Place the treadmill on a level surface, with at least eight feet of clearance behind it and two feet on each side.
4 23. DANGER: Always unplug the power cord immediately after use, before cleaning the t readmill, and before performing the mainte- nance and adjustment procedures described in this manual. Never remove the motor hood un- less instructed to do so by an authorized ser- vice representative.

The C500 treadmill offers an impres- sive array of features designed to make your workouts at home more enjoyable and effective. And w hen you’re not exercising, the unique C500 tread mill can be folded up, requiring less than half the floor space of other treadmills.
6 1. Make sure that the power cord is unplugged. With the help of a second person, carefully tip the treadmill onto its left side as shown. Partially fold the Frame (59) so the treadmill will be more stable. Do not fully fold the treadmill until it is completely assem- bled.
7 3. Have a second person hold the Pulse Bar Top (71) be- tween the Uprights (95, 92). See inset drawing 3a. Locate the ground wire on the right end of the Pulse Bar Top. Insert the ground wire through the indicated slot in the post on the Right Upright.
8 6. See drawing 6c. With the help of a second person, hold the Console Base (101) near the Uprights (92, 95). Look under the Console Base and locate the wires on the sides of the Console Base. Make sure that the wires are not routed through the openings for the Trays (67, 39).
9 10. Make sure that all parts are properly tightened before you use the treadmill. Note: Extra hardware may be included. Keep the included allen wrenches in a secure place; the large allen wrench is used to adjust the walking belt (see page 22). To protect the floor or carpet, place a mat under the treadmill.
10 If you purchase the optional chest pulse sensor (see page 18), follow the steps below to install the receiver i nclud ed with the chest pulse sensor. 1 . M ake sure that the power cord is unplugged. R emove the indicated Screw (78) and the Access Door (96).
1 1 OPERA TION AND ADJUSTMENT T HE PRE-LUBRICATED WALKING BELT Your treadmill features a walking belt coated with high- performance lubricant. IMPORTANT: Never apply sil- i cone spray or other substances to the walking b elt or the walking platform. Such substances will deteriorate the walking belt and cause excessive wear.
12 FEATURES OF THE CONSOLE The treadmill console offers an impressive array of features designed to help you get the most from your workouts. When the manual mode of the console is selected, the speed and incline of the treadmill can be changed with the t ouch of a button.
13 H OW TO TURN ON THE POWER Note: To prevent damage to the walking platform, always wear clean shoes when using the treadmill. P lug in the power cord (see page 11). Next, lo- cate the reset/off circuit breaker near the power cord. Make sure that the circuit breaker is in the reset position.
14 The left side of the dis- play will show the incline l evel of the treadmill, the elapsed time, and the d istance you have walked or run. Note: When a program is selected, the left side of the display will show the time remaining in the pro- gram instead of the elapsed time.
15 H OW TO USE A PRESET PROGRAM I nsert the key into the console. S ee HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER on page 13. Select one of the six preset programs. To select one of the six preset programs, press the Speed & Incline Programs button re- peatedly.
16 Follow your progress with the display. See step 5 on page 13. Measure your heart rate if desired. S ee step 6 on page 14. Turn on the fan if desired. See step 7 on page 14. When you are finished exercising, remove the key from the console. See step 8 on page 14.
17 P ress the Start button or the Speed increase button to start the progr am. A moment after the button is pressed, the tread- m ill will automatically adjust to the first speed and incline settings of the program. Hold the handrails and begin walking.
18 THE INFORMATION MODE/DEMO MODE T he console features an information mode that keeps track of the total number of hours that the treadmill has b een operated and the total number of miles that the walking belt has moved.
19 HOW T O FOLD AND MOVE THE TREADMILL HOW TO FOLD THE TREADMILL FOR STORAGE Before folding the treadmill, adjust the incline to the lowest position. If this is not done, the treadmill may be per- m anently damaged. Next, unplug the power cord. CAUTION: You must be able to safely lift 45 pounds (20 kg) to raise, lower, or move the treadmill.
20 HOW TO LOWER THE TREADMILL FOR USE 1. Hold the upper end of the treadmill with your right hand. Pull the latch knob to the left and hold it. Pivot the frame down until it is past the latch pin. 2. Hold the frame firmly with both hands, and lower it to the floor.
21 TROUBLESHOOTING Most treadmill problems can be solved by following the steps below. Find the symptom that applies, and follow the steps listed. If further assistance is needed, please call the toll-free telephone number on the f ront cover of this manual.
22 With the help of a second person, carefully raise the Uprights (92, 95) as shown. Caref ully pi vot th e Hood ( 1) off. L ocate the Reed Switch (22) and the Magnet (19) on the left side of the Pulley (18). Turn the Pulley until the Magnet is aligned with the Reed Switch.
23 CONDITIONING GUIDELINES The following guidelines will help you to plan your ex- ercise program. For more detailed exercise informa- tion, obtain a reputable book or consult your physician.
24 SUGGESTED STRETCHES T he correct form for several basic stretches is shown at the right. Move slowly as you stretch—never bounce. 1 . Toe Touch Stretch Stand with your knees bent slightly and slowly bend forward from your hips. Allow your back and shoulders to relax as you reach down toward your toes as far as possible.
