41 Chapter 5 Operation Introduction Once the PI- SCX camera has been in stalled, cam era operation is bas ically straightforward. I n most applicat ions you sim ply establish optim um perform ance usi.
42 PI - SCX System Manual Version 2.E 42 In A cquire mode, every fram e of data collected can b e automatical ly stored (the completed datase t may incl ude multiple fram es with one or m ore accumulations ). This mode would ordinarily be selected during actual data col lection.
Chapter 5 Operation 43 43 First Light The following paragraphs prov ide st ep -by- step instructions for verifying the opera tion of your PI-SC X system. The intent of th is simple proced ure is to he lp you gain basic familiarity w ith the operation of y our system and to show that it is function ing properly.
44 PI - SCX System Manual Version 2.E 44 Controller/Camera tab (Setup|Hard ware): Contr oller and Cam era parameters should be set autom at ically to the pr oper values fo r your system. H owever, you can click on the Load Defaults From Controller button on this tab to load the default settings.
Chapter 5 Operation 45 45 E x pe rim ent S e tu p T imi n g tab (A cq ui sit ion |Ex per im en t S e t up …) : Timing Mode: F ree Run Shutter Contro l: Normal Safe Mode vs . Fast Mode : Fast Mode General tab (Displ ay|Layout…): Se lect Horizont al and Vertical Cross Sections.
46 PI - SCX System Manual Version 2.E 46 Power Down Procedure It is recomm ende d that the cam era warm-up be careful ly controlled. Prope r warm-up will be achieved by proc eeding as foll ows: 1. While running WinView, gradua lly bring the cam era tem perature up in 10°C steps from its curren t lock tem perature to ambient tem perature.
Chapter 5 Operation 47 47 Exposure Time Exposure tim e (set on the Experime nt Setup|Main tab) is the tim e between S tart Acquisition and S top Acquisition commands sen t by the application software to the camera.
48 PI - SCX System Manual Version 2.E 48 as st abl e c on tr o l is re- es ta bli sh ed . Thi s is n or m al b eh av io r an d sh ou ld n o t be a c a us e f o r co nc er n. Onc e te m pe rat ure lo ck i s e sta b l is h e d, th e te m p er at u r e is the rm os tat e d t o w ith i n ±0 .
Chapter 5 Operation 49 49 Saturation When signal lev els in som e part of the im age are very hig h, charge generat ed in one pixel may exceed the "well capacity" o f the pixel, sp illing over into adjacent pixe ls in a process called "bloom ing.
50 PI - SCX System Manual Version 2.E 50 The upper left drawing in Figure 19 represents a CCD after exposure but before the beg inning of readout. The capital letters repr esent diff erent amounts of charge, including both signal and dark charge. This secti on explains readou t at full reso lution, where every pixel is digitized separately.
Chapter 5 Operation 51 51 as image pixe ls, the binning of large sections m ay result in saturation and “bl oom ing”, or spilling of charg e back into the image area. Figure 20 shows an example of 2 2 bi nning. Each pix el of the im age displayed by the software represen ts 4 pixels of th e CCD array.
52 PI - SCX System Manual Version 2.E 52 This technique i s also usefu l in high lig ht level experiments, wh ere the cam era is again photon shot- noise limited. Sum ming multiple pixels in software correspond s to collect ing more photons, and results in a be tter S/N ratio in the measu rement.
Chapter 5 Operation 53 53 Example: The foll owing descr iptions assum e that the actual incoming lig ht level is identical in al l three instanc es. The numbers used il lustrate the effe ct of changin.
54 PI - SCX System Manual Version 2.E 54 ADC Offset ADC offset (al so known as base line offset) provid es another way of dealing with d ark charge (see "Dark Charg e" , page 48). By offsetting the baseline signal, m uch of the background is ig nored during conversion.
55 Chapter 6 Advanced Topics Introduction Previous chapter s have discussed sett ing up the hardware and the so ftware f or basic operation. This chapter discus ses topics as sociated with experiment synchro nization (se t up on the Experime nt Setup |Timing tab in WinV iew and WinSpec).
56 PI - SCX System Manual Version 2.E 56 Cleans m odes, opens the shutter a s soon as the S T-133 is ready to receiv e an Exter nal Sync pulse. This is required if the time between the External Sy nc pulse and the ev ent is less than a few m illiseconds, the t ime it takes th e shutter to open.
Chapter 6 Advanced Topics 57 57 programm ed exposure period. As soon as the exposure is complete, the shu tter closes and the CCD array is read out. Because the ex ternal shutte r requires a finite am.
58 PI - SCX System Manual Version 2.E 58 Note: If EX T SYNC is still active ( in Figure 25, this m eans t hat if it is still LO W) at the end of the readou t, the hardw are may interpret th is as a second sy nc pulse, and so on.
Chapter 6 Advanced Topics 59 59 completed, to prev ent the CCD from getting "ou t of step." As expec ted, the respon se latency is on the or der of one v ertical shift tim e, fro m 1- 30 µs depending on the array.
60 PI - SCX System Manual Version 2.E 60 One disadvantage o f the Safe Mode is that events m ay be missed during the experi ment, since the ST - 133 is d isabled for a short time after e ach frame.
Chapter 6 Advanced Topics 61 61 TTL Control Fully supported by WinView/WinS pec Version 2.5 wh en the commun ication protocol is TAXI (PCI), this fea ture is not suppor ted when the p rotocol is USB 2.
62 PI - SCX System Manual Version 2.E 62 Table 4 illustra tes this coding for decimal v alues 0 throug h 7. Obviously this t able could easily be extend ed to show the coding for values a ll the way to 255.
