4 Display Panel This section describes configuration us ing the display panel when the printer function is selected. 1. Operational status or messages Displays current machine status, such as “ Ready ”, “ Offline ”, and “ P lease wait... ”.
5 Reading the Display and Using Keys This section explains how to read the display and usi ng the select ion key for th e initial display. 1. Scroll keys Press to move the cursor in each direc- tion, step by step. When the {U} , {T} , {V} , or {W} key ap- pears in this manual, press the scroll key of the same direction.
6 Printer Features Menu The following explains settings and mean ings of functions on Printer Feature. Printer Feature screen appears when you press the { User Tools/Counter } ke y.
7 Job Separation You can enable Job Separation. This menu can be selected only when a fin- isher (optional) is installed. Memory Usage You can select the amount of memory used in Font Priority or Frame Priority, according to paper size or resolution. Duplex You can select to have print on both sides of each page.
8 ❖ Host Interf ace ❖ PCL Menu ❖ PS Menu (optional) ❖ PDF Menu (optional) Menu Description I/O Buffer You can set the size of the I/O Buffer. Nor- mally it is not necessary to change this set- ting. I/O Timeout You can set how many seconds the machine should wait before ending a print job.
9 Note ❒ Depending on which optional unit s yo u have installed or the printer lan- guage you have selected, some options are not displayed. ❒ Depending on the security settings, you might not be able to set certain op- tions. 10 Setting Paper on the Bypass Tray This section g ives instruc tions fo r setting paper on the bypass tray. For details about paper size and paper type, see “Recommended Paper Sizes and Types”, About This Machine.
11 B Lift up the paper guide release lever. 1. Paper guide release lever C Adjust the paper guides to the paper size, and then gently insert paper face down into the bypass tray. 1. Extender 2. Paper guides • Open out the extender to suppo r t paper sizes larger than A4 L , 8 1 / 2 × 11 L .
12 D Push down the paper guide release lever. E Set the paper size using the printe r driver or the control panel. Note ❒ Paper within the following dimensi ons can be set in the bypass tray: • Vertical: 90 - 297 mm (3.55 - 11.69 in.) • Horizontal: 148 - 600 mm (5.
13 Setting the Paper Size Using the Control Panel This procedure describes how to set paper size of the bypass tray using the con- trol panel. If you select the printer driver to set paper size, this procedure is not necessary. A Press the { User Tools/Counter } key.
14 Reference See the printer driver Help a bout the settings from the printer drivers. Select paper type when printing onto OHP transparencies or thick paper. For details, see p.16 “Setting Thick Pa per or OHP Transparencies Using the Contro l Panel”.

16 Setting Thick Paper or OHP Tran sparencies Usi ng the Control Panel The following procedures are not required if you select the printer driver for the settings.
17 E Select paper type from the menu using {T} or {U} , and then press the { OK } key. F Press the { User Tools/Counter } key to return to the default screen. Note ❒ The settings made will remain valid until they are reset again. After print- ing on thick paper or OHP Transparencies, be sure to clear settings for the next user.
18 E Select [ Thick Paper ] using the {U} or {T} key, and then press the { OK } key. F Select [ Printer Bypass Paper Size ] using the {U} or {T} key, and then press the { OK } key. G Select the paper envelope size, and then press the { OK } key. H Press the { User Tools/Counter } key to return to the default screen.

Printing a PDF File Directly 75 3 PDF Direct Printing Use the method below to print PDF files directly. A Drag the PDF file you want to print to the PDF Direct Printing icon in the palette and drop it there. B [ Output File List-PDF Direct Print ] is displayed.
Other Print Operations 76 3 PDF Direct Print Properties 1. Setting name: Displays the plug-in configuration name (up to 63 single byte characters) 2. Change Icon... Changes the icon displayed on the tool bar. 3. Printer: Displays a list of RPCS drivers that sup- port PDF direct printing.
Unauthorized Copy Control 77 3 Unauthorized Copy Control To prevent unauthorized copying, you can embed patterns and text beneath the print. You do not need a special paper to use this function.

Unauthorized Copy Control 79 3 ❖ Printing a document using [ Data security for copying ] 1. The pattern and text you have set is printed. 2. The document is copied or stored in copiers / multifunction machines which the Copy Data Security unit is installed.
Other Print Operations 80 3 Using [ Mask type: ] You can embed patterns and text in a document by setting in the printer driver to prevent unauthorized copying. ❖ Setting [ Mask type: ] in the printer driver • Select a pattern from [ Mask type: ] , and then enter text in the [ Text: ] box.
Unauthorized Copy Control 81 3 Note ❒ Only the RPCS printer driver is supported. ❒ You cannot partially embed patterns and text strings in a document. ❒ To make the embedded pattern clear, set the character size at least 50 pt (pref- erably 70 to 80 pt) and character an gle to between 3 0 and 40 degrees.
Other Print Operations 82 3 Form Feed This section give s in structions for operating the ma chine when there is no tray for the selected paper size or type, or when paper l oaded in the machine has run out.
Form Feed 83 3 C Select the tray for form feed using {T} or {U} from those that appear on the display panel, and then press the { OK } key. If you want to print after adding paper to the tray, select the tray afte r loading the correct paper. The machine prints using t he selected tray.
Other Print Operations 84 3 Note ❒ If the machine is shared by multiple computers, be careful not to acciden- tally cancel someone else's print job. ❒ Under Windows, If the machine is co nnected to the computer using a par- allel cable, sent print jobs may be canceled if [ JobReset ] is pressed while “Waiting.

Checking the Error Log 87 3 Checking the Error Log If files could not be stored due to printing errors, identify the cause of the errors by checking the error lo g on the control panel. Important ❒ The most recent 30 errors are stor ed in the error log.

Important ❒ Make option settings for the machine using the printer dr iver when bidirec- tional communication is disabled.
Collate 89 3 Collate When printing multiple do cuments such as handouts for meetings, you can sep- arate sets into order. This function is known as “Collate”.

Staple 91 3 Staple With the optional finisher sets can be stapled individually when printing multi- ple sets. Staple Position The specified staple position varies depe nding on paper size, type, quantity and feed orientation.
