V iewing rec ommended temperatur e and humidit y T ap → Comf or t level to view the ideal en vironment f or temperature and humidity that the device rec ommends. • Measure the tempera ture and humidity in a stable indoor envir onment.
Utilities 108 C onfiguring settings for S Health T ap → Settings , and then select one of the following: • Edit profile : Edit your ph ysical statistics. • Security : Set a PIN to lock or unlock S Health. • Unit settings : Set unit options.
