2 - 1 2 Over view This chapter provides an overview of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) application and how the phones fit into the network configuration. SIP is the Internet Engineerin g Task Force (IETF) standard for multimedia conferencing over IP.

Setting up Y our Sy stem 3 - 5 For downloading the bootROM and application images to the phone, the secure HTTPS protocol is not available. To guarantee software integrity, the bootROM will only download crypto graphically signed b ootROM or application images.

Setting up Y our Sy stem 3 - 11 Ethernet Menu The following Ethernet configuration parameters can be modified on the Ethernet menu: Syslog Menu Syslog is a standard for forwarding log messages in an IP network. The term “syslog” is often used for both the ac tual syslog protocol, as well as the application or library se nding syslog messages.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 3 - 12 The syslog protocol is a very simplistic protocol: the syslog sender sends a small textual message (less than 1024 byte s) to the syslog receiver. The receiver is commonly called “syslogd”, “sys log daemon” or “syslog server”.

The para meters des cribed in sec tion Server Menu on page 3-9 can be used to configure the number of times each server will be trie d for a file transfer and also how long to wait between each attempt.

Setting up Y our Sy stem 3 - 15 Multiple boot servers can be configured by having the boot server DNS name map to multiple IP addresses. The def a ult number of boot servers is one and the maximum number is eight. HTTP S, HTTP, and FTP are supported for redundant boot servers.

Setting up Y our Sy stem 3 - 19 Upgrading SIP Application You can upgrade the SIP application that is running on the SoundPoin t IP and SoundStation IP phones in your orga nization. The exact steps that you perform are dependent on the version of the SIP application that is currently running on the phones and the version that want to upgrade to.

Configuring Y our System 4 - 3 Call Log The phone maintains a call log. The lo g contains call information such as remote party ide ntification, t ime and date , and call duration. It can be used to redial previous outgoing calls, return incoming calls, an d save contact information from call log entries to the contact directory.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 4 - 4 Called Par ty Identification The phone displays and logs the identity of the remote party specified for outgoing calls. This is the party th at the user intends to connect with. There are no related configuration changes.

Configuring Y our System 4 - 7 Distinctive Ringing There are three options for distinctive ringing: 1. The user can select the ring type for each line. This option has the lowest priority. 2. The ring type for specific callers can be assigned in the contact directory.
Administrator’ s Guide SoundPoint IP / SoundStation IP 4 - 8 Do Not Disturb A Do Not Disturb (DND) feature is availa ble to temporarily stop all incoming call alerting. Calls can opti onally be treated as though the phone is busy while DND is enabled.
Configuring Y our System 4 - 9 IP 4000, 6000, and 7000 c onference phones are full-duplex speakerphones. The SoundPoint IP 301 phones is a listen -only speakerphone. The SoundPoint IP phones provide dedicated keys for c onvenient selection of either the speakerphone or headset.

Time and date can be displayed in certain operating mode s such as when the phone is idle and during a call.
Configuring Y our System 4 - 15 Idle Display Animation All phones except the SoundPoint IP 301 can display a customized animation on the idle display in addition to the time and date. For example, a company logo could be dis played (refer to Addi ng a Background Logo on page C-6 ).

Configuring Y our System 4 - 19 Configuration changes can performe d centrally at the boot server: Local / Centralized Conferencing The phone can conference together the local user with the remote parties of a configurable number of independent ca lls by using the phone’s local audio processing resources for the audio bridging.

New parties can be added and information about the conference participants can be viewed (for example, names, phone numbers, send/receive status or media flow, receive and transmit codecs, and hold status).

For example, when a phone has been set to enable call forwarding, the Diversion header allows the rece iving phone to indicate who the call was from, and from which phone number it was forwarded.
