1 Introduction Congratula tions on your purchase of the Samson UB1 USB boundary microphone! The UB1 is a low profile, sur face -mount, boundar y microphone featuring a fixed charge condenser element along with an onboard, high quality Analog-to-Digital conv er ter and USB output.
2 UB1 Features • Sur face mount "Boundar y" Condenser with USB Digital Output. • Compatible with any computer based Digital Audio W orkstation. • The extremely detailed sound reproduction makes it ideal for recording vocals, acoustic instruments and just about any other sound source.
3 Installing the UB1 Installing the UB1 is a simple procedure that takes just a few minutes. Since the UB1 is USB compliant, you can use either a MAC or PC, connect the included USB cable and plug and play. Y ou will be able to control your UB1 using the standard audio inter face controls in the MAC or Windows operating system.
4 Installing the UB1 Getting Started with W indows XP 1. The first time you plug the UB1 into a USB port, W indows will install the universal drivers f or that port. A balloon tip will pop up, t elling you it has found the USB Audio codec (figur e 1).

T o use the UB1 as your default input device (for pr ograms like Sound Recorder), ensure that it is set for rec ording in the Audio tab (figure 4). 6. The internal, computer c ontrolled gain can then be set by pressing the Volume button (figur e 5).
6 Getting Started with MAC OS X The following example is f or setting up the UB1 in MA C OS X . 1. Plug in microphone. The LED will light to indicate it is r eceiving USB power . The MAC will rec ognize the USB audio device and automatically install a universal driver .
7 Operating the UB1 Po wering the UB1 The UB1 is a condenser microphone, and like all condenser microphones, it has inter- nal elec tronics that require an active power supply . T raditional studio condensers are almost always powered by a Phantom Po wer supply which is usually derived from the mixing console.
8 Setting Up the Signal Lev el Y ou can adjust the UB1's internal digitally controlled analog I nput G ain stage by using the UB1 soft ware, or you can control the input gain by using the software control in your computer's operating system and/or digital audio workstation.
