Startin g and drivi ng If you m ove the sel ector lever from D to L, dow nchanges will follow a set pa ttern to avoi d damaging the engine or transmis sion. Manual gear-changin g is not recomm ended on slip pery roads. If one of the drive whe els spins exc essively, th e engine torque will be reduc ed to avoid dam aging the tra nsmission.
S tar ting an d drivin g SPORT and WI N TER modes T o select Sport mode, pres s the ”S” b utton on the selec tor le ver when the select or lev er is in position N or D .
Startin g and drivi ng Cruise control For safe ty reasons (br ake system func- tion) the brak es must be ap plied once, when the engine has started, before the cruise control system c an be activated . The sys tem is operated by means of the controls on the stal k switch: • ON/OFF (s witch on/off ).
.
Startin g and drivi ng ABS b rakes ABS (antiloc k braking system) modulate s the br ake press ure to the respe ctive whee ls. Wh eel sens ors de tec t if a wh eel is about to lock , and the cont rol module redu ces th e pres sur e to that whee l an d then increas es it once m ore unt il the t endency is detected again.
S tar ting an d drivin g The ABS sy s tem has a built-in diagnostic function which will s witch on the An ti-lock brake warn ing light if a fault is d e tecte d in the sys tem (see page 58).
Startin g and drivi ng Traction Control Sys tem How the syst em works The tract ion control sys tem (TCS) is designe d to preve nt wheelspin . This enables the car to ac hieve the best pos sible grip and, hence, maxim u m tracti ve effort, together with grea ter stability.
S tar ting an d drivin g Turning the TCS off The TCS is swit che d on aut omat icall y when the engi ne is started . The sys tem can be switched off manually b y the TCS button, whereup on on the main in strument pan el will come on. The TCS sy stem cannot be switche d off if t he car is trave lling faster tha n 35 mph (60 km/h).
Startin g and drivi ng ESP indicator light The indicator ligh t in the tach ometer comes on for a s hort period of time wh en the ESP system i s operati v e. Operation o f the ESP indicate s reduced cohesi on between the tires and the road, and that extra care should be tak en by the driver.
S tar ting an d drivin g Economical mot oring Factors affecting f ue l consumption Fuel cons umpti on i s grea tly affe cted b y th e gener al driving condition s, the way in which the car i s driven and a t what speeds , the weathe r, the state of the road, th e condition of th e car, etc.
Startin g and drivi ng • Driving in a low gear re sults in higher f uel consum ption than in a high gear bec ause of the higher e ngine speed for a given road spee d. Alwa ys change up to a higher gear as soon as tr affic condi tions allo w and use the highest g ear as m uch as pos- si bl e.
S tar ting an d drivin g • Chec k the anti-fre eze in t he engine cool- ant, see page 206. The car´ s trip com puter will warn you when there is a risk of slippery cond itions.

S tar ting an d drivin g Trailer we ight Maxim um recommended trailer weights fo r differ ent gradie nts, with a vi ew to comfort and dr ivability for m anual and auto matic cars, are sh own o n the d rawi ng.
Startin g and drivi ng Use Normal mode when d riving with a trailer or trailer on hilly roads . The adaptiv e gear change pat tern function will preve nt the tran smis sion f rom ov erh eati ng. Rises in coolant tem perature are i ndicated by the tempera ture gauge in the main instru - ment pan el.
S tar ting an d drivin g Trailer hitc h load The weig ht distribution on the trailer ma kes a lot of differe nce to the handli ng proper ties of the c ar and trailer com bination. As regards sin gle-axle trailers , wheneve r pos- sible, co ncentrate the load over the wheel s and kee p it as low as possible.
Startin g and drivi ng Driving with a roof rac k load The max imum permissib le roof load i s 220 lbs. (100 kg). Note th at the roof lo ad is included in the car’s ma ximum perm issible load (see page 258). Strong, st urdy roof carriers designed spe - cially for the car ar e available from your Saab deal er.
