Getting star ted 8 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . • Only microSIM car ds work with the device . • Some L TE ser vices may not be available depending on the service provider .
Getting star ted 11 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d into the slot until it locks in place . • Do not remov e the protective tape cov ering the antenna, as this can damage the antenna.
Getting star ted 12 Removing the SIM or USIM car d and battery 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the ba tter y . 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Replace the back cov er . Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 17 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Mo re → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 18 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation.
19 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.

Basics 21 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 22 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Motions and gestures → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right.
Basics 24 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contact details, pick up and hold the device to y our ear to make a call.
Basics 25 P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 26 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 27 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . Air Gesture Use this f eature t o control functions without touching the scr een.
Basics 28 Air jump While viewing emails or webpages , move your hand up or do wn across the sensor to scr oll the page up or down. Air br ow se Move y our hand to the left or right across the sensor to br owse images , webpages, songs, or memos.
Basics 29 Air mo ve T ap and hold an icon with one hand , and then move y our other hand to the lef t or right across the sensor to mo ve the icon to another location. While using the daily or weekly calendar , tap and hold an event, and then mov e your other hand to the left or right to mov e the event to another da y or week .
Basics 30 Air V iew On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Air view , and then drag the Air view switch to the right. P oint at an item with your finger to pr eview the content or view inf ormation in a pop-up window . When you poin t at an area on a w ebpage for a few seconds , the device magnifies the area.
Basics 31 Samsung Smar t S cr oll On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Smar t screen → Smar t scroll , and then drag the Smar t scroll switch to the right. While viewing emails or webpages , tilt your head downw ards or upw ards to scr oll in that direction.
Basics 32 A c tiva ting Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run two applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w panel can run. • When launching applications that c ontain multimedia files, such as music or videos, sound fr om both files will be play ed.
Basics 33 Using Multi W indow applications While using Multi Windo w applications, tap or and use one of the follo wing: • : Switch loca tions between Multi Window applica tions. • : Maximise the window to fit the screen. • : Close the application.
Basics 34 • P ower saving : Activate or deactivate po wer-sa ving mode. • Screen Mirroring : Activate or deactivate the scr een mir roring f eature. • Multi window : Set to use Multi Window . The av ailable options may vary depending on the region or ser vice pro vider .
Basics 35 Moving an item T ap and hold an item and drag it t o a new location. T o move it to another panel , drag it to the side of the screen. Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen.
Basics 36 Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen. On the Home screen, pr ess the Menu button, tap Set wallpaper → Home screen , and then select one of the following: • Galler y : See photos taken by the device ’ s camera or images do wnloaded from the Internet.
Basics 37 L ocked scr een The locked screen pr events the device fr om unwan ted operation when not in use and also allows y ou to add conv enient widgets. A dding widgets T o use widgets when the scr een is locked, on the Applications scr een, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een , and then tick Multiple widgets .
Basics 38 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 39 Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience . Pr ess the M enu button, tap Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to Create folder . Enter a f older name and then tap OK . Put applica tions into the new f older by dragging , and then tap S ave to sav e the ar rangement.
Basics 40 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 41 Changing language ke yboards Add languages t o the keyboard, and then slide the spac e key lef t or right to change language keyboards . Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a wor d with a finger . Suggested wor ds appear as characters are ent ered.
Basics 42 C opying and pasting T ap and hold ov er text, drag or to select more or less text, and then tap Cop y to cop y or Cut to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. T o paste it in to a text entr y field, tap and hold a t the point where it should be inserted, and then tap P aste .
Basics 43 F orgetting W i-Fi net w orks Any network that has ev er been used, including the current network, can be forgott en so the device will not automatically c onnec t to it.
Basics 44 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 45 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 46 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 47 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
48 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 49 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 50 • Menu button → Con tacts : Open the contacts list. • Menu button → Memo : Creat e a memo. • Menu button → Message : Send a message. • Menu button → T ransfer : Connect the first par ty to the second par ty .
Communication 51 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle, or pr ess the headset button. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold .
Communication 52 Call f or warding The device can be set t o send incoming calls to a specified number . Pr ess the M enu button, tap Call settings → Additional settings → Call f or warding , and then select a call t ype and condition. Ent er a number and tap Enable .
Communication 53 T ap and hold the other par ty ’ s image to access the f ollowing options: • Captur e image : Capture the other party ’ s image . This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider . • Record video : T ake a video of the other par ty ’ s images.
Communication 54 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and ent er contact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 55 Once a contact is selected, take one of the f ollowing actions: • : Add t o favourite c ontac ts. • / : Make a voice or video call. • : Compose a message . • : Compose an email . Displaying c ontac ts By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts on the device, the SIM or USIM car d, or another account .
Communication 56 Expor ting contacts Pr ess the M enu button, and then tap Impor t/Expor t → Expor t to SIM card , Expor t to SD card , or Expor t to USB stor age . Sharing con tac ts Pr ess the M enu button, tap Impor t/Expor t → Share namecar d via , select contacts, tap Done , and then select a sharing method.
Communication 57 • Delete gr oups : Selec t user-added gr oups, and then tap Delete . Default groups cannot be deleted. • Help : Ac cess help information about using c ontac ts. Sending a message or email to a group ’ s members Selec t a gr oup , press the Menu button, tap Send message or Send email , select members, and then tap Done .
Communication 58 Use the f ollowing methods to make a multimedia message: • T ap and attach images , videos, contacts, memos, ev ents, and others. • Pr ess the M enu button, and then tap Add subject to enter a subject. Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , press the Menu button, and then tap Scheduled message .
Communication 59 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 60 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 61 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter r ecipients, a subject, and a message, and then tap . Pr ess the M enu button, and then tap Attach picture to attach images . Pr ess the M enu button, and then tap Attach video to attach videos .
Communication 62 T alk (Hangouts) Use this application to cha t with others. T ap T alk ( Hangouts ) on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . Selec t a friend from the friends list or enter da ta to search and select a friend from the r esults to star t chatting .
Communication 63 ChatON Use this application to cha t with any devic e. T o use this application, you must sig n in to your Samsung account. T ap ChatON on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
64 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . Pr ess the M enu button to shar e, sav e, or print the curren t webpage while viewing a w ebpage.
W eb & network 65 Sharing w ebpages T o shar e a webpage addr ess with others, pr ess the Menu button, and then tap Share via . T o shar e a par t of a webpage , tap and hold the desired te xt, and then tap Share . Chr ome Use this application to sear ch for information and br owse webpages .
W eb & network 66 Bluetooth Bluetooth crea tes a direct wireless c onnection bet ween two devices o ver shor t distances. W eb & network 67 Screen Mirroring Use this f eature t o connect your device to a lar ge screen with an AllShar e Cast dongle or HomeSync and then shar e your cont ents. Y ou can also use this featur e with other devices that suppor t the Wi-F i Miracast featur e.
W eb & network 68 Sending files Send files to other devices or upload them to w eb storage ser vices. Selec t a device , tap , select files, tap Done , and then select a device or web storage . Sharing files Selec t a device or w eb storage , tap , select files, tap Done , and then select a sharing method.
W eb & network 69 Group Pla y Use this application to shar e screens with multiple devices. Cr eate or join a Group Pla y session, and then share images , documents, or music . W eb & network 70 NFC Y our device allows you t o read near field communication (NFC) tags that contain inf ormation about products. Y ou can also use this f eature t o make payments and buy tickets f or transpor tation or ev ents after downloading the requir ed applications.
W eb & network 71 S Beam Use this f eature t o send data, such as videos, images , and documents. Do not send copyright-pr otec ted data via S Beam. Doing so may violat e copyright laws . Samsung is not responsible for an y liabilities caused by the illegal use of copyright ed data.
W eb & network 72 C onnec ting to a T V Connect to a T V to display the device ’ s scr een onto a large surface and control the T V remotely with the devic e. Selec t a country and a region. T ap → Set Up Now , and then follo w the on-screen instructions to register the T V to the device .
73 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 74 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , press the Menu button, and then tap Settings → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 75 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 81) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 76 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 77 • Eraser : Use this to erase the mo vements of moving subjects in the background . T ap to take a series of photos . The device er ases traces of mov ement from a moving subject. T o rest ore the original photo , tap Show mo ving objects , and then tap the highlighted ar ea.
Media 78 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap to take a video . T o pause r ecording , tap . T o stop rec ording , tap . While rec ording , use the following actions: • T o change the f ocus, tap where you w ant to f ocus. T o focus on the c entre of the scr een, tap .
Media 79 Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 80 C onfiguring settings for Camer a T ap → to configur e settings for Camera. Not all of the f ollowing options are available in both still camera and video camera modes . The av ailable options var y depending on the mode used. • Photo size / V ideo size : Selec t a resolution.
Media 81 • White balanc e : Selec t an appropriat e white balance , so images have a true -to-life colour range. The settings are desig ned for specific lighting situa tions. These settings are similar to the heat range f or white -balance exposure in pr ofessional cameras .
Media 82 V iewing images Launching Galler y displays a vailable folders. When another application, such as Email , sav es an image, the Download folder is aut omatically creat ed to contain the image. Likewise , capturing a screenshot automatically cr eates the Screenshots folder .
Media 83 Editing images When viewing an image, pr ess the M enu button and use the f ollowing func tions: • F av ourite : Add the image t o favourites . • Slideshow : Star t a slideshow with the images in the curren t folder . • Photo fr ame : Use this to write a not e below the image .
Media 84 • Effect : Apply effects to the image . • P or trait : Correct red-eye , adjust and retouch fac es, or make backgr ound blur r y . • Sticker : Attach stickers . • Drawing : Draw on the image . • F rame : Apply frames to the image .
Media 85 T agging fac es Pr ess the M enu button, tap Settings , and then tick F ace tag . A yellow fr ame appears around the recog nised face on an image. T ap the face , tap Add name , and then select or add a contact. When the face tag appears on an image , tap the face tag and use available options, such as making calls or sending messages.
Media 86 Crea ting recommended albums When you take phot os at one location, the device aut omatically sor ts your phot os into albums based on your specified criteria and suggests making the new albums. Pr ess the M enu button, tap Settings → Home city , and then set a method for r ecognising your location.
Media 87 Editing images T ap the image of the page in an album. T o add a caption, tap . T o send the image to others , tap . T o delete the image , tap . T o apply eff ec ts to the image, tap . T o start a slideshow , press the Menu button, and then tap Slideshow → Star t slideshow .
Media 88 Pla ying videos Selec t a video to pla y . Change screen ratio . Move f or wards or backwards by dragging the bar . Scan DLNA- enabled devices. Restar t the current video or skip to the previous video . T ap and hold to mov e backwards quickly .

Utilities 95 When jotting down a memo , tap once more to change the pen type, line thickness, or pen colour . When erasing the handwritten memo , tap once more t o change the eraser size or tap Clear all to clear the memo . View mor e colours. Change the line thickness.
Utilities 96 T o change the or der of memos, pr ess the Menu button, and then tap Change order . T o mov e memos to another folder , press the Menu button, and then tap M ove . T o cop y memos, press the Menu button, and then tap Cop y . T o change the S Memo settings, pr ess the M enu button, and then tap Settings .

Utilities 101 Clock Use this application to set alarms , check the time in any location in the world, measur e the duration of an ev ent, set a timer , or use as the desk clock.
Utilities 102 Stopping alarms Drag outside the large cir cle to stop an alarm. Drag outside the lar ge circle to repeat the alarm after a specified length of time. Deleting alarms T ap and hold the alarm, and then tap Delete . W orld clock Crea ting clocks T ap Add city , and then enter a city name or select a cit y from the cities list.
Utilities 103 Calcula tor Use this application f or simple or complex calculations. T ap Calculat or on the Applications screen. Rotate the device t o landscape orientation to display the scien tific calculator . If Screen rotation is disabled, pr ess the Menu button, and then tap Scientific calculator .
Utilities 104 Checking your health inf ormation Y ou can view your information on the health board scr een. S elect one of the following t o view details: • Calories burnt : View ho w many calories y ou have burned . • Calorie intak e : View ho w many calories y ou have ingest ed.
Utilities 105 C onfiguring settings for S Health T ap → Settings , and then select one of the following: • Edit profile : Edit your ph ysical statistics. • Security : Set a PIN to lock or unlock S Health. • Unit settings : Set unit options.
