2 INTRODU CTION Radio Shack w elcomes you to the next gen er- atio n of perso nal comm unication — the Fa m- ily Radio Service (FRS). FRS is a new licens e-free, two-way , short-range v oice ra- dio s erv ic e th at le ts f amil i es a nd gro ups keep in touch with each o ther on spe cific res erved channe ls.
3 PREPARATION Note: Your radio’s display is prot ected durin g shipme nt by a piece of film. Peel off thi s film befo re you use t he ra di o. IN STALL ING BAT TERI ES Your radio requires three AAA b atteries (not suppli ed) for power.
4 1. Rotate OFF toward OFF u ntil it clicks to turn o f f the radio, the n pull dow n the lat ch on th e bottom of the radio to re- move th e battery compartment cove r . 2. Use a pointed ob ject such as a pen to set AL/NI insi de the compa rtmen t to AL (for al kaline batt eries) or NI (for re- chargea ble batteri es).

8 OPERATION CONTROLS OFF — turn away from OFF t o turn the radio on and adjus t the volum e. To turn th e radio o ff, turn OFF towa rd OFF until it clicks . PTT (push to talk) — to talk, ho ld down for about 1 s econd, th en speak in to the mic ro- phone.
9 Hold down MODE un til L disappears to u n- lock and . and — s elects the c hannel nu mber. DISPLAY AND INDICATOR S 1 – 19 — indica tes the selected channe l (1– 14) or quie t code (1–19 ). TX/BATT — l ights w hen you tra nsmit a mes- sage, pres s CAL L , or wh en the batteries are low.

11 AUTO-SQUELCH Your radio has auto -squelch , which m eans you wil l not hear anyt hing on a chan nel un- less som eone is transmi tting nearby on the same c hannel. Or, i f you use the quiet fe a- ture, you m ight not hear a trans mission on the curre nt frequenc y.
