Tape Full Detection — sign al caller when the message capacity is fu ll. VOX (Voice-Activated Reco rding) — stops recording after 7 second s of silence to conserve t ape space f or oth - er messages.
5 READ THIS FIRST We have designed the TAD- 716 to conform to f ederal regulations, and you can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device you co nnect to the phone line draws power from t he phone line. We refer to this power draw as the dev ice's Ringer Equ ivalence N umber, or REN.

7 PREPARATION SELECTING A LOCATION The TAD-716 is designed to rest on a flat surface such as a desktop o r countert op. Select a location tha t is: • near an accessible AC outlet • near a modular te lephone line jack If the phone line jack is no t a modular jack, you must up- date the wiring .
8 1. T urn the supplied cas- sette's hub with a pencil to take up any tape slack. 2. Lift open th e cassette compartment door , then remove and discard the tape card from inside the compartment. 3. Put the cas sette in the c ompartment with its full r eel at the left side and its open ed ge to the left of the T AD-716.
9 CONNECTING POWER 1. Plug the supplied AC a dapte r into a sta ndard AC out - let. 2. Rotate VOLUME counterclockwise until it clicks to turn on th e T AD-71 6. The message indicator turns on while th e TAD-716 checks for an outgoing me ssag e. If an outgoin g message is already r ecorded, t he TAD-716 automatically pl ays it back.
10 RECORDING THE OUTGOING MESSAGE Before you can use the TAD-716 , you must record the outgoing m essage. The maximum length for yo ur outgo- ing message is 60 seconds. Hint: To help prot ect you r home or office, do not tell call- ers you are away. In stead, say you canno t come to the phone at this t ime.
11 4. When you finish recordin g, release OGM REC . The T AD-716 plays back t he outgoing message t o you. Then it is ready to receive incoming calls. 5. Adjust VOLUME to a comforta ble listening level. You can press OGM REC at any t ime to hear t he outgoing message.
12 BASIC OPERATION Rotate VOL UME o n the side of the TAD -716 counte r- clockwise until it clicks to turn on the TAD-716. When the message indicator light s steadily and no tones sound, th e TAD-716 is ready to answer calls.
13 If the inco ming message tape is full, the TAD-716 an- swers a call after 10 rings, plays back the outgoing me s- sage, then waits 7 seconds for you to enter the remote operation se curity code. If you do not enter the corre ct code, the TAD-71 6 be eps and hangs up.
14 PLAYING MESSAGES The maximum leng th for each message is 60 seconds. The message indicator flashes when you ha ve messag- es. Press PLA Y to hear your messages. The TAD-716 plays back your me ssages in the order t hey were received. Af - ter the last me ssage has played, playb ack stops and the message indicator lights st eadily.
15 T o Fast-Forward During Playback Hold down OGM REC until you reach the message yo u want. Playback resumes wh en you release OGM REC . Note: If you hold the key down until the end of t he tape, the TAD-716 rewinds and stops. T o Rewind During Playback Hold down PLA Y .
16 POWER FAILURE PROTECTION If an AC power fa ilure occurs, or the power plu g comes out of the wa ll, th e TAD-716 sh uts down unt il power is re - stored. When power is restored, any messages recor ded before the power failure will be saved and the message indicator flashes.
17 REMOTE OPERATION While you are away fr om your home or offi ce, you can operate the TAD-716 using a touch- tone phone or a pulse phone with a pocket tone dialer. Carry the supplied Remote Operation Card in your wallet or purse for refer- ence when using the T A D-716 from a remo te location.
18 REMOTE MESSAGE PLAYBACK 1. Call your phone number from a touch-tone pho ne. After the T AD-716 answers, it plays the ou tgoing message, sounds a se ries of beeps, then one lon g tone.
19 After 5 secon ds, the T AD-716 so unds a single long beep. Y ou can leave a remote memo (u p to 1 mi nute) or enter you r three-dig it security code to re play the incoming messa ges again. 3. T o end playback, simply hang up. All messages ar e automatically saved an d the T AD-716 resets itself t o answer the next incoming call.
20 T OLL SAVER The TAD-716 has a built- in automatic toll-savin g feature. It answers in 4 r ings if there are no new or saved mes- sages, or 2 r ings if you ha ve messages to review. Th is feature lets yo u know if you have re ceived any mess ages before it answers, thus saving long distance costs.
21 T ROUBLESHOOTING We do not expect you to have any problems with th e TAD-716, b ut if you do , be sure you installed th e tape correctly and turned on the TAD-716. If you still have a problem, this chart might help . If not, take the TAD-7 16 to your local Radio Shack stor e for assista nce.
22 The T AD-716 does not respond to any button. T urn on the T AD-716 by rotating VOLUME counter- clockwise so the message indicator lights. Reset the T AD-716 by unplugging the AC adapter from the A C outlet then plug- ging it in again . Outgoing message sounds distor ted.
23 Continuous tone sounds. Record an outgoing mes- sage (see “Recording the Outgoing Message” on P age 10). Unplug the adapter from the A C outlet, replace the tape, then plug the adapter back into the A C outlet. The message indicator blinks continuously , b ut there are f ew er than fiv e incoming messages.
24 CARE AND MAINTENANCE To enjoy your Ra dioShack TAD-716 Sing le Microcas- sette Answer ing System for a long time: • Keep the T AD-716 dry . If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately . • Use and stor e the T AD-716 on ly in normal tem pera- ture envi ronments.
25 CLEANING THE T APE-HANDLING PARTS To restore the soun d quality, you must insp ect and clean the tape he ad. Dirt, dust , or particles of the tape' s coating can accumulate on the tape heads and ot her parts that the tape touches. Th is can greatly redu ce the perfor - mance of the cassette player.
26 THE FCC W ANTS Y OU TO KNOW In the unli kely event th at the TAD-716 causes problems on the phone line , the phone company can disconnect your service. The p hone company atte mpts to notif y you in advance. I f advance notice is not practical, th e phone company notifie s you of your right to file a compla int with the FCC.
27 Lightning damag e is not common. Nevertheless, if you live in an area that has frequent elect rical storms, we suggest that you u nplug the TAD-716 du ring storms to reduce the possibility of damage.
