7 IN S TALLING A BACKUP BATTE RY If the A C p ower fails or you unplug t he TAD , a 9V backup ba ttery (not supplied) saves t he messa ges, time and day set- tings, and the CB T and remote opera- tion security codes . We recommend you use a n alkaline battery, such as Ra- dioS hack Cat.
8 SETTING THE DAY AND TI M E When you set the TAD-798’ s clock, the TAD records the d ay and tim e each memo and mes sage is recorded . Notes : • T o avo id losing the day and time settings if AC .
9 SETTING THE NUMBER OF RI NG S Set the ring select switch on the ri ght side of t he TAD to 2 , 4 , 7 , or TS to se t how long the T AD waits before it an- swers a call ( 2 rings, 4 rings , 7 ri ngs , or toll -saver). If you plan to check your messag es by long dist ance, set the ring select switch to TS (see “Toll-Saver” on Page 17 ).
10 BASIC O PERATION RECORDING T HE OUTGOING MESSAGES Before the TAD can answer call s and record mess ages, you must record an outgoing message (OGM ). The TA D- 798 lets you record two separate mes- sages, and it o perates diff erently based on the m e ssage you select (see “Using the Anno unce-Onl y Feat ure” on Page 11).
11 If no outgo ing message is recorded when you press OGM 1 or OGM 2 , the T AD annou nces “Y ou have no an- nounc ement one” (or “t wo”) and sounds four beeps. SETTI NG THE T AD TO ANSWER CALLS To set the T AD to answer or not answer calls, press ANSWER .
12 RECORDING IN COM ING MESSAGES Each i ncoming message can be up to 60 seconds long. At 55 se conds t he TAD b eeps to no ti fy t he caller that t ime will soon be u p. At 60 second s it sounds one long and four short beep s, says “Thank you for your call,” and hangs up.
13 To repl ay a mes sage while you a re lis- teni ng to it, p ress REPEA T . T he cu rrent mess age replays from the beginning. To return to a previous message, h old down REPEA T until the desired mes- sage number appe ars in the m essage coun ter wi nd ow.
14 2. Press STOP when you finish the memo (or let the T A D automatically stop recording after 60 seconds). The T AD beeps once and res ets t o answer calls. Th e memo is st o red wi th the i nc omi ng messag es. To hear the m emo, simp ly play back your messag es.
15 SCREENING CALLS To scree n c a lls, let the T AD answer, then listen to the caller’s message through the T AD’s speaker. To adj ust the T AD’s volume, slide VOLUME to - ward + or – . If you do not want to take the call, sim- ply let the TAD finish r e cording the cal l- er’s message.
16 4. Repeatedl y press SKIP or REPEA T to set the second digit, the n press STOP . The third digit appears. 5. Repeatedl y press SKIP or REPEA T to set the third digi t, t h en press STOP . The T AD sounds a l ong beep then announ ces and displays the new CBT code.
17 REMOTE OPE RATION You can op erate the TAD from alm ost any touch-t one phone, o r from a rotary phone us ing a pocket tone-dialer (avail- able at your local RadioShack store). 20 T ROUBLESHOOTI NG W e do not expe ct you t o have any problems with y our TAD-798, but if you do, try t hese suggestions. If the TA D still doesn’t operate properly, try resetting it (see “Resetting the TAD” on P age 21 ) or ta ke it to your lo cal RadioShac k store for assistan c e.
21 RESETTI NG THE T AD If your TAD stops working properly, re- set it by using a straightened paper clip to press RESET o n the bac k of the T AD. Note : The ou tgoing mes sages and a ll information st ored in memory are erased when you press RESET . 43-7 98.
