Place the treadmill on a level surface, with at least eight feet of clearance behind it and two feet on each side.
2 1. Do not change the incline of the treadmill by p lacing objects under the treadmill. 22. When folding or moving the treadmill, make sure that the storage latch is fully closed. 23. Inspect and properly tighten all parts of the treadmill regularly.

A nd wh en you ’re not exercising, the unique 8400 C tre admil l can be folded up, requiring less than half the floor space than traditional treadmills.
ASSEMBL Y A ssembly requires two persons. S et the treadmill in a cleared area and remove all packing materials. Do not dispose of the packing materials until assembly is completed. Assembly requires the included allen wrench and your own phillips screwdriver , wire cutters , and rubber mallet .
7 2. Insert the tab on one of the Handrail Brackets (70) into the indicated slot in the right Upright (69). Attach the H andrail Bracket with a 3/4” Tek Screw (65). A ttach the other Handrail Bracket (not shown) to the left Upright (not shown) the same way.
8 8. Make sure that all parts are properly tightened before you use the treadmill. Note: Extra hardware may be included. Keep the included allen wrench in a secure place; the allen wrench is used to adjust the walking belt (see page 23). To protect the floor or carpet from damage, place a mat under the treadmill.
9 If you purchase the optional chest pulse sensor (see page 19), follo w the steps below to i nstall the re- ceive r inc luded with the chest pulse sensor. 1 . M ake sure that the power cord is unplugged. R emove the indicated screws from the Console Back (88).
10 OPERA TION AND ADJUSTMENT T HE PRE-LUBRICATED WALKING BELT Your treadmill features a walking belt coated with high- performance lubricant. IMPORTANT: Never apply sil- i cone spray or other substances to the walking b elt or the walking platform. Such substances will deteriorate the walking belt and cause excessive wear.
1 1 FEATURES OF THE CONSOLE The treadmill console offers an impressive array of features designed to make your workouts more effective. When the manual mode of the console is selected, you can change the speed and incline of the treadmill with the touch of a button.
12 HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER P lug in the power cord (see page 10). Next, locate t he reset/off circuit breaker on the treadmill near the power cord. Make sure that the circuit breaker is in the reset position. Next, stand on the foot rails of the treadmill.
13 The lower right corner of the display will show t he distance that you have walked or run, t he elapsed time, your pace in minutes per mile, and the speed of the walking belt.
14 H OW TO USE A PERSONAL TRAINER PROGRAM I nsert the key into the console. S ee HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER on page 12. S elect one of the personal trainer programs.
15 Measure your heart rate if desired. See step 6 on page 13. Turn on the fans if desired. S ee step 7 on page 13. When you are finished exercising, remove the key from the console. When the program ends, make sure that the in- cline of the treadmill is at the lowest setting.
16 H OW TO USE A CUSTOM PROGRAM I nsert the key into the console. S ee HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER on page 12. S elect one of the custom programs. To select a custom program, press Custom & Heart Rate C ontro l Programs button repeatedly; “P-11” or “P-12” will appear in t he pr iorit y disp lay for a few seconds.
H OW TO USE A HEART RATE PROGRAM Follow the steps below to use a heart rate program. Put on the optional chest pulse sensor. You must wear the optional chest pulse sensor to use a heart rate program. Insert the key into the console. See HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER on page 12.
18 When the first segment ends, all target heart rate settings will move one column to the left. The tar- g et heart rate setting for the second segment will then be shown in the flashing Current Segment c olumn. During each heart rate program, the console will regularly compare your heart rate to the target heart rate setting.
19 THE INFORMATION MODE/DEMO MODE T he console features an information mode that keeps track of treadmill usage information. The information m ode also allows you to select miles or kilometers as the unit of measurement and to turn on and turn off the demo mode.
20 HOW T O FOLD AND MOVE THE TREADMILL H OW TO FOLD THE TREADMILL FOR STORAGE Before folding the treadmill, adjust the incline to the lowest position. If this is not done, the treadmill may be p ermanently damaged. Next, unplug the power cord. CAUTION: You must be able to safely lift 45 pounds (20 kg) to raise, lower, or move the treadmill.
21 HOW TO LOWER THE TREADMILL FOR USE 1 . Hold the upper end of the treadmill with your right hand a s shown. Using your left hand, pull the latch knob to the left and hold it. Pivot the treadmill down until the frame is past the pin on the lock knob.
TROUBLESHOOTING Most treadmill problems can be solved by following the steps below. Find the symptom that applies, and follow the steps listed. If further assistance is needed, see the front cover of this manual. PROBLEM: The power does not turn on SOLUTION: a.
23 PROBLEM: The walking belt slows when walked on S OLUTION: a . Use only a single-outlet surge suppressor that meets all of the specifications described on page 10. b . If the walking belt is overtightened, treadmill perfor- mance may decrease and the walking belt may be- come damaged.
24 CONDITIONING GUIDELINES The following guidelines will help you to plan your ex- ercise program. For more detailed exercise informa- tion, obtain a reputable book or consult your physician.
25 SUGGESTED STRETCHES T he correct form for several basic stretches is shown at the right. Move slowly as you stretch—never bounce. 1 . Toe Touch Stretch Stand with your knees bent slightly and slowly bend forward from your hips. Allow your back and shoulders to relax as you reach down toward your toes as far as possible.
