7 PREP ARATION SELECTI NG A LOCATION You can place the phone on a des k t op or table, mount it on a standard wall plate, or mount it direct ly on t he wal l.
8 4. Insert the sup plied AC adapter ’s barrel plug into the DC 12V jack on the back of the base. 5. Route the ad apter ’s cord th rough the strain relief slot on t he back of the b a se .
9 2. Plug one en d o f the supp lied s hort modul ar cord into the telephone jack on t he bac k of the base. 3. Insert the supplied AC adapt er’s barrel plug into the DC 12V ja ck on the back of the base.
10 8. Plug the A C adapter i nto a s ta ndard AC outlet. The message counter counts down f r o m 18 to 00 and the T AD-1029 beeps. 9. Fully ext end th e base ’ s a ntenna and raise it to a vertical p osition.
11 4. Insert the supplied AC adapt er’s barrel plug into the DC 12V ja ck on the back of the base. 5. Route the m odular cord through ei - ther gro ove on the right bottom of the ba se and the ad apter co r d through the groove below the s trai n relief slot.
12 INSTALLING BACKUP BATTERIES The TAD-1029 requi res AC power to op- erate. However, if AC power fails or you unplug the TAD-1029, four AAA backup batteries (not supplied) save the mes- sages, day and time settings, and re- mote operation sec urit y code for up to 12 hours .
13 CONNECT ING AND CHA RGING THE HANDSET BAT TERY PACK The TAD-1029 comes with a recharge- able nickel-cadm ium battery p ack in the hands et but not connected. Before using your ph one, you mu st connect the bat - tery pack and then charge it for about 15 hours.

15 T URNING THE RINGERS OFF OR ON To tu r n o ff the ringers on the base and hands et, set RI NG E R on t he ri ght s ide of the base to OFF . You can s till m ak e or receive cal ls using this phone , and tele- phones on the s ame line still ring when there is an incoming call.
16 3. T o chan ge the day , repe atedly press SKIP (6) to m ove forward o r REPEA T (4) to m ove backward. 4. Press CLOCK . The T A D announces the ho ur and “A M” or “PM.” 5. T o cha nge the ho ur , r e peatedly press SKIP or REPEA T . 6. Press CLOCK .
17 T E LEP HONE OPERATI ON MAKING AND RECEIVING A CALL To make a call, lift the handset and press TA L K . When you hear the dial tone, dial the desired p hone number or m emory numbe r (see “Mem ory Dialing” on Page 19). To answ er a call if the handset is on the base , simply lift the ha ndset and begin your convers ation.
18 USING REDIAL You can quickly redi al the last num ber di- aled. Simply l ift the ha ndset and press TA L K . When yo u h ear the dial tone, press REDIAL. Notes: • The T A D’ s redial memory stores up to 32 digit s, so you can redial long- distance as well as local numbers.
19 USIN G PAGE/ INTERC OM You can use t he TAD-1029 a s a pag er and a two-way intercom between the base a nd the handset. T his is useful if you wa nt to find the handset, or if you want to h ave a c onversation between someone with the handset and som e- one at the base.
20 Notes: • Each tone or pause en try uses one digit of memory . • I f you wait more than 20 seconds to press a key or en ter more than 16 digits, the phon e sounds t hree quick beeps.
21 USIN G AN OPTIONAL HEADSET You can ma ke or answer c alls with hands -free convenience us ing an o p- tiona l headset that has a 3 / 32 -inch (2.5 mm ) plug. You r local RadioShack sto r e carries a variety of head sets. To connec t the headset, insert the hea d- set’s plug into t h e j a ck on the top of the handset .
22 T AD OPERATION SETTI NG TH E T AD TO ANSWER CALLS The TAD-1029 is ready to ans wer and record calls wi th the prerecorded outgo- ing message as s oon as y ou conne ct it to AC power. To rec ord your own outgo- ing message, see “Recording an Outgo- ing Message.
23 Using the Handset 1. Press REMOTE . The RE MOT E indi- cator l ights and –– appears on the base . 2. Press CHANGE () then A NNC (0 ) . The handset beeps o nce. 3. Speak y our mes sage in a no r mal voice, as though you were talking to someone on the p hone.
24 USING THE ANNOUNCE- ON LY FE A T U RE Your TAD-1029 i s p r e s e t to play an ou t- going m essage a nd record a caller’s message. However, you can also set it to play an outgoin g message b ut not let callers leave a message. To turn on the annou nce-only feature, hold down both M- BOX 1 and M- BO X 2 for about 2 s econds.
25 RECORDING INCOMING MESSAGES After the TAD answers a call, i t plays th e outgoi ng message, b eeps, and then the caller can s elect a mailbox by entering # then 1, or # then 2. If t he cal ler doe s not select a mailbox, the TAD records the mess age in the message c enter.
26 PLAYIN G MESSAG ES After a new m e s sag e i s recorded, the TAD’s message counter windo w shows the total number of mess ages stored, and the REMOT E indicator on the hand- set flashes. The message counte r di s- play flash es if there are new m essages in the message c enter.
27 DELETING MESS A GES To delete th e current message during playbac k, press DELETE on t he base or hands et. Note: You can replay a deleted m es- sage by repe atedly pres sing REPEA T on the base or ha ndset before the TAD a n- nounc es “End of m essages.
28 REMOTE OPERATIO N While you are away from your home or office, you can us e a touch-tone phone or a pulse (rot ary) phone with a pocket tone d ialer to en ter your rem ote opera- tion security code.

30 T ROUBLES HOOTING We do not e xpect you to have any problem s with your TAD-1029, but if you do, the following sugg estions m ight help. If you still have problem s, disconnec t the p hone. If o ther phones on the sam e line work properly, the fault is in this phone or its inst a llation.

32 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you f ollow the instructions in “ Conn ect- ing and Charging the Han dset Battery Pack” on P age 13, the battery pack should last about one y ear. If the battery pack does n ot hold a charge for more than 2 hours after an overnight charge, replace it with a 3.
